I notice however there is very little information related to it's image shooting capabilities.

It's my understanding that the stills button basically saves a frame from the video. So it has the same resolution as the format you're set to record in.

Likewise, if you're filming in raw, you'll get a raw image. If you're set to film in prores, the camera will save a jpeg frame.

I think it's more for generating thumbnails or testing lighting setups than for taking photos on holiday for exmple.

After watching some video from this camera I wonder if any of the promised features will be dropped?

That video looked mighty jerky. Granted, it was off the prototype model, and we do not know the data rate of the card that was used. But I would not be surprised to learn that some features will be cut.

BMD didn’t want to go on the record about quite a bit when I was there. Which actually concerned me, as most everyone else I spoke to was willing to.

I'm pretty sure anything mentioned on their website, is what the camera will be able to do.

Anything not on their website is a rumour anyway.

Grant Pettyd noted that the camera is ready, they just need to secure a manufacturer for the body and shipping it out.

It needs UHSii cards, and whoever filmed the clip had to do it on the sly. That alone opens up lots of possibilities and reasons quality of for the footage that's now online.

I wonder if this Viltrox Speed booster would work on BMPCC4K as well. Or we should wait for different version!

I can't remember where I saw it, but I remember one of the BM reps at NAB said the 0.71x Metabones will work on the P4K. Which leads me to believe the Viltrox will as well, since in theory at least, it will give you the same result as the Metabones one. (Quality may differ, but effect on field of view etc. lens should be the same)

I'll try and find that video of the rep if I can.

  4. @Axel That looks great for such a quick, one click color. Nice one.

I'm not sure if it's illegally uploaded, maybe illegally captured? But I'm fairly certain there's no copyright on the actual footage, unless BM made people sign stuff before they could pick up the camera right?

  5. (Not the new P4Khttp://fil.io/FL5i5/Blackmagic Cinema Camera

Years ago, @PeterF shared this link, where you can download RAW files that are straight out of a Blackmagic camera. The workflow will be more or less the same, although filesizes will be bigger due to being 4k. Try playing around with them in Premiere and see how you like it. Although the new camera will give you different images, the workflow will be the same.

As Bioskop.Inc said though, I imagine most of people using this new camera will be shooting in ProRes, which will be usable in any editing suite - perhaps not if you're on windows, but I don't know.

Here, PeterF has shared some 4K ProRes files, but I don't know which BM camera it's from. http://fil.io/FL5kj/Samples from Grant Petty

  6. @Rinad Amir There's no official footage yet.

@tomsemiterrific It's hard to say with this new camera, since there's no official samples, but things look like it's going to be great. That said, if you're struggling with grading skills, I don't think this is the camera for you. Unless you're eager to learn grading.

From my understanding, it will need a lot of post processing to get the best out of your image, unless you bake in a LUT. While that's the quickest way to use this camera, in my opinion, it defeats the point in using it in the first place.

Hi! Here are some good quality screenshots from a clip that was posted in a BMPCC4k Facebook group. I have the footage in my HDD (12 GB for about 4 minutes), I may re-upload it (original link is gone), but I already feel like a thief writing this post ^^

The footage looks clean and beautiful. No visible noise, just a fine grain. It is not really representative of the final output of the camera but it looks very promising.

I graded it with FilmConvert and the BMPCC video preset. No sharpening, no noise reduction

@Danilo Del Tufo this is his first post about the footage...

The original clip on Vimeo is only 153MB. Shame as it's also handheld, so could have been a great sample of what to expect with rolling shutter and colour/gradeability, but the compression means there's not much it can tell us that we don't already know.

Forget the SD cards, they only contain the free version of Resolve which you can download anyway. Resolve Studio comes with a USB dongle (the software can be freely downloaded as well but doesn't run without the dongle).

Well, the newer versions come with a license key, which is in the box. In fact, they had a thing I think last year, where you could send them info about your dongle, and they'd send you a new license code. I thought that key might be on the SD cards we have here, but as we've established... it's not. Perhaps it will be by the time the Batcam is sent out?

You can download the Studio version off the website too, and you can even instal it, but before it opens, it asks for this key.\

Either way, the result is the same, but I wanted to point out, we won't be getting physical dongles in the P4K box.

I found it, it’s Resolve 12.5, still wouldn’t open. @Cinegain thinks it may be the Lite version; he’s probably right.

Ah ok, well, you can download the Lite version of 15b1 on the website and try opening that?

Quick link for anyone who wants it: www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/

Speaking of the website, I just saw that on the Video Assist page, under the 'Work with Professional Software' heading, it says 'Since it comes bundled with DaVinci Resolve Lite......' So @Cinegain is right, and I'll stop looking for that card haha.

Here's hoping you have better luck with the studio version if you get the P4K @jonpais

What are we nicknaming this camera anyway? BMPCC4K? P4K? Batcam?

Appreciate it. I just looked for my own card, couldn’t find it. Maybe it just existed in my imagination. ?

I just got into the studio and found the card, but annoyingly the Broadcast cam doesn't come with Resolve. I saw the SD while unpacking and building it up last week, and just assumed it on there. We do also have the video assist, but bought that last year, so I'll look around for the box and hope we still have the Resolve card with that. If I can find it, I'll install, I assume it'll be the same version you have. Hopefully I can then update to 15 easily. Either way, I'll let you know later today.

@Federico Res Please share that original file! You get 50gb free on www.mega.nz so it's easy to link.

I am buying a lot of stuff from the Netherlands, got some friends in Utrecht and Amsterdam as well, most favorite country for sure! Which shops did you pre-order from?

One from www.kamera-express.nl and the other from www.provideoproducts.nl

Interestingly, provideoproducts now include a battery and charger with every pre-order... I hope that one comes first.

  13. 7 minutes ago, Kisaha said:

I am serious tempted to pre order, should I just brake character and go with the flow?!

I thought just that and spoke to the retailer. Not sure where in Europe you are, but here in Holland there are a few places where you can cancel your pre-order at anytime and get the deposit back. Maybe it's the same where you are?

I actually decided to pre-order from 2 different retailers, with the plan to cancel the one which takes the longest to send it to me. If I get 2 cameras in one day, I can just send one back unopened for a full refund... Or, if the wife happens to be away that day, pretend I sent one back

That’s actually the reason I was asking! I got 12, but was never able to get it to work for some reason.

How annoying. I'll check it out for you tomorrow and let you know... If I can find that SD card that is haha.

  15. 3 minutes ago, jonpais said:

Thank you. Perhaps someone who uses Resolve can answer definitively?

Well people who bought 12.5 could update to 14 free. Judging by that alone, I'd say they can go to 15. And people who get 15 with this camera or other purchases will be able to go to 16 at least.

What version did you get with the video assist? I assume 14, so is it possible to see if you can upgrade to 15 with the same license?

If not, I think I have an unused SD card license back at the studio, (came with a production camera we just bought) so I'll have a look tomorrow to see what's possible.

  16. 3 minutes ago, jonpais said:

Let me ask something: when Blackmagic releases Resolve 16, will users be required to pay if they want to upgrade?

In the past, upgrades have been included in the license. Eg if you had paid for 12.5 you could update to 14 free. I can only imagine they'll continue this trend, but don't really know for sure. Maybe it's good for the next 3 versions or something? At the very least, you'll be able to get a discount on the next version you need to buy.

If you do have to rebuy v.16 that would suck, as they seem to be updating it yearly, 14 came out at last year's NAB if I remember correctly. Like I say though, I don't think they'd make you rebuy every version...

    In short... I don't know.

URSA had a massive screen on a hinge.

Right, but that's mounted to the camera in a completely different way, and still doesn't rotate around the camera 180 degrees, the way you'd need the P4K to for vlogging. The hinge goes 90, and then the screen rotates on the other axis to get a front facing screen. (I assume. That's how most camcorder style LCDs work, but I've not used the URSA, so don't know if it's the same) That design wouldn't work on this body. You'd only get a side facing screen. You can shoot round a corner I guess? Would be handy for filming in a car.

Maybe to clarify my comment I should have said 'no camera in this design has a 5 inch screen....'

Edit: I think its pretty well established that, despite that strangely places second record button, this won't be a good camera for vlogging. I think like Grant said in the release, it's brilliant for one person crews. Especially since you could fit at least 3 with lenses in a backpack when you arrive at a location.

  18. No other camera (edit: of this design shape) has a 5 inch screen. Id imagine for the hinges and joints to be strong enough to support any rotation/articulation would significantly change the design of the camera. Not to mention how easy it would be to then damage the screen once it's flipped out. If you look from the side, the back is on a bit of an angle, which could help with the lower angles. Not perfect, but certainly better than being totally flat.

With vlogging, you'd use a pretty wide lens if you're doing handheld at yourself, so as long as you point the lens in your general direction, you'll be in shot. Do that a handful of times and you'll get to know the width of your lens and be able to guess the framing better. Not perfect, but it's certainly doable.

@jonpais don't all cameras work better on gimbals and tripods? :grimace:

  19. Does anyone think you could use the USB C for something other than power and storage?

What about say an external sound card with as many xlrs as you like all recorded to a new audio track? That would be great for events or live music shoots.

What else could it be used for?

  20. I remember reading that too. But still, sand and grit could clock up the fan that's pulling the air through. Anyway. Point is, this isn't the first camera they've designed with this system, and I'm confident it'll be fine.

Maybe it only runs when it has to? Or only if your shooting on the highest settings for over an hour or whatever?

I guess like everything else in this camera, we'll just have to wait and see.
