  1. Jason says he had the camera for 3 weeks, so this is the first lengthily review of A7III https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9Lz0_uxpDc
  2. I'm in a similar boat... I realized the smaller and lighter my gear, the more likely I would use them and create things and have more freedom of creativity. For that reason, I'm narrowing on Sony A7rIII... I'm a Nikon user (a former Canon user) and I just wish Nikon had something similar to A7Riii. For me the IBIS and AF are key factor to allow me to create stuff easily without getting much attention and be able to travel light and carry them all the time. Yes, I love the colors out of my Nikon D810 and all the colors I'm seeing out of Canon vs. Sony look better to my eyes. The Fuji was on my list, too. But after shooting FF with Nikons, especially the D800e and D810 I need the megapixels. I do a lot of large size panos and I can't see myself using the Fuji, sadly.
  3. Cinema5D says the AF is inconsistent, which is too bad. In this video you can see the AF is decent, looks much better that GH5, probably
  4. More IBIS examples. It looks pretty good. I still want to see some panning with IBIS and a gimbal to see if has the same issues that the A6500 sometimes exhibits.
  5. The IBIS looks pretty good (1:40) and the high ISO looks very good too, at least in lab test settings.
  6. This is a conspiracy by storage makers to sell us more hard drives or other storage solutions I think Red needs to do this. You can see the writing on the wall. Sony 4k or Nikon 4k or Canon 4k small bodies, with IBIS and AF will take over the market. How long before we're talking about Sony 4k 120P? remember a 120P 4K camera can theoretically combine two images at different exposures giving you a 60P but with a Arri level of highlight rolloff. So the reason you see Red is doing mobile or doing a consumer-style 8K video, is because THEY HAVE TO, or they will be out of business. They can do a 8K consumer video camera and at the same time still do a pro-level camera with all the XLR, etc. connection. But have much higher margins on the pro camera and distribute their R&D cost with their consumer stuff.
  7. The lates recap on the Fuji: 4K with 1.17x crop and 30p 4:2:0 in camera 8 bit 200 Mbps (the X-T2 has 100 Mbps) internal F-Log --------------------------------------- Face detection available in 4K video (not available on X-T2) 1080 at 120fps (max 60 fps on X-T2) https://www.fujirumors.com/fujifilm-x-h1-1080-120-fps-face-detection-4k-video-video-specs-recap/
  8. What's your experience with the Sony UTX-P03?
Does it make sense to wirelessly boom a sennheiser 416 on it? Or is there loss of audio quality and just use a long XLR cable?

    Thanks!

I don't own a Sony UTX-P03 (although it is on my watch list!).
Do however own a RodeLink Newsshooter Kit, but that is only for my 2nd Boom to use (on the rare occasions that happens) or more often as a plant mic (or you know, the purposes a Newsshooter Kit is for...).
Also own a 200 series Lectrosonics plug in, I should one day do a careful A/B test between the three ways.
But for now I basically always go with cable, however if you find the ease of use gains worth it as a trade off then go for it.

  9. I was also in the market for a variND filter and decided to go with a set of fixed ND filters. Variable ND is a basically two (non-circular) polarizers on top of each other. My reasoning for not getting a variable ND was the following: 1 - chance of accidentally changing the ND strength. 2 - not vary accurate ND strength value marking. 3 - making it difficult matching two different shots from different cameras if I ever wanted to have a B-cam At the end having bunch of NDs is going to take more space and it's more work ( @DaveAltizer - h/t for XUME) and more expensive. But it'll provide better image quality, and more repeatability and lower chances of accidental exposure changes in middle of a shot.
  10. I've been following FujiRumors on this...but now, I'm wondering if it's going to be a better value proposition than the A7Riii or a6700 (whenever that comes out).

@Andrew Reid - have you seen the "Russia House"? There is a scene there with a very similar view

    NX2 rumors

I get this argument, but I'm not convinced. If I was a product manager inside Samsung, I am not sure if we could effectively market this. Not because the marketing message is not easy and convincing. But I would think it's still a niche group of people who would care. Beyond that, 99% of people just want to post some cool family photos on Facebook or a quick fun clip on Instagram or on messenger or Snap. When it comes down to it, consumers would go for a the "cool" brand recognition (especially at the high-end price points). That's what brands can do. And this is where Apple has such an edge. So I just don't know creating an entire DSLR line is going to help sell more phones for samsung. The more I think about it, the camera line needs to be able to support itself and any auxiliary benefit to mobile line is icing on the cake. For that to happen, Samsung might need to go all in. With several different product line, like how Sony is doing it. Action cameras, 1-3 DSLR models, etc.

    NX2 rumors

The details is what gives it a small amount of plausibility. I believe the new chip is for their next smart phone designed to go after, iphoneX, but reusing it for other product lines might just make sense. There are many factor involved: From one side, re-introducing their DSLR camera line makes no sense. Especially within the corporate politics. It's hard to tell your team why you need to close something and then have someone inside the team try to resurrect. There is also their brand. It's hard to convince users to buy their product line only to later drop the product without any further update, support or lens lines. Then there is the other argument. Samsung already has the body, they have the basic lens mount and setup, they have the basic OS to operate a camera. So internal cost of developing it, once there is an all encompassing chip to handle it all, might be reasonable, even as a pet project. Perhaps someone argued internally, having a DSLR using their chip might help improve their video on galaxy or even perhaps be used as a marketing vehicle. "The new Galaxy uses the same chip that runs the most advance digital SLR". This might have been the internal way to have gotten the green-light on this. I see your point with this. Yes, there are niche users like Andrew and others here, who like the NX1. But for other users, the possibility of investing on something that might once again face a dead-end is a no go. So because of that, I think Samsung will have an uphill battle to get large enough buyers to buy this, for it to be justifiable. With Canon and Nikon lining up with their mirrorless camera, and Sony having a huge lead, I just don't see Samsung doing this, unless they can justify a secondary benefit to another product vertical.

    NX2 rumors

Interesting post today at Mirrorless Rumors. I actually don't believe Samsung is going to bring back their camera line back. But the CPU numbers match the claimed speck. I would rate this as 5-10% plausible, but you never know with Samsung https://www.mirrorlessrumors.com/good-true-high-end-samsung-aps-c-camera-based-exynos-9810-soc/ https://news.samsung.com/global/samsung-optimizes-premium-exynos-9-series-9810-for-ai-applications-and-richer-multimedia-content www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/exynos/products/mobileprocessor/exynos-9-series-9810/
  15. you mean another type of wireless system or you mean another extra unit?
  16. @IronFilm do you recommend these as back up if one has a UWP-D11? how do you use yours?
  17. You don't really need the Goggles, but I believe it can use your head movement to control the camera. I'm not sure how organic that would look, but it might be helpful. Ask you friend which camera he has for the Inspire 2. Inspire 2 comes with two independent remote controls. One for the pilot and one for the camera operator. Have your friend pilot the drone and you can manage the camera. I've only crashed my drones on two different occasions. Both of them involving me, flying backwards and putting all my attention on getting interesting camera movements. Then, it was the moment your heart stops. Because you can see your drone tumbling downwards. I was lucky to recover my drones both times. The first time, I was in a remote village in the Republic of Georgia. I had no idea how the GPS on app works and I basically failed trying to find drone though the GPS. However, because there is a local cache video footage. I was able to triangulate the last few seconds of my footage and kept hiking uphill through the woods till my eyes were seeing the exact image that my drone last capture and miraculously found my drone in thick forest before it got dark and the storm came in. Moral of story is, you always need an observer, if you're piloting and shooting yourself. Otherwise if you have a pilot, you can have the pilot focus on flying and you on the shot. Reduces all the potential hazards. There are also very nice fancy apps. Which I have not learned to use yet. That allow you draw a flight path which avoids hitting the buildings, etc. You can then have the drone fly that path and you can focus on the shot. That way, you can repeat the exact same drone movement without worry of hitting anything on the way. Inspire 2 also has hot swappable batteries. You basically replace one of the two batteries one by one and the drone does not need to reboot and sync with the GPS.
  18. I love Casey and I think he is a story telling genius. I had no idea about his background for love of movies. This makes sense why he is such a good story teller. This is one best things I've seen in the past month. Thanks for sharing!
  19. The noise is going to be really bad...almost useless. Unless you use higher end drones. Will the final footage be 4k or 1080 ? With downsampling, you probably can reduce some noise. Anything below P4P is useless. I shot Budapest at blue hour. May look passable on small iPhone screen but it's totally crap. THEN, there is the bigger issue of focusing. The focusing on these things are pain, specially in low light. So, regular P4 has a fixed focus, which is perfect for anything farther than 1-2M. But it only has the small sensor. Newer drones have a AF. But, they always hunt and it's a pain, especially the kind of shot you described where you want change your distance from your subject and elevate your position. My suggestion would be to see if you can rent a Inspire 2 with a X5r camera. This is a m4/3 camera that shoots raw. Use a m4/3 lens and set some kind of hyperlocal length manually on your focus and shoot with that. The noise is going to be really bad...almost useless. Unless you use higher end drones. You can use P4P and set manual focus, You can also try to find some kind of a hyperlocal distance that way, but then you wont have as much low light ability as the I2/X5r
  20. It's a policy decision to ensure broader acceptance of drones. . There is a polar division among many people who have drones and those who don't have drones. The ones not having them, constantly arguing about banning drones. With a wider acceptance, more people will probably be on their side. Otherwise, if they keep it a prime product segment. There might be so many anti-drone laws, that could just kill the entire industry as a whole and limit it to a very specialized permit-based segment.
  21. One last thing, the down draft from the drone, will most likely ruffle the blanket and hair on your talent. So you probably wont get the shot you want. Remember these drones are very powerful to lift a few pounds into air. So there is a lot of down draft blowing under the drone and it may be distracting to the story you want to tell.
  22. Just when I bought my Sony UWP-D11 system....
  23. I've flown both the phantom and the mavic. @DaveAltizer gave you good advice on P4P (phantom 4 pro or phantom 4 advance as both have the 1" sensors). DJI uses a few internal sensors including the GPS for stability. So indoor shooting where is no GPS signal is actually can be a tad tricky. in US, you'e under the FAA rules. For safety of other aerial vehicles, they limit you to about 400 feet. DJI remote (with minimal interference) is about 4 miles. There is a company in Moscow that can hack your remote if you even want to fly a longer range. However, as you fly higher the air density decreases, so it doesn't mean that you can fly 4 miles high, even if there was no restriction. On P4P the lens on it is equivalent to a 24 mm lens (on full frame 35 SLR). So that might impact the look that you're going for, but at the same time it means you don't have to fly that high to create the perception of a longer camera movement. In other words, you wont this ceiling and still get a wide enough shot. The other issue is color matching your P4P with your other stuff. Also I don't think DJI is able to get the most out of the 1" sensor out in their video files. So light you shot for iso100 f/2.8 Lastly, if the video is used for an actual paid commercial. You're technically suppose to get your FAA certificate (but validate with others here) to shoot it. One last thing. Jan 23rd DJI is releasing a new product. Wait until then to make your decision. The very least, you might be able to pick up a drone for a great price.
  24. Absent at NAB in the last two years. Nikon has reserved a big boot for the NAB 2018 https://nikonrumors.com/2018/01/17/why-did-nikon-reserve-a-big-booth-for-the-2018-nab-show.aspx/#more-118912 Could this mean the mirrorless will be announced soon and it has an important video function?
