Agreed. 10-bit will always be a bigger leap in image quality than 4K, and I'd love to get that extra bit out of Samsung's amazing sensor. With their efficient compression, it might not even be such a huge boost in file size.

I want 10bit for nx1 as well! Possibly internally :-P

The footage I've shot in the past month alone, with just my NX1/16-50/Ronin M trifecta, is proof to me that Samsung could crush everyone else if they play their cards right. They've nailed everything except the codec. The Autofocus is insane, the BSI sensor is a beast, the build quality is pro, the batteries last long, the tech inside is from this century. Even the h.265 is good in theory, but rather than use the superior compression for smaller files, they should use it for higher quality, 10 bit. Sure, the Sonys offer "more", but look at the price tags.

After the nx1, I really doubt sony can counter attack in the apsc arena. Samsung has access to the most advanced computational hw (the cpu in nx1 is a 'monster', by camera standards).

Samsung simply has to further tune its sw (fw) and add slog2 and vlog, along with cropped 4k and, if technically possible, even higher bitrates and 10bit recording.

    Opinion piece, by Andrew Reid
In only a few months, 57 new features have been added to the Samsung NX1. Meanwhile Panasonic have been more keen than many to evolve their products, adding a 4K Photo mode to the GH4 and 24p for 4:3 shooting, a nod to anamorphic filmmakers. But it isn't enough. No anamorphic de-squeeze for instance and now the time it has taken for V-LOG to reach us has been too long.
Firmware is a new battleground and manufacturers must play the game better.

Same here, and I don't know where he got 5% from. Where I live it's 14%.
Off topic, It's funny how some say "Europe", "Africa" or "America" like it was just a country

I don't. I prefer paying 5% less and having the 30 minute recording limit I'll never reach anyway.
Of course I understand there are plenty of people who'd pay the extra for not having the limit, but I don't think I'm the only one who doesn't have a problem with 30 minutes max.

In this last year I shot a bunch of rather meaningless clips and pictures while out for a walk or when biking to familiarize myself with a rather modern camera (Sony Nex-5R). Last time I used a video camera was 20 years ago. Me and my friends enjoyed shooting short movies alot at that time and we plan to come back to it before we are too old for this shit. Anyway, I am able to use a rather nice set-up reminiscent of a mini western saloon (from the outside at least).
We are huge fans of Terence Hill/ Bud Spencer movies and its only natural we want to make a short based on those. Script is kind of finished, it will be an assassination attempt like the very first part of "my name is nobody". Dont get mad about the the gun thing, there wont be any. This assassination attempt will have a strong comical twist. Also me and my buddies were rather skilled in martial arts when we were young, so any action involved will be some kicks and punches (hopefully still good looking)
Just watched "my name is nobody" recently to get a feeling for it and man those old movies are really nicely framed and shot. I would like to use this movie as base model. But those nice dusty browns and yellows with tons of color seperation within them will probably be very hard to match. Same for those reddish glowing skin tones.
So my question is: What else is important to consider when shooting a western like this? Any kind of advise is highly appreciated. Never done that before;)
-Camera will probably be my trusty moire and aliasing happy Nex-5R (Kit-lens and 35mm T1.4 lens, maybe some FD primes and zoom lenses)
    -Grading in Resolve
Ah, and this is just for fun, neither me or my friends work in any way professional in this field. But still I want it to be as good as possible.
Here some screen grabs from the set-up trailer I shot to get my buddies hyped...and one from "my name is nobody" as a reference.

    Meh, just like the A7s.

NX1 is still the king of ultra low budget slow motion, and soon the RX10mk2 too.

I'm no video expert, but I was amazed just how natural the colours out of the NX1 using the following settings that I think I read Andrew was using somewhere along the line ... Gamma DR, Contrast -5, Master Black Level +10 & luminance at 16-235. At 4k everything seems a bit too sharp though and now prefer it left at zero. But for colours looking natural, and usability SOOC, this camera is pretty amazing I think. https://vimeo.com/126548066

Just watched this. Very disappointing... Largely because we all know the camera can do much better. Unfortunately this production did little to make a case for that argument.

The cam and lenses should be in this week, and we'll prob do a quick shoot with the NX1 as a b-cam this weekend. I'll try and get something up shortly after.

The elephant in the room with these articles that lead to the inevitable Canon monologue.... Why not bash Nikon? at least we know why Canon do the things they do, and at least they do release things like the 1DC (Camera of the year!). Sometimes I think they are pressured by Sony to stay a step behind.
Anyways.... A7R II looks damn cool, hoping the 5 axis stabilisation is good, that would be the cherry.

I bet there is no Global Shutter. They would have highlight it.
As for 14 bit, remember that ALL the A7 cameras have "14 bit raw" written on their specs on the Sony website. So the guy on this forum just saw 14 bit and he thinks it is true 14.

Truth is 99% chance no global shutter, and 80% chance no real 14 bit raw.

I agree that a true global shutter this isn't. However, it could be down to F5 territory (5ms I believe?) in S35 mode. I'm very curious to see what the IQ is like with the full 135 sensor. Sony says it used in sensor binning which (in theory) is better than line skipping. Could have some aliasing but shouldn't have much moire. Personally I'd rather see a 24mp camera  with a true global shutter, full 6k readout down sampled to 4k, and faster FPS/focusing but this is quite the camera.

Even with a perfect global shutter the test videos still were pretty weak in highlight handling and moire and macro blocking in the slo mo.  I'm not optimistic for this camera.  I think by the time the A7S mark II comes, we'll have something better maybe.  But I could be wrong.
Also you can't knock Canon too much - they have skintones nailed down very nicely.  The new Sony S Gamut has a weird magneta shift to highlights and yellow-y skintones.  I'm rooting for Canon to return to glory.
