But what about the stills from Gimme Shelter, above?
"Albert ran the camera, shooting his subjects with a zoom lens from across the room; David did the sound"

That wasn't 500 people, if was 2, one of whom had a camera that shot film. If it had been a C300 or whatever, the documentary would be just as interesting, but it wouldn't look as good in my view.
We should celebrate the look(s) of film, and try to recapture some of the magic that has been lost in the gradual enshittification of colour that has transpired over the last 10 years. I blame log for this btw!

Yes, but if that movie had been shot on a digital camera it probably wouldn't have looked as nice.
I watch a lot of old movies on the Criterion Channel and am regularly impressed by how good film looked.

Just to pick one example that struck me recently, The American Friend, Wim Wenders, 1977

It's also interesting to consider documentary. The Maysles brothers were early proponents of cinema verite in the US  (or direct cinema, or run and gun you could call it!) So it would have been one of them with a 16mm camera and a sound recordist. Here's Gimme Shelter (1970):

If you're interested in cinema (as opposed to endless franchise regurgitations) then the Criterion Channel is incredible. Non-US users can Google how to sign up.

Since I am a portait and studio whore, I still would go with z9.
Also don't really get the z8 price point. 3.5k would have been nice and then leave out some of the highend features. Is it true that you can't shoot 240fps in HD? Recording on to SD would have been nice.

Actually, in that case, I could probably cover all my needs with just 2 bodies and 2 lenses with the Nikon/Tamron combo.
It has to be my number one option for 2024 if within the LMA, they don’t produce something that meets my needs.
The appeal of doing it all with just 2 bodies and never having to change lenses is my holy grail.
I can’t do it with L Mount because the lenses do not exist. The bodies I think will come, but it’s that Tamron 35-150 that just sits in it’s own space all alone.
And even that 20-40… That is such a perfect indoor everything and outdoor landscape and architectural lens. The closest is the Sony but it’s f4 which outdoor is fine but indoors less so.

If I had to make a choice right now about what system to go all in on it'd be Sony. But I wouldn't be happy about it. Like @MrSMWit's not that I hate Sony, it's just I'm not inspired by them. I don't ENJOY using their cameras and I've never been a big fan of the images they produce. It's not that they're bad, it's just... They're Sony.
The FX30 is nothing special, but the price? It's hard to beat. It'd be very easy to buy 2 or 3 of them for my work and be done with it. And the system's long term health is guaranteed.
I'm thankful though that I'm not in a position where I need to make that choice, and can further see what everyone else does in the next year or two before deciding what direction I go in. I'm probably putting too much faith in Panasonic, but I do think they'll announce something big next year. I think they have to, their long term viability I think depends on it.

    Size and...err, that's it.
Other than provide espresso on tap (and it's size), agreed, - ticks every box for me. Every.
Yes. I have considered every single possible camera and lens combo available. Z9 kills it in 3 areas for me and the only area the R3 (for me) beats Z9 is weight.

    The A7 IV at £2.5k and A1 at £6K?
In that gap there's the A7S III and the FX3.
Not sure there is much of a market for the A7R IV, as those who can afford it are more likely to go for one of the above cameras or spend a bit extra for the A1 if they need 8K and high res stills?
What puts you off the Z9?
It seems like there's not much it can't do.
    Have you considered EOS R3?

Bridges the gap between the IV and the A1 I suppose?
Not too bothered about the price to be honest. For me it’s whether it can do the job I want it to do.
For instance I have been considering the Z9 and the new Hassie (in different scenario combos) and those are +50% and +100% respectively, but ultimately it’s not the cost that puts me off but other factors.
I’m just not prepared to buy another camera or system unless it’s near zero compromise and though cost is a factor, it’s nowhere near the top of my list. Not that I am made of money either!

Some people use their digital camera to "scan" negatives. If you go on the Moment website, or their YouTube channel, there are some articles/videos that explain the process. I think you can even use your phone.
Going with one camera and a few lenses is the smart thing to do, but I went through a vintage lens buying phase a few years back, so I had a few old lenses from most of the major manufacturers. I made a rule that I'd only buy a camera if I had a lens for it. Needless to say, I now have too many cameras and lenses.

Just to keep this going. I shoot with an F2 and a F100 both Nikon in BW with Hp5 from a big roll or any Colour film I can find thst is cheap. I alternate between the two cameras and basically only use them when I am on vacation.
@mercer because you asked about caffenol. Thats how I do it. It works pretty well and you can just dump it. you can also push two stops without much trouble depending on what you are after.
Colour film has become crazy expensive and my fridge stock is nearly dried up. Apparently its because china is hardly doing the chemicals anymore or something. 14,-€ Colour film my ass...

I just got back into film photography. Last month I did an Evil Dead inspired horror photo shoot. This is the first time I've done a conceptual photo shoot with a model. I resurrected my old 35mm Canon Rebel and bought a couple of lenses. This is shot with the Canon 28mm 1.8 (all wide open) on 35mm with Kodak Portra 800. I have some more horror themed photo shoots set up, and some pinup style shoots as well. I also recently got a Yashica Rookie TLR camera and some 120 film.

I feel the same way about 32bit audio.
What is next, are they going to market 64bit audio to gullible fools on youtube?

    Exactly!
And give me a 4K camera with as much dynamic range as the ARRI 35, but without the price tag!

The thing I keep going back to, even after people talk about the benefits of being able to downscale it to get even better 4K, is that we really aren't even using 4K to its true potential and probably never will before it gets replaced by 8K. Even downscaling to get "better" 4K feels silly, because the difference is so negligible unless you're watching on a big enough screen. It feels weird to argue against higher resolutions, and I don't necessarily view it like that in my head, but this rush to 8K and beyond feels more like a way to charge us more for cameras than a genuine need or necessity. Give me a 4K camera that can film 120fps without any risk of overheating and with all the features we are genuinely asking for before trying to entice us with 8K that 98% of us don't need.

Even though I have n* number of cameras capable of shooting 4K and above, I don't have a 4K TV let alone an 8K one.
If I was absolutely realistic about the number of people even remotely interested in watching anything that I've shot then, including myself, then my total audience is precisely one.
And on a lot of occasions, this number can actually be less than that as I'm barely interested in watching any of it myself these days either.
So, on that basis, if I was to only have cameras capable of shooting 1080p then I would have a 100% match with the display technology of my audience.
That doesn't stop me wanting all the Ks though.

n* - precise number redacted out of acute embarrassment regarding the extent of my addiction.

Personally, I'd really appreciate the extra digital zoom capabilities, but for shooting 1080p (as I do) the 6K sensors are just as good and most cameras don't give you the digital zoom options that I'd really like, so the resolution of the sensor is secondary in that sense.
Also, if the battery life is crap and it overheats, then it's giving me zero footage rather than even sub-optimal footage, a pretty fundamental issue.
The other issue is that if you're using the sensor to get a 4x digital crop (1080p --> 8K) then your lenses will be by far the limit to the quality rather than the sensor.  You might find that a 6K sensor upscaled to 8K has the same level of fine detail as an 8K sensor without scaling.
Assuming you have a fast enough machine.  Many people would argue that any decent machine can edit 4K, but with many cameras shifting to IPB, 10-bit, h265, decoding that footage in real-time is no small feat at all.
If I end up with a GH6, which lacks the 2x zoom function from the GH5, then I'd probably just program a mode to be 4K 1:1 and swap to that and then crop in post.  Hardly ideal, but would give me a bit more reach and still be downsampled to 1080p.

The evfs for photocameras like the lumix gx1 and oly pens were tiny. It would be awesome if someone did a mod to them so they could be hooked up to the bmmcc via hdmi.
