Plus people HAVE confused the dicussion and made it about how iphone video really is better than say.. a d750. It also gets weird when it's the newest iphone with 4k etc, trying to be fancy. Someone might use it to "simplify" and still say no one should ever shoot video on an iphone 6 -_-
Regardless, being able to change focal length makes absolutely everything more appealing to me than a phone

I did a shoot yesterday with my 1DC and Contax Zeiss glass and loved the results. It was a nice reminder how great it is. Low light, color science, and full frame all great on it. Such a clean but beautiful image. Still gonna hold onto the 1DC until I do proper GH5 tests.

Liam got a reaction from Stanley in Reframed TV Shows
I don't know if everyone else has been seeing all the tv show reruns being like uncropped to fit 16x9. Mostly I'm just confused how it's possible. I guess they kept the original negatives and rescanned everything for higher resolution etc. But it seems they also shot (s16mm instead of 16mm) - or whatever format - in 16x9 with the foresight that they would be uncropping later when tv standards changed..? PLUS a lot of the lenses vignette like crazy because of it.. meaning they were using the wrong lenses for the camera?
But it's also weird to me that they'd even want to do this. It fits the screen now, but vignetting (a ton on That 70's Show), performances that were supposed to be cropped out (people breaking character on Friends etc), once I saw a body double whose face would have otherwise been cropped off on Malcolm in the Middle. It's bugging me.

I've been a Panasonic user since the GH2 and each upgrade has been fantastic. They've successfully delivered worthwhile improvements in every area of function and image and seem to really listen to their user base. It's an exciting yet reliable system to be a part of. The GH5 looks certain it will continue this trend and two areas of promising improvement seem to be low light and colour given the current videos (an area where Canon has historically had the edge).
However, like @Flynn says, a lot of Canon users love the colour science and can't let it go despite the cameras lacking functionality and features. If that specific mojo inspires you to make films then you may struggle with a switch to Panasonic.
How do you use your cameras? For earning money, for filmmaking on the side, or a mixture of both? I use them for both so the practicality and features of the Panasonics win the day. I think I would feel like I had one arm tied behind my back if I tried making a living as videographer with a 1DC now.
My other thought, was that if your dream is to clear your debts and get to LA (not far off mine!) then I would be making all my decisions based on what would get me there faster. At the end of the day, mojo, lowlight, codecs, and all the jazz we are all guilty of getting sucked into on this forum, are secondary to having a great idea, writing it and shooting it. If you've got something dynamite, it can be shot on anything and other factors such as writing, lighting, acting and editing will be what get your piece noticed.
Final thought, networking in LA will probably advance your career more than any camera ;-)

HitFilm and/or Vegas Pro are my top votes for editing if you're starting out.  (or Premiere Pro if you'll likely be working with/for others professionally in the future, as it is a near universal program)

As for camera, just stay with your Panasonic GX1 and Nikon F mount lenses, that is an absolutely fantastic starting point for a beginner!!

Yes, there are better options,  many of them very tempting indeed, and very attractively priced. But this is a never ending circle that can suck you down forever....

First  you consider the G7, it is so cheap secondhand it is almost free! No brainer decision. Let's buy it.
But.... the G80 isn't really "that much" more is it in cost to buy? And it has IBIS!

However... now we're nearly halfway in price to a GH5, and that is omgmyballz amazing!!! Should get that instead.

But however now we're nearly halfway in price to buying a Kinefinity Terra 5K!!!! OMGAMAZINGZWTF!!!!

Whoops, that is my phone ringing, let me answer that.... oh hello Mr Bank Manager, what are you calling about, my overdraft? Oops.

Thus I say stick with you GX1 and Nikon lenses you have for now.

If  you simply ABSOLUTELY CAN NOT resist the itch to spend money on gear (I know I know, I've been there, I understand!!), then instead spend it on filling in the gaps in your lens collection (maybe you need a UWA? Or a portrait lens? This too can go on forever....). As at least lenses can last you for decades.

Or get a few quality audio pieces (microphones can also easily last you over a decade! I just purchased a newly two thousand dollar microphone myself... :-o ).

Or lighting gear! Again, this should last you longer than a camera body will. And quality lighting used effectively will go much further towards making  your film look amazing than a new camera will!

Then once you've progressed and learned  more, maybe in 2018 give in to buying a new camera? By that point  you'll be able to pick up a G80 for today's G7 prices, or less!

Hitfilm express is probably the second best free NLE, after resolve (but a $20 add-on might be kind of necessary). Not that you're against spending any money probably. can also run on a lower specced computer

100% second this. I use Premiere for editing, and resolve for footage printing, but I know several people who enjoy Hitfilm and make some seriously good stuff on it.

Liam got a reaction from Rudolf in Please explain: Video vs. "organic"/cinematic look
Organic is completely different from cinematic I think. I'm alright with us calling House of Cards cinematic, but organic it is not. "Organic" can be shot poorly, in bad lighting, with insufficient dynamic range and resolution, at f8, on a one inch sensor. the important element would be the camera or grade, maybe a nice grain, proper highlight and shadow rolloff, maybe cadence.. "Cinematic" is the production quality argument, with HDR and high res, good lighting, and apparently doesn't need good colors these days (having just watched Sneaky Pete on Amazon)

It should. Only reason it wouldn't is if they rearranged the physical pieces in the mount or the shutter. But if it doesn't work, there will be a new dedicated one soon enough

Before the A7s the best iso was an APS-C. It comes and goes and crop factor doesn't affect exposure. A 1" Rx100 kicks the ass of many older APS-C etc.
