Juxx989 reacted to austinchimp in What makes an image cinematic?
Interesting topic that comes around time and time again. I think it's one of those eternal questions that has no real answer but here is my take.
Yes you can produce amazing work on a GH2 or an iPhone but there's a reason professionals use professional cameras. I shoot most days largely as a one man band shooting events, sports and interviews and when you use a tool every day you really get to know it's shortcomings and it's the same when you're shooting dramatic work. The point of a more Pro camera like an Alexa, or an Ursa mini, and a BMPCC certainly has more in common with these cameras than with a GH2, is not that it's a magic fix that gives you instantly cinematic results, although in some cases that is true. The point is that it won't let you down if you use it right, and it gives you far more options in post later.
Unless you're a world class cinematographer you will likely screw something up on set from time to time, exposure or colour balance are particular issues. And a camera like tweet BMPCC will give you a far better chance of fixing or hiding the error, which leads to a better result, which leads to a more 'cinematic' result. I believe that cinematic can often just mean professional. If your work looks like the work of a pro, you're more likely to provoke suspension of disbelief and that's the point at which an audience stops caring about the image and starts getting invested in your story.
But a GH2 or iPhone or Canon Rebel create all kinds of issues that you might not be able to handle on set or in post, thereby leading to an image which looks compromised or amateurish, and thereby reduces the audience's trust in you. An Alexa is so expensive because it largely gets out of the way and allows you to work with complete trust that the tool is gathering all the correct information, while you can get on with directing and shooting.
In summary, you can get great results with cheap DSLR style cameras, but it takes a lot of work and fiddling and mental energy, while raw and 10 bit log may not make your film great but will make it a hell of a lot easier to achieve greatness.
Take from that what you will.

Shot some test footage with my cheapo macro rings and came up with this.
    KS Hack @ 160mbs
NX 30mm 2.0 + Extension Tubes for most Macro.
    NX16-50s for wides
Used my 3 Flashlights for lighting
All Da Vinci Resolve Studio from H265.
    Used EOSHD's Classic Flat NXLOG
I may have gone overboard on the sound!
    Flat and Graded example.

Had fun and learned alot... Im assuming my shutter was wrong or the flashlights had been incompatible as some slow mo shots flicker.
Also I pushed a few shots to much as they look somewhat posterized.
Constructive comments or thoughts are greatly appreciated

We are also forgetting the Ursa Mini 4k model, hell they are only 2995 new. I have seen them for 2400 bucks used. 2400 bucks, that is a hell of a buy for a real Camcorder style camera. I am not sure a GH5 is worth 2000 when I can get a Mini for 2400! They have the bugs worked out on them. And the thing shoots Raw and ProRes, Raw for 2400 bucks and a s35 sensor!
Heck maybe they are a better buy than a used Canon C100 mkII? I have never used either one but it is 4k and has Raw. Opinions.

Nice one! Great atmosphere, sound is very important and you master it alright.
The Resolve version is the paid one, or the free?
At some points the image is too stressed, you would need a couple of better led lights or something, but it was a great exercise nevertheless!

Hi, couple days ago just for fun i shot this awesome yamaha grizzly ATV, ursa mini 4.6K in raw 3:1, 4.6k 50/60fps and 2k 120fps. I used canon 16-35 f2.8 L II and canon 70-200 f2.8 II IS lenses. I recorded everything to ssd drive via cfast to sata breakout cable. 70-200 shots are handheld, for 16-35 i used glidecam devin graham signature series. Graded in resolve 12.5, edited in premiere CC.

I was expecting this and I think it is a major mistake to release the GH5 without the 400Mbps update. First impressions mean a lot and everyone is eager to read the early reviews. Once people see "10bit GH5 worth nothing" a few times it will be hard to make them forget it half a year later even if the new firmware brings a completely new experience. Think of the Ursa Mini 4.6K and how bad the first batch was. Rental houses even state it's not suitable for professional work even today..

I am sure the GH5 will not be all we hope for. Not going to be that much different than a pumped up GH4. But unless most of us win the Lotto I would say it will have as good as specs as most people could ever afford. It will be as up to date as any camera for less than 5000 bucks used that I can think of.
James Miller is sure showing it can produce some damn nice output if you have the skill. The specs are just about impossible to turn down,

I don't want to rain on the GH5 parade, but I would assume that the camera will not be as good as hyped... it will be good... great even... just not the end all be all a lot of folks are making it out to be... or hoping it will be.

I think your right. It will be pretty much like the GH4. A great camera that some love and others feel disappointed.
We will then make a little list of features that would turn it into the perfect camera.
By the time a new camera with those features arrive we have made a new little list of the next couple of must haves.
    And so we dance.

In theory you could stack a Large Format - Medium Format - Fullframe.
Or Large Format - Fullframe - BMPCC.
And probably some other combinations. The problem I guess is knowing how and having the time
EDIT: There is the Medium Format to Leica-M speedbooster. And if Im not mistaken a Leica M - Fuji X coming....

Not sure if there are any concise and up to date videos @fuzzynormal, as things tend to be a bit fluid in the Magic Lantern world. But this is a quick and easy workflow, once you get it set up:
    1. Virtually mount MLV files with MLVFS  (this is just takes a few minutes)
    2. Import resulting CDNGs directly into Resolve for immediate editing - OR transcode to Log 444 masters and edit elsewhere. Resolve transcodes very quickly.
I'm finishing up a 17 minute short doc from 6 hours of footage using a similar method to this, except I use After Effects to transcode. This is the slow method that you might have used before. The debayering in Adobe Camera RAW through After Effects is slightly better than Resolve. My doc is destined for festivals so I want to squeeze every last drop of goodness out of the files that I could. But if I'm doing a corporate job with a fast turnaround I'll let Resolve do the transcoding. The quality loss is minimal - Camera Raw just has slightly different colours, better noise handling, better highlight reconstruction and lens corrections. You'd want to be looking fairly hard to spot the difference.
Hey, if you want to mess around with an MLV to test it out and don't have a ML camera to hand, here's a file that's just a few seconds long:

    @Kisaha
As reading out of your postings, you are making a living out of filming Kisaha. So, you want to earn money...Jumping into the "every year a new camera" race doesn't contribute to making profit. The NX1 is a very nice cam with flaws, as other (much more hyped and expensive) cameras too...So you have to ask yourself, if your clients/audience will see a difference between the NX1 and a "NewestHypedCamera". Probably not. Review forums (like DPReview & co.) are a kind of parallel universe, having nothing to do with reality of normal Joes (as audience) or with getting payed jobs. It's a world in which gear guys film some months with camera A, get tired of it, trade it and buy a new WOW-cam. After maximum 5 months they get tired of it, trade it (with loss) and buy another system. Content wise? Mostly ZERO...Only (oftenly) exagerated gear talk, pixel peeping, armchair expertise and so on...
I invested 65 Euros some days ago for a survey under 461 Facebook German participants (all relevant age groups, men/women, etc.) on Facebook. You know what? 78 % of them watch video on their smartphones/tablets, another 17 % watch on PC / laptop, only 5 % watch videos on TV. The best one is: from the 17 % watching videos on PC, a vast majority not even has a FullHD resolution... ;-)
So the pixel peepers live in a parallel world and dream about the 16K future and numerous Hollywood jobs - they will never get...The reality is max. 1080p. Same for corporate clients...
So...Get your money in good promotion for your business and keep on your work with the NX1, if you like it. Stop living in the parallel world of gear heads...You will never get a paid job from gear heads. It's simply losing time, energy and money.

I am wondering, what is more profitable to make an EF lens to NX camera adapter, or to make a NX lens to X camera adapter, where X can be Canon M/Sony/m43, whatever really.
An NX to X adapter can create a whole new market for the many NX lenses on ebay and can keep our investment much stronger than the opposite.
Next year, NX1 will be almosy obsolete, Canon and Fuji will be very close, or will surpass it, Sony A7markIII or A9 will surely will be the best Sonys ever, and they already sell quite well, Panasonic will have a cheaper version of GH5 before Christmas, etc
while the unique and under-respected NX lenses will still perform great, for a great price.
16-50S is unique among ALL systems, 10mm unique in APS-C mirrorless world, 30mm, 45mm, 60macro and 85mm among the top on their respected classes, 12-24 + 50-200 some of the best cheap zooms I have ever used, the pz is 5 times better than the Sony one (and no Canonikon equivalent) and so on and so forth.

As I understand the Samsung cameras are extremely sought after right now including their hardware that is why prices keep rising, because they are becoming rarer and rarer and its mostly because of this forum right now and the great guys behind the bitrate hack and Luca's adapter and work in progress smart adapter.
Not to mention Samsung NX1 and NX500 imao are still amazing cameras and they are cheap well used to be anyway. Its a good sign because now that dirty "&()!"%)¤ acting president of Samsung aka Son of Samsung's actual president, is in jail and that means there will be a brighter future for Samsung now that the corrupt bastards are removed.

I was sure the price of NX stuff would tank completely by now...
I hunted down a perfect NX 50-150 (no box) for $800 about a month ago... and was kicking myself thinking by now on the eve of the "ALL MIGHTY" GH5 it would be like $700-$650 today...
But nope the price of NX gear is Spiking again!?  I could sell for a $150-$250+ profit right now... Crazy...
I got my NX-1 body used from BH photo over a year and a half ago and I could sell it for the same or a little more...
If anybody is in a NX dumping/Selling mood the time is now... seems to be a sellers market....  may be the last peak before it falls of a cliff...
Im still on the fence... Looking at Blackmagic Cameras with rose colored glasses at the moment.

I need to watch this every day till it becomes my mantra. (this only applies if your not losing gigs because you don't have the right gear)

Totally doable, Ive seen it happen on other forums many times. Logistically its not a problem, they would still ship individually.
And I've also done what you did by emailing. I asked a retailer in Sweden if I could get $500 of on the A7sii because they had earlier had such a discount. They said yes.
So these "limited" time discounts aren't ver limited at all.

    Thank you for your interest.
actually the 30mm electric motor is powerful enough, I use it with anamorphot lens that weighs over 300 grams without problems, but more than 600 grams could start giving problems, which is why I want to build a system with guides in linear bearings, for reduce friction and facilitate sliding of the lens.
No, NXL-A is the best full frame Canon lens control system for directors and film makers who shoot with Samsung nx1 camera.
It also keeps them alive yet these cameras ...
It will be ready in about two weeks and I'll build a dumb NXL version with the predisposition for the hardware and an already modified version.

If the 30mm works as a host lens perhaps any pancake NX would work (16mm 20mm)
If you figure this out for us this may be your million dollar Idea... You would just have to hunt through all camera makers for a host lens and create an adapter universal autofocus adapter for.. Sony, Canon, Panasonic etc...
