mechanicalEYE reacted to BTM_Pix in Canon delivery
Yeah, he's done really well there persuading London to switch on its Christmas lights for him to shoot that test.

mechanicalEYE reacted to Andrew Reid in New Blackmagic Announcement Soon?
Haha it's such a ridiculous year.
Not just a strange day!
I have absolutely zero use for the 12K URSA.
Why on earth didn't they get the Pocket Pro with full frame Sigma Fp sensor and internal BRAW out instead? I am pretty sure they still have one up their sleeve.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the 4K RAW is from an enormous S16 crop... 2.8x crop factor!
There is no S35 4K mode is there?

For my needs the R5 might be the FF camera for me. Going to wait to see what the A7SIII and GH6 brings. Maybe the R5 will get a price drop by end of year but I doubt it.
That or I will just get the GH6 and wait for prices to come down before I get a FF.

Stand corrected. I agree it looks great.

I guess that it is impossible to build a camera without one or two flaws (not saying that is the case of the new Canons, they have more than this). And even only with one or two flaws, will be people calling the camera "completely unusable".
If Panasonic release a GH6 with 4k120 no crop 4:4:4 12 bit ProRes RAW, clean ISO 12800, Ibis with 15 stops, S35 sensor and $2000 price, someone will shout "but it is not full frame, it's crap" or "I need 4k240 ALL-I, it's crap".
Best (at least in my point of view) is to wait for the real world reviews, with real people using it for real jobs, which know what they are doing. Now it is only paper specs talk and sponsored reviews.

mechanicalEYE reacted to Trek of Joy in Canon EOS R5 has serious overheating issues – in both 4K and 8K
This thread is insane. All this over a chart without any actual tests.
I remember buying the a6300, a7s2 and a7r2 despite the internet overload about overheating, single card slots that no professional would ever use, 8-bit 4:2:0 video with blotchy zombie skin tones, crop on everything that's not 24p, only 4k30p and so on. I live in Florida and never had any issues despite using it on a gimbal all the time in the sun and shooting longer takes, it doesn't take much to swap batteries or turn the camera off when not in use, or not leav it sitting out in the sun all day. I took them to Africa on safari shooting thousands of frames and hours of video, also took them to Dubai, Egypt and Israel in August when it was upwards of 125f. Now we have a camera that shoots 8k raw, 4k120fps with amazing AF, class leading IBIS and can even shoot 45mp stills with bursts of 130 raw images or infinite jpegs if that's your thing, and its trash because you can't shoot an entire wedding in one take?
Wow.
Can't wait for the shitstorm with Sony's cripple hammer on the a7s3 and the pendulum to swing back to the R5/6 and how "I can work around the issues, its worth it for raw and 120p." This reads like a Sony Alpha rumors post.
LOL!

Clearly environmental factors play a role... Andrew K @5:06 says that over the three days he had with the R5, the camera did not overheat.

While 20 mins overheating times in certain modes are a bummer and could be a problem for some people, I for one, am glad they took the “lets put the feature in” versus saying “heat limitations wouldn’t have allowed it” and released something less exciting or groundbreaking. They would haven been lambasted for it either way.
It’s a lose-lose for them and they made the better decision here in my humble opinion.
Wether the headline is “R5 falls short: only offers 4K60p cropped” or “R5 has potential to overheat when recording 8K RAW(!) 4K120p(!), or oversampled 4K from 8K HQ mode(!). The later headline is forgivable!

Well I dont think I will ever run into the problem. I dont shoot long clips + where I live the temperature rarely exceeds 23 degrees.

What about enviromental temperature, yes in the desert you will overheat quickly, this does not mean it will overheat in a siberian winter too.
This should be tested in realworld environments to see how bad it is

Thanks : ) Seems a win-win and the top dreamy one for now. What misses there? They've listened after all, isn't it? ; ) I feel myself tempted to buy one : -)

Why are we bashing Canon for including 8k raw INTERNALLY? They also could have just left it at that, but also included All-I and IPB in 8K - a pretty amazing inclusion. Add on to that that they do give you all of the great internal 10-bit codecs (All-I and IPB) in 4K and HD and up to 120fps in 4K, why are we complaining?
If you don't want the giant file sizes, just use one of the other modes. Solved AND you still get 10-bit 422. If you want the highest quality and don't care about thousands of dollars of storage, use raw and All-I.
Or use every other camera manufacturer (outside of Panasonic) and just shoot in 8-bit 420 up to 30fps or to an external recorder.
What Canon has done with these two cameras is pretty mind-blowing. I thought the S1H would be king (and in some ways it still is) for another year or two, but these cameras are close to top of the heap.
Yes, I would have preferred the Canon R6 to have 4k raw at much smaller file sizes, but hard to complain when they have given us so much in a seriously compact form factor. I love the S1H, but it won't ever be my photo camera due to size and weight, so the R5 could easily become both video and photo for me (or the R6).

mechanicalEYE reacted to Matt James Smith ? in My thoughts on the Canon EOS R5 8K monstrosity - 1TB footage per 50 minutes
Have to say I see the high data rate of the 4K 120fps as a positive. It's 4X the bitrate of 24p, which is exactly what it should be if it's going to look as good. I'd be complaining if it was less!
When looking at the table, the data for 4 minutes of recording time looks huge but then that's actually 16+ minutes of footage.
Personally I only shoot short clips in 120p anyway. Though the fact DPAF works in 120p means it'll be an absolute killer gimbal camera and that'll mean people wanting to do long takes.

Same data rate as the sigma fp, but at 8k dci instead of 4k
Only time will tell if the internal storage will get cheaper soon, good thing they already have 2tb cards for it.

Just watched Peter’s R5 promo video/inspiration piece. Purely looking at the footage...
Not going to lie...all the footage looked pretty damn good. All with DPAF.
Will be interesting to see a deep dive into the image. I’m sure there are things not to like, but for YouTube/vimeo delivery...looks very nice.
Overheating issues it seems. I wonder how bad they are.
We finally have 4K120p in a mirrorless camera!

mechanicalEYE reacted to currensheldon in Canon EOS R5 8K monster official topic
Despite the monster. specs and the exciting features, I don't think they'll price this over $4,500 USD. I'd guess above the 5D range, but not in the 1DX range (something like $3899 USD would be my guess). While this has "better" specs than the 1DX Mark III, I think it is more in line with the 5D range and many people who buy the 1DX series do so because of the giant battery life, extreme durability, and tank-like size, not so much 5.5k Raw recording and megapixel count. While I'm sure the R5 will be durable and weather sealed, you'd probably still want a 1DX on the sideline of an NFL game or on safari if on assignment.

I want a refund! Or a working camera. Whichever comes first.
