  1. Thanks! Actually my first link had the same model, https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1261643-REG/ikan_dh5e_5_signal_support.html So looks like we're talking about the same thing. So I'm getting two different feedback. Some people are telling me, it's better to go 7" and some are telling me for mobility better to go 5". If I had the time I would try each of them by renting or something, I guess.
  2. @Kisaha thanks. I'm guess this is the ikan you're recommending? ikan 5" I also found this article on Tom Antos blog: MOST AFFORDABLE BRIGHT ON-CAMERA MONITOR WITH PRO FEATURES This is the video from the above article:
  3. Hi!

Will you consider selling the Ninja Blade alone?
"Atomos Ninja Blade with 128GB SSD for $250"

Also is this the "full version"?

I'm consider just using my D810 for now but get an external recorder and monitor for focus peaking and maybe ProRes higher bitrate recording.

    Thank you!

It looks like it would cost $17.50 to send it to you.  I was thinking you could just borrow it, but I don't think it worth the near $40.  I'm also hesitant because I believe you'll just come to the same conclusion I came to.  Once you start rigging out a DSLR you increase all your points of failure, problems, etc.  The day you put your hands on a C100 or similar camera will be the day you want to get away from DSLRs rigs.  Of course, many people rig up cinema cameras.  However, they still work the best for a single shooter, which it sounds like you are.

I actually bought the Atomos first for my Sony A6300, etc.  It was useful for that LOG analysis stuff I did (a disheartening thread somewhere here on EOSHD--I discovered LOG is a weird religion to a lot of people).  Anyway, for actual shooting it was just a pain in the ass.  I knew the guy I bought it from had a C100.  He sold it because he said he stopped using it because the SD cards were fine.  Then a few months later I saw an ad for the C100 and it was the same guy!  He was getting out of wedding videos altogether to focus on his job.

If video is still experimental for you, the Atomos might be nice for you to have, for all the reasons you mention.  If you're going to do video in any real way, get a C100 or FS5 (F3, etc).

I love Sony cameras for my needs, I have an A6000, A6300, A7 and 7R.  But if someone begged me to do some wedding or an event where I'd have to get shit done, I'd get a D810 or D850.  If you shoot professionally you know how precious even half a second is.  How just having to worry about one more battery (in the Atomos say) can distract you into screwing up.

Sorry for blathering on.  Anyway, if you really want the Atomos you could borrow, eventually buy it I guess.

Not "blathering" at all! This is very informative and I am so appreciative you're taking time to reply me with your personal experience.

My goal is to make a short film as a stepping stone of making a full featured film. This is mostly a personal life-long ambition. I'm going to make money from it and I don't think I will.
I did some professional wedding stuff in the past, but I realized I rather keep photography as a passion and keep my day job for making money. Mostly because professional photography is more about being a great sales person than being a great photographer.
Anyways. I did one simple fun music video with a talent in Belarus (she attended GITI in Moscow which is equivalent for our Juliards).  I also shot 4 cover/music video with a singer talent. I shot most of them with A6000 and the sigma 19/2.8 and some with the contax/zeiss 28/2.8 on the gimbal. One of the cover music video I shot with the D810 and sigma art 50/1.4 which put the gimbal to its limit and I basically ended up using it as a tripod.  That being said, I really loved the colors out of D810 with the sigma 1.4. However, I after I focused on the talent, I had no idea if I was keeping focus or not. In contrast using the A6000 even with the contax 28/2.8 the focus peaking was very helpful. It allowed me to move and yet keep my focus on the eyes.

So I'm returning back to Belarus and I'm planning to shoot a short 3-5 min film with the acting talent. I have most of the scenes in my head and I'm just writing it down as a script.  I was thinking of getting an A6500. Mostly for it's AF capabilities and also for it's IBIS. I would want to even avoid the gimbal if I could. At least for some shots, especially in the metro where the Belarusian police might start harassing me.  I initially figured I shoot in 4k and downsize to 1080 and I thought A6500 might work really well for me. It's discrete, does well in low light and it has some level of IBIS.

But I'm seeing new cameras coming out including a pozsslibe A7SIII and decided maybe I should just stay with the A6000 I have and combine it with my D810 to shoot the short film. This is what made me look into monitors that would give me access to focus peaking. So I can use my D810 and be able to know if I'm in focus or not as I move the camera around.

I'm giving the long winded story, just to give you context and also solicit some feedback and advice on how I should approach it.

      Thanks again,

      Salim

  4. Hi all - I shot one cover music video with my D810 and Sigma 50/1.4 art. I was very impressed with the colors. I thought it was just me, but then I read other reviews (including some comments on this site) and it looks I'm not alone. However, I had a hard time with the focusing. Especially shooting at 1.4 So I want to know what you recommend for an external monitor. I'm hoping a larger/sharper monitor or focus peaking might make keeping focus during the capturing much easier and reliable. I'm looking at Atomos Blade 5". I like the size...I can attach it to my gimbal handle. And shoot with the gimbal and ensure I'm keeping my focus distance. So here are my thoughts/questions: Do I need the external recording? Does the 422 ProRes vs 420 make a big difference? I like the compactness of 5" because I think it'll be easier to manage connecting it to my gimbal handle or on the hotshoe. But should I be thinking 7"? Should I just get an external monitor, that might be lighter and cheaper and use it for false color and focus peaking? Should I spend more and get a future proof recorder that does 4K? I might get a A7S or A7SII in the future? For the future-proof 4k recording are there other options than the Atomos? Thanks in advance!
  5. @IronFilm So I think I'll go with the Sony per your recommendations. The link above had a helpful comment: so based on that, I figured it's safest to get the "UHF Channels 14/25: 470 to 542 MHz" variety of the Sony UWP-D11. I'd like to record a dialogue with two people. And I notice Sony also makes a dual receiver: Sony URX-P03D they also sell a packet with two transmitter and one dual channel receiver: but its more expensive than just buying two separate UWP-D11 system. Which is a bet strange. It's almost 50% more expensive. I also saw a review of Saramonic UWMIC9 I saw couple of reviews. I like the one receiver option and the price. But I guess there is always a tradeoff. I've been watching a few auctions on Sony's on eBay. But not too many user options.
  6. I did try that with US...but the service I was using did not have data outside of US. What should I use for outside of US?
  7. If the autofocus is like A6500 or better...I'll get one!
  8. @IronFilm and @Kisaha Thanks for your wonderful input. Yes, @IronFilm a nice blog or a simple Youtube instructional vide would be awesome. I looked at the Rode and the 2.4G digital transmission appeals to my needs. I'll be traveling and I just don't know the frequency range that I can use or able to use. That said, while looking at them on B&H I also noticed the, https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1135455-REG/sennheiser_avx_me2_set_4_us_avx_camera_mountable_lavalier_wireless.html Really like the form factor that I can connect the receiver into the XLR input of like a Sound Devices, etc. Any of you have any experience with this one? Aside from price different with Rode are there other differences?
  9. So what's your best bang for the buck wireless suggestion?
  10. THANKS! the two XLRs of C100 is one of the reasons I'm interested in it. But I'm shooting this short film in Belarus. So probably thinking of something more discrete than the C100. So at the same time, I'm thinking about a A6300, A6500 shooting on a gimbal maybe. That's why I asked. I also have a used Sound Devices 302 that I connect to Tascam DR-40 recorder. It's going to be almost a no crew shooting (no sounds person, etc). So I'd like to keep it simple and easy. I'm worried about wireless. especially traveling to a different country. Just don't know if they have different bandwidth licensing setup and I'll pick up a lot of noise, or worse not allowed to use the devices.
  11. I saw that deal as well as I've been looking to pick up a lav system. I need something to allow me to record a dialogue and have lav on two different person. I rather not deal with two different media sources. Just one file that has two tracks. Any suggestions?
  12. How do you like 1080 out of A6300? Is it better than A6000? How about AF? I'm also considering A6300 or A6500. I want to shoot this short film. Initially was thinking of doing in 4K, but I'm not sure if I'm ready for it or not. Seems like file management, etc. could be too much to deal with for a first real project.
  13. There is also 25% discount at BorrowLenses used stuff. What are the thoughts on the original Sony A7s vs the C100. https://www.borrowlenses.com/product/gear-for-sale/Sony-Alpha-a7S-Mirrorless-Digital-Camera I want to shoot on a gimbal and A7s might be working better, perhaps.
  14. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/find/dealZone.jsp this is a 24 hour deal. Question is. Is this a good deal? Is it worth it to pay the extra $500 to get dual pixel auto focus on top of it? What are your thoughts?
  15. Dec 15 is a Friday. It's such a curious time to announce anything. Some thoughts: 1 - This was a last minute decision to announce this before end of the year. And logistically Friday, Dec 15 was the only time available to their Marketing team. 2 - This is a non-consumer product so announcing it on Friday, while people are occupied with other things, etc. is not an issue for them. 3 - The timing is designed to steal thunder of another competing product (to be announced) or perhaps against an existing product in the market and the goal is to make some buyers put a pause on their purchasing decision before end of the year.
  16. I saw that...and was about to buy it. But looked at the reviews and decided, I rather spend $200-300 more and buy a GX85 or something. The reviews were not only bad, but made the camera seem not that useful at all. Then I went to the manufacturers website and it looks like they have completely shifted their focus doing VR cameras. Which means there will be no additional firmware improvements and I'll be left with a $200 junk. I rather spend $500 and have something like the GX85, I think.
  17. This looks very interesting. I'm curious about workflow and the types codec, etc. it supports. Do you stabilize your footage first? What's the output quality? The sample videos seem to work best with wide angle and ultra wide angle lenses. There were one or two longer lens samples as well. I like to watch 3-4 minute of stabilized footage to see if there is any invisible effects that could still gives me or the viewers nausea or headache.
  18. 5 axis stabilization to 5.5 stops pixel-shift using IBIS to generate a 169 megapixel image. Sony china is saying it's equivalent to 99 megapixel in real resolution. some samples: overview features:
  19. https://www.eoshd.com/2017/10/sony-a7r-iii-announced-4k-hdr-ergonomic-improvements-no-10bit-4k60p/ "What’s new in the A7R III for video shooters? Well the improved ergonomics introduced with the A9 are on this body along with a new higher resolution 3.3m dot EVF. The camera now shoots 4K in Hybrid Log Gamma for compatibility with the latest 4K HDR TVs, like the Panasonic GH5. Unlike the GH5 however, it is held back by the 8bit 4:2:0 codec. HDR and HLG require a very wide colour gamut, so we’ll have to examine very carefully in the review whether this camera is really capable of a nice 4K HDR image without banding and colour problems."
  20. If I decide to go Sony A7 (or whatever sony might announce in a week or two) Then I probably go with Zeiss Batis 25/2. However, Lloyd Chambers who is a bit of Zeiss expert seem to already praising the performance of this lens from his early impressions calling it the best 24/25 lens he has worked with, https://diglloyd.com/blog/2017/20171018_1931-ZeissMilvus25f1_4-FirstLook.html
  21. I've been using C/Y lenses on Canon for photography probably since 2005. Have tried or owned most of Context C/Y lenses. My favorite lens is actually the 28/2.8. I wish they would bring this back. It's so small, light and sharp in the center. I hear you about the hollywood 28, the rending of that is beautiful. But I'm thinking 25/1.4 will probably render if nicer. I'm still deciding to keep or let go of my 85/1.4 (Made in Germany). It also renders beautifully wide open. But I'm not sure if it's the lens I'll be suing a lot.
  22. This is an interesting lens for me, since I really like 28mm focal length. https://nikonrumors.com/2017/10/16/zeiss-to-announce-a-new-milvus-1-425-zf-2-lens.aspx/
  23. I see it changed to free now on Amazon Prime! Awesome.
