  1. Philosophically I agree with you. I also think even if the phones are 1-2% distraction from their work, it could impact the end results. However, many equipments now are controlled by smart phones or iPads. From sound mixing to light control, etc. So it's going to be impossible to dictate that rule.
  2. Hope I'm posting this to the right place. I saw this on my FB thread and I thought someone here might be interested in it. I don't know this organization or how legit it is. But looks like it's an all expense paid trip (no pay) for exchange of a 10-15 min documentary outcome: https://www.shewentwild.com/blogposts/2018/4/16/filmmaker-required-for-mongolian-expedition
  3. I don't see it. Samsung is a consumer electronic company. I think they want to sell TVs, phones, etc. and the electronics in mass volumes. Having a camera company is more than just designing a few camera bodies. Samsung is a global brand, and this decision is not just about can we make money now. The question is, how much distraction is it vs. how much money can we make it. What is the opportunity cost? Will our brand take a hit if we can't deliver. How are we going to support the prosumer market. Who will service and fix these lenses. And as the market is becoming competitive, can we still make any money from this market? Will our product be that much better to make a differentiation. Samsung tried that, they had a better product and they still couldn't make it work. I just think, for Samsung is not worth it. The best you can hope for (as others have suggested it) is for samsung to make it a bit harder for Sony and start selling their sensors and give buyers more options and more bargaining power. I think they can make the inside of the cameras , but they probably will just remain inside some other brand (Nikon is being the most logical choice as pointed out with @Robert Collins ) So, I just don't think so.
  4. this is probably the best video-centric review I've seen so far. Thanks for sharing.
  5. This is a 8X10 sensor at 12 megapixels that shoots 4K video as well http://largesense.com/products/8x10-large-format-digital-back-ls911/
  6. Not at all...software distribution is basically free. So BM can claim if you include the cost of the software this is a sub $1000 cinema camera. It cost money to manufacture, QA, ship hardware. Even at $1300 for a low volume hardware company it's quiet amazing. So I don't see them selling the camera without the dangle dongle for $1000.
  7. I think Arri can not shrink and put all their dual gain architecture into smaller sensor units (remember Arri has the best highlight rolloff and they basically take the signal and run it through two different amplification gain and then combine it back together) without the wires and pixels cross talking. I also think, they are building something that is future proof so they can support 6K or 8K in the future. They already have a sensor architecture that is still superior on the market. So why mess with it. Just make it larger to meet the higher resolution. So, if you don't care to have the buttery smooth highlight rolloff or can control your lighting, you can probably do just fine with 4/3. The 4/3 is about 1/4 the area of the FF. On my nikon of 36 mp. My Sigma Art 50 and some of my zeiss, voigtlander and adapted leica lenses have amazing pixel resolution. So 8 megapixel on 4/3 should *roughly* demand the same amount from the sensor and the lens. Which is BTW, is the exact resolution of BM. The problem is the 4/3 hybrids that are 16 or 20 megapixels. So I think if you had 8 mp 4/3 sensor you could get the same DR as a Nikon D810, which is quiet amazing.
  8. Sorry should have not even mentioned that. It's confusing and self-defeating. Was recently reading through other threads, in particular the thread about the new black magic design pocket camera. That it went off track with people talking about why GH5 is great and how the other guy is insulting them, etc. Which to me it's mostly driven by fragile ego. So I was not talking about this thread or anything you said. In hindsight I could see why it must have either felt out of context or perhaps pointed to you. Anyways, sorry for the confusion and lets move on keep this thread on topic. thanks for contributing with your feedback and questions and inputs.
  9. @IronFilm and @Kisaha - Curious what you guys think of the new MixPre firmware that they'll be releasing this week:
  10. I'm trying to keep this thread informative (without all the typical ego-based ranting). So I also found these Chinese guys. Actually when I initially looked the price was $150. Now it's $200. But it's not bad. I was looking for just daylight to maximize my light output and also didn't want to travel with a larger power unit and color controller. I think t heir CRI rating of 95 is bogus since others who sell the same light list it as 90+ but still it's a great option for the price: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Travor-New-Arrival-FL-3060-Flexible-LED-Video-Light-448pcs-LEDs-CRI95-5500K-2-4G-Remote/32802896966.html?spm=a2g0s.13010208.99999999.262.ELBS3w
  11. Some more of my favorite lights that I've seen from different NAB reporting so far. My MOST FAVORITE so far is this guy : https://www.newsshooter.com/2018/04/12/66093/ I messaged them via their facebook page, and I'll order couple of their 6W lights for fun. This Westcott has a great/performance value at $499: https://www.newsshooter.com/2018/04/12/westcott-solix-oled/ This 1X3 DPLumi at $1200 or so is also seem like an interesting option. It's about 3X the chinese versions but quality seems pretty good. https://www.newsshooter.com/2018/04/12/dp-lumi-flexible-led-lights/ These guys are doing a smart RGB panel. Their driver as they claim keeping colors within the rec709 color range. I'm assuming it'll help in color grading and preventing banding. It reminds me of photoshop and doing web graphic in the old days when you had to worry a lot about web colors and GIFs. They also are saying their profiling various camera sensors to better emit lights that match their characteristics. https://nofilmschool.com/2018/12/litegear-litemats-litetile-nab These guys have taken essentially a SCUBA diving lights and are marketing it to the cinema crowd. I guess why not. Anything with "photo", "Cine" or "Broadcast" in front of it usually demands higher pricers. The owner/rep sounds like a snobbish prick so I'm not sure even if I had the money, I would buy their stuff. https://nofilmschool.com/2018/04/distance-isnt-problem-stellas-new-leds Lastly, I have to give it to another small guy. They got here so far via several fundraising campaign. And they build nice looking stuff: The CRI doesn't seem that good, so maybe their next version could be more interesting. https://nofilmschool.com/2018/12/blind-spot-lights-pack-powerful-punch-tiny-fixture Anyways, hope others find this compilation useful or interesting.
  12. @HockeyFan12 check out this video as well. He shows how to do a police car emulation. I have not used the lights that much, but will use it on an upcoming project. The app used to have a a few other options, like lightning. But it was removed. I messaged their help desk and they said it had issues and they were going to put the lighting effect back. But looks like they haven't and just updated the app to work with their new Cello light. This also looks like a great light package. With weather sealed and so much power in a small package. https://www.newsshooter.com/2018/04/11/practilite-802-from-kinotehnik-first-look/ I read the review of their Fresnel light. One person said the cost of shipping it back to (I'm guessing Estonia) made the warranty almost worthless. So it's something to think about, vs companies like Aputure that have a US service and stand by their products.
  13. BTW, B&H has a sweet discount today on their boom poles. I thought you might want to order a couple before you head back.

  14. For DIY crowd who want to create their own very high CRI LED panel, LED spot or flex lights. These guys sell CRI of 95-98 LEDs with everything you need to make your own LED lighting stuff. https://www.yujiintl.com You might ask yourself why do you need to make your own lights, when you can buy them cheaply. The reason is some lights with high CRI are still very expensive and you can build something yourself for 1/3 or 1/4 of the cost. But more importantly you can build something modular that you can customize to your needs. Look at Roger Deakins custom light setup for his movies, https://www.premiumbeat.com/blog/blade-runner-2049-lighting-cinematography/ or soft panel, If you read the Aputure article above, they also mentioned that RGB LEDs tend to generate more heat. Looks like it's the property of the RGB LEDs. Maybe they just need more research. I have not noticed over heating on my Viola but I have not tested them for a long period either.
  15. Looks like Aputure is also getting into the RGB game https://www.newsshooter.com/2018/04/10/aputure-shows-prototype-rgb-panel-light-color-picker-device/
  16. Please share a video on this...I'm curious to see how good it is. Did they say when it'll be shipping?
  17. sure...introduce this after I invest into MixPre
  18. Wanted to have a thread on lights. LEDs have changed the entire industry. I'm always looking for a great light solutions for cheap, high quality and versatile. Today at NAB, Luxli introduced a follow up their RGB Viola LEDS, called (wait for it) Cello. It's basically a 10 inch version of the 5 inch former (get it, cello). The CRI I'm guessing is better (couldn't find the CRI on the Viola, even though I own two of them but these have 95). https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/video/news/nab-2018-luxli-expands-led-orchestra-with-cello-rgbaw-light I bought the Viola just before Christmas 2017 when B&H had their daily deals on them. I think I paid like $170 (I bought 2, should have bought more). They're on sale again, for $199. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1237741-REG/luxli_orc_viola_5_viola_5_multi_color_on_camera.html I bought them mostly for accent and background color. I tried to shoot a cover video for a singer and we tried to have different color backgrounds for different songs and (since I was traveling) finding gels was a bit hard. So I ended up buying color pens and coloring frosty material to make my own gel. It was a headache. Not to mention my DIY, gels cut so much of the light power. These Luxli lights produce infinite color variations and are very bright for their size. So I love them. For comparison: Viola: CRI: ? Power draw: 16.28 W Beam: 60° Light 3000K-10000K + RGB LUX at 3 feet 3200k = 818; 4300k= 838; 5600k = 836; 6500k = 840; 7200k =848; 10,000k == 844 Cello: CRI: 95; TLCI 97 LUX at 3 feet 1200 (colors are not provided yet) Power Draw: 24W Beam: 72° But I'm always looking for high quality lights and I'm curious what else it's being announced at NAB and afterwards. So if you see anything cool at NAB or on sale, etc. please share! Here's some of the things you can do with the Viola lights:
  19. When the initial images of the billboard or the sneaked media images leaked out. I had zero interest in this camera. However, now seeing the full specs, it looks to a very capable tool. I guess you don't really need autofocus with such a big screen (unless you need a gimbal) and the lack of IBIS makes it less attractive. But at this price point it's quiet amazing. I was considering getting the Resolve Studio, so for $1000 you're getting pretty amazing image capturing tool. Sadly, now the only limitation in creating great stories is talent, which is not that cheap to acquire
  20. In the Cinema5D video interview I heard full down sample to HD and they mentioned because of that no antialiasing, etc.

    NAB 2018

Funny enough I tried to see if the T values did match or not, but couldn't tell from the photo. You must have much better eyes than I do...

Where/when can I send my money?
  24. There is nothing pocket about this. It's almost the size of the GH5. It seems to me BMD is trying to go after the same market the GH5 has and use that as a gateway into their ecosystem. I guess in someways they have to do that if they want to maintain a camera business. Otherwise with Sony, soon Canon, Panasonic all of them offering an entry-level 4K system that can work as a gateway-drug into brand's platform, Blackmagic will get squeezed out eventually, if they're unable to bring in new users. That said, I think this product might be a mistake. I'm saying that purely on form factor. There would have been something charming about the same small form factor as the older model but with high quality cinematic abilities in 4K. Before you talk about heat issues, etc. I would just say look at DJI phantom 4 pro. Somehow they managed to put a 1" sensor with gimbal and everything in a small package. So I'm sure if you wanted to design a camera around heat dissipation and keep it small, you could do that.
