  1. Thanks guys regards to price. That second one is €500 with a monitor (nice to have a spare). That seems like a steal even with necessary upgrades.

Not FCPX user, but  work with macs at the studio, so makes sense to keep it the same at home. I haven't used windows forever, and I hear it doesn't play so nice with Prores anyway.

  2. Hey all,

I'm looking to change my home editing setup. Will this work relatively well with Prores 4k footage? (Coming from atomos recorders and eventually the new BM cam.)

I can get it ridiculously cheap, but fear the system is simply too old to bother with. I get confused with all the numbers and versions on computer hardware, so like to double check haha.

And at some time you will be able to buy the 4K BMPCC without the Resolve Dongle. You know that is going to happen, and that it will really be just 995 bucks.

I'm fairly confident that won't happen. Resolve is included free in the package, it's not a forced addon. It doesn't cost BM a penny to put a license in the box, but they would lose a lot of pennies for every sale they don't include it. I'm sure after a while you can buy the camera on it's own, but only on the second hand market. In fact, you're much more likely to find cheap Resolve licenses from people who have bought two cameras and only need one license.

Look at it like this. You go to a store to buy 4 apples and you're given these options:

    $2 for 4 apples

    or

$3 for 4 apples + two free apples

    Those extra apples aren't free.

Similarly if you argue that 'I already have a Resolve license so don't want the free license, can I have a discount instead?' That's also not going to work. Imagine buying a new camera that uses the same batteries as the camera you've already got. You can't ask the store to take the battery out the box and give you a discount - why would this be any different?

Just for clarity, which option did you end up choosing? I just want to make sure we're all on the same page haha

Sorry, I missed this. My sample above was 120/60p 50M.

But an entirely different form factor, smaller sensor and no VSM. Add the XLR interface on the GH5 and the prices are basically the same.

Form factor and XLRs are basically why I chose the LS300, I upgraded from a Canon XF100, so to me it was the same size and shape, but with a much better sensor and many more lens options.

  5. Not sure if it was posted already, but this might interest some, a 20 minute interview with Bob Caniglia of BMD. A lot of it is quite obvious and standard questions, but they do talk about choice of a few design elements. Audio options, recording media etc.

SPOILER: Perhaps the best info comes right at the very end, Bob is proud that BM haven't charged for an update to Resolve in a decade. If you bought the software in 2009, you can still update for free to Resolve 15. I remember some people weren't sure if they can update from v.14. It also likely means that people who buy the camera will have Resolve for life - certainly a lot cheaper than Adobe's suite ?

  6. Ah so its 50mb over 120 frames, but those 120 frames take 4 seconds to play? That's interesting. Similar to you, I recorded about 3 clips in 120 when I first got the camera and said 'meh' out loud and never did it again.

EDIT: I just did a quick test, and here's all the various info for a 120fps recording. Seems low indeed.

  7. I'm not sure about the hdmi, but you're right. It does 4k60p so must be up to standard.

50mbps at 1920x1080 is broadcast standard, so shouldn't be low at all for your slow mo shoots. All 1080p bitrates are 50mbps or lower with this camera.

Filming 422 4k internal allows you to output 1080p or i but I think only 25/30fps.

175 euros is a minuscule leap forward for what the F4 is giving you extra, as only 3yrs ago prior to the F8/F4 you'd have to have spent not hundreds but thousands more pounds to get the same leap forward in features and performance.

Holland is part of the EU, so couldn't you buy from say Germany or elsewhere in the EU without excessive import charges?!

Watch the videos of the Marantz, you'll see how they talk about supplying XLR to 1/4 cables with the purchase of the recorder. Thus you're getting a "six" XLR recorder with phantom power (but with 1/4 used to saved space, because it is so small).

Yes. But the real price difference is 200 euros, and the cheaper h6 is inside Holland so is easier on taxes (buying from Germany isn't much harder, but still worth considering when the tax man comes knocking)

I've been looking at that Marantz this afternoon and figure it would be better for many things. But since im only looking because I need to replace a USB interface, and trying to buy one device to do it all, I'm still swaying towards h6. I've read the Marantz CAN do usb interface, but nowhere official. there's no mention of it in the manual for example.

  9. Thanks guys. All well and good, but like I say, the F4 here is close to twice the price of the H6 with 3 different capsules. (€325 vs €599)

That seems overpriced. I'm not even a local, and I found a Zoom F4 in the UK for £455.98 in just seconds:

I'm not in UK :) Holland is generally an expensive place. On The website you provided it's the F4 €525, and H6 with EXH6 is €350 still €175 difference (€200 if you go by my lowest price of £325 for H6 and EXH6)

If you want to go dirt cheap instead, another option to consider is the Marantz PMD-706 for under £250:

    https://www.musicstore.de/en_GB/GBP/Marantz-PMD-706-Multi-Track-Recorder/art-REC0013499-000V000074440

Marantz PMD-706 has safety track recording which the Zoom H6 doesn't have, and can give phantom power to all 6 inputs which also the H6 can't do.

Wow didn't realise that. It does a safety track of the LR channels (I assume any capsule is LR) and the built-in XLRs all have phantom, but not the capsule ones... Shame.

The Marantz has 4 XLR and 2 1/4 jack... What's the point in having phantom power on 1/4 jacks?

No you don't, you have only four dials on the H6.
You get the extra two dials on the EXH-6, which is exactly the same way it works with the F4.

I hear ya on the other points, but on the H6 there's 4 dials built onto the recorder and each capsule comes with it's own dials.

I think for what I do, a new folder for every time I push record will be great. Thanks for the info!

Edit: just reread your reply and yes we're talking about the same thing. My bad (it's still early here).

  11. Ah yeah, didn't see the socket for 5 and 6 on the F4. But then how are 5 and 6 controlled? There's only 4 nobs. With the h6 you get extra switches and dials for any additional input.

To me the folder structure is 1 file per channel. In the example they've given in the folder ZOOM0002 I'm looking at it like this:

Stereo track from an XY capsule - room sound

Track 1 is mono - vocals

    Tracks 3 and 4 as stereo - 2 mics on 1 guitar

So basically, each file is 1 instrument in this example... that's ideal.

The question is, can you choose for tracks 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 to all be their own mono track, or will 3 and 4 forever be linked as stereo? (I assume you can chose, would be strange if you can't)

I think the capsules will always record to L/R stereo tracks, and then the 4 that are built in can be their own mono tracks.

Thanks again for the help! As with all of these things, the only way to know exactly what configurations you can have in reality, you have to use it...

  12. Thanks @IronFilm Sadly the f4 is close to twice the price here. H6 comes in a bundle with an two capsules, and then I'm thinking to buy the XLR capsule as an extra. In total, that will run €325. The F4 is €599. I'd also then loose 2 inputs, but as you say, gain a lot in other areas.

What don't you like about that file structure? I'd have thought separate tracks for each input is ideal.

  13. Thanks @BTM_Pix That's kind of what I thought about the file structure. That's perfect.

As for USB interface. I only need one input for that, so this will be overkill in that situation. If I need to buy something new anyway, I figure I'll replace my wacky location setup as well. It was save some time trying to sync up tracks later. Especially those who want guitars direct, not mic'd as those can't be synced with a clap!

From what I can tell, if I get the levels rightish on location, there's both line out and headphone jacks on the h6, so I can still plug it into one of the cameras for a quick turn around where needed.

Looks like I'll be placing my order soon.

  14. I use a GX80 on a daily basis. It's fantastic. The only downside is there's no mic input. If you don't need external audio, I highly recommend it. It's also one of the cheapest cameras of it's kind, so there's plenty of budget for a good lens. Or it comes in some nice packages with a couple different lenses.

  15. I didn't know where else to ask, and this seemed kind of relevant... Sorry if it's wrong.

My USB XLR interface recently stopped working and in looking to replace it, I stumbled upon the Zoom H6, which can be used as an interface. I also record a lot of live music, performed for the camera (no audience) and so the 4 (or 6) XLR input really got me interested. Previously, I've had 2 XLRs going into a camera on sticks and any other inputs going into a Tascam DR40 and where needed, borrowed a Zoom H4n to get to the 6 inputs.

With that in mind, needing a field recorder with 6 inputs, that doubles as a USB interface. Is the Zoom h6 my best option? It seems perfect, but maybe @IronFilm and others have better suggestions?

Edit: Along those lines, how does a 6 track recording look? With my current, nonsensical solution I have 6 mono recordings from each input. Does the H6 also record to 6 mono tracks? Are they all in the same file?

I've bought the Viltrox EF-M2 as well just in case, I just hope it would be compatible with bmpcc4k, though I don't have any EF lens at the moment.

Me too, although I can use it on the cameras I already have, so if it doesn't work for some reason on the p4k, it's not so much of an issue for me. I also have a metabones adapter with no glass, so I image I can also use that on the p4k with no problems. If both adapters work, I'll essentially double my lens collection, giving each lens a little further reach with the non speedbooster.

As for lenses, I'll mostly be using the Sigma 18-35 1.8 and Canon 50mm 1.8. They're both great lenses and give me all the focal lengths I need with lots of light. Especially if I keep both adapters with me. When I need something more discreet, I'll more than likely be using my trusty old Sigma 30mm 1.4 with the speedbooter. I find for holidays and more walk about kind of stuff, it's the perfect focal length and looks great, even with the worst lighting you can imagine. Especially since the booster makes it f1.0.

  17. In the scenario where Metabones do make a new speedbooster, has anyone heard of them trying to build in an IRcut filter into the glass element? That would essentially give the camera a built in filter, so you don't have to buy a new one for every lens, or screw it on and off for lens changes.

I don't have any experience with the BMPCC or it's cousins, so not sure how much of an issue the IR thing is. From what I can tell, it's 'ok' until you start using NDs, right?
