  1. Looks like DJI, http://www.4kshooters.net/2018/04/05/dji-zenmuse-x7-is-one-of-the-first-cameras-to-support-apple-prores-raw/ and Atomos are already enabling it: http://www.4kshooters.net/2018/04/05/atomos-shogun-inferno-and-sumo19-first-to-support-new-prores-raw-format/
  2. Looks like Apple is spending a lot of time to creat a great pro system for the real pros. A whole new Mac Pro is coming in 2019 https://techcrunch.com/2018/04/05/apples-2019-imac-pro-will-be-shaped-by-workflows/
  3. THANKS!!!! Your reply should be pinned someplace for all the newbies like myself.
  4. I'm not sure that conclusion is correct. A - Apple could maintain their pro lines for professional. B - Apple might even advance further that intel on CPU performance. Just looking at their progress on mobile chip, they basically beat everyone else. C - By "Professional Market" you probably mean anything that needs a GPU acceleration. They might still use any of the GPU makers that optimizes image/video processing while use their on CPU for most optimize way of managing the device.
  5. @ajay thanks for the reply! Yes, I did see that in his reply. It's a great "aha" moment. Which created additional questions for me. So I would love to see what he does on the field. For example, I do a lot of panorama photos (4 of my large prints are hanging at SmugMug's offices) But I've been doing it for a long time and I have learned a lot from my mistakes. By now, I'm usually on auto-pilot mode. I find the brightest spot in my pano. I expose for that, I check for the color RGB histogram to make sure I'm not clipping reds (daylight) or blues (at near blue hour). I shoot mostly with 50, 85 or 180. For 180 it's often something far, and I shoot at f/5.6. It's a manual lens, so I focus at f/2.8 and then click down to f/5.6. If it's low light and light is changing fast I even stay at 2.8. For 50 sometimes f/8 with a close foreground and very close I shoot f/11 if I have to. I guess, I'm looking to see what his habits are now. What he defaults to, etc.
  6. @Don Kotlos - very interesting. As someone like myself that is looking into buying a A7iii or A7Riii I'm curious about what your learned and what is now your base settings. Would really appreciate to learn from what you've learned. Thanks!

    DJI leaks

bummer! Boy, I'm glad I didn't sell my Mavic yet. Was almost going to do a fire sale on it...but I'll keep it for now and maybe just get than Phantom 5 with the interchange lens.

  9. the new A7III has a dual ISO pathway: https://***URL removed***/articles/3389926460/sony-a7-iii-dynamic-range-and-high-iso-improve-over-its-predecessor
  10. maybe...but it's hard to know if the story would have been better or not. It'll always be an unknown. But to your point, I like how the main character reacted to his disappointment. So that really becomes the story in some ways. And I think for that reason, it could have been more interesting if the main ceremony and the anticipation for it would have been more prominent just to make the disappointment stronger and the reaction to it even more fulfilling.
  11. this is awesome! Too bad the ceremony date changed and you guys didn't too shoot that. Can you talk about some of the challenges of shooting this. Matching colors between 3-4 different cameras and also what you did about sound recording and what you would do differently next time based on what you learned.
  12. So I got a 24-hour flash sale deal from Adorama for a smallHD 501 for $599. Is this a deal or just a marketing ploy? https://www.adorama.com/smmon501.html?emailprice=t&utm_source=slgt&utm_medium=email&utm_term=Snapshot&utm_content=Body&utm_campaign=Email_Snapshot_031318&
  13. I'm going to give it a try. But just curious how easy it is to make your shot list. Can you guys share some screenshots of what you have drafted so far?
  14. Thanks! You almost need subtitles for those of us not used to the kiwi accent I was hoping you would have gone into how you setup your rig with these stuff in your videos.
  15. In your blog you talked about timecode boxes, "they’ve become amazingly affordable lately" Which one do you recommend for those of us who have a mixpre 6? Thanks!
  16. Had a couple of days shooting with it last week in my office building - cool! How did you like it? Also did you see the one-day B&H's one-day deal ($399) for Sony UWP-D11 today?
  17. Intereresting interview between NewsShooter and PM of Alexa Mini. On the third anniversary of the its release. 1 - There is a new Alexa Mini in the works: Confirmed they are working on the next version of Alexa Mini (that should be no surprise). 2 - LF sensor: They like to use the LF sensor in the next Mini. It wont have all the frame rates options, etc. 3 - Technically challenging: Putting that larger sensor (larger image to process) into a smaller body is challenging. 4 - Unknown timing: They don't know when, because they don't when/if they can solve the technical issue of putting everything into the smaller body. 5 - Mini is doing really well: Also, they confirmed Alexa Mini did far better than they had anticipated. They were expecting high demand for it, but the demand has even exceeded their expectations.
  18. The IBIS look good, the colors look pretty good. They almost got everything right to have a tiny camera that you can steal shots with and quickly create something. But if you are going to be fighting with AF, then it's going be a headache. But for some people who are going to focus manually along with Fuji's very reasonable zoom cinema lenses, it makes a good compact package still. Not going to happen anytime soon. Canon is doing financially well and as a result there is no financial pressure on them to innovate outside of what they have been doing. Yes, canon mastered the AF technology with Dual Pixel technology. But they're not going to give you a camera in the $2-3k price point. I actually think there is more incentive on Nikon to create something great, but not sure they can muster the technology needed. So, it really comes down to Sony and they put a lot into their A7iii and I think it's a very reasonable price for a FF 4k camera. The question for me is still if their IBIS has improved at all or not for video stuff.
  19. Thanks! That's all I needed to know...I guess, Sony A7iii is a much better practical option.
  20. Thanks! I looked into BlackMagic Video Assist 4K. Had no idea they had a recorder too. 1 - What made you choose that over Atomos? 2 - It seems to me BlackMagic doesn't offer DCI recording, https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=54819 Fuji XH1 has a DCI resolution. So it would be shame to lose that. Do you have not need for DCI? I like the SD recording option of black magic, just hope they'll have an update to support DCI. It would make it a no-brainer given the recording options.
  21. Max Yuryev has done the first ISO comparison:
  22. I'm considering either Sony A7iii or a Fuji XH1. Both of them offer 4:2:0 internally and 4:2:2 externally FUJI XH1: https://***URL not allowed***/fujifilm-x-h1-review-and-sample-footage/ Sony A7III: https://***URL removed***/news/8128895545/sony-launches-a7-iii-sub-2000-24mp-full-frame-mirrorless-with-a7r-iii-s-advances I want something compact. I can shoot 4k with good AF and IBIS. So I can discreetly steal shots and work quickly. However, I'm wondering if I should get an external recorder so I can shoot 4:2:2. Maybe not for every shot. But where I can be less discreet and might need extra post processing. In another post there is a 10bit thread. One extreme: is the 10 bit 4:2:2 vs. 8 bit 4:2:2 vs. 8 bit 4:2:0 that shows a huge jump after simple curve to 4:2:0 vs 4:2:2 and then there is Dave Dugdales GH5 10bit vs. 8 bit 6500 that shows no practical difference. (http://www.4kshooters.net/2017/12/12/gh5-10-bit-vs-sony-a6500-8-bit-video-can-you-spot-the-differences/) I want to know if anyone has done any real test with the Fuji XH1 or the Sony A7Riii (since A7iii is not available yet, but I'm assuming the codec is probably similar). What I've found so far is with A6300 and A6500 https://***URL not allowed***/working-with-the-sony-a6300-and-atomos-shogun/ showing slight advantage if anything. Which is contradicting the article above with the sever banding differences. You can argue, a 7 inch monitor might make shooting easier helping better fame your shot etc, but it defeats the idea of having a discrete system. I most likely shoot with a gimbal (thought the Fuji's IBIS looks very good and might eliminate that need a bit) so a monitor and some wire may not be that big of difference only if the advantages are noticeable. I'm looking for actual hands-on experience or real video articles that I might have missed. Too many responses are filled with assumptions and hypothesis and they just add to much noise over real information. Thanks!
  23. I still love my D810. But looking closely at A7III and Fuji XH1 as I want to play more with video.
