Beritar reacted to SMGJohn in IBIS, OIS, DIS, motion-sensing gyro...
IBIS + OIS are always better than some digital motion sensor which always ruins the image in one way or another with artefacting, there just no way around this, maybe in the year 2050 we will have AI capable of reconstructing an image perfectly.
There some wobble on the S5 with a wide angle lens, but if you have a wide angle lens with OIS/OSS should the wobble issues not be removed? Considering Panasonic uses the same method as Sony for IBIS + OIS, the sensor only does X - Y axis with roll and lens does pitch and yaw.

Canon IBIS is pretty mediocre, I would say Sony newer cameras does a better job with IBIS + digital IS in video mode than Canon does, Canon have the same issues as Olympus and Fuji in that they are solely made for photography use, they all seem to suffer when you start panning or doing walks they go all over the place, whereas Panasonic and later Sony cameras seem to really refined their IBIS for video, Sony A7IV does not suffer from these panning issues.

Honestly, Canon is just making excuses with R5C, it should have IBIS LOL, you could always just make it lock itself in place like some cameras do when you do not use it however there is an argument for not using IBIS, it makes the camera 100g lighter, it makes the camera a lot more sturdy, IBIS systems break REALLY easily on impact, but if Canon worried about breaking and the sensor floating around when the IBIS is not in use, I do not understand why they could not just invent in a locking system that locks it in centre.

Some frames from the Panasonic 12-32mm F3.5-5.6 on the OG BMPCC.
This lens is a good size appropriate option for the OG BMPCC as a general all rounder and has the additional benefit of IS.
It is pretty slow though but this has the advantage of you not really needing ND when you are in what passes for broad daylight in Copenhagen.
The big downside is that there is no manual focus so you have to rely on the one shot AF on the camera to pre-focus.
Again, though, the small aperture is an advantage here as you generally have enough DOF to get away with the AF getting you in the ballpark.

Yes you're right, DR Boost is ON in photo mode but not always, it is ON from ISO 800 (the same as video mode with other profiles than Vlog), this is why DPreview and Photonstophotos show a better dynamic range from ISO 800.
I agree about dynamic range, 10 stops is ok. What bother me is the noise reduction, I prefer to get 10 stops with details than 12 stops with less details in shadows. I don't know why Panasonic don't let us the choice to use zero sharpening and noise reduction on the GH6, I know you can in RAW but this is not internal.

The GH6, from my limited experience, doesn't behave the same as other cameras (at least in photo mode). The first thing I noticed right off the bat was that you need to expose more like the final image you intend on getting, not just shooting for the highlights. Also, you should know that the DR Boost mode is always ON in photo mode (Panasonic confirmed that in a live stream). 13 stops in video mode is probably generous on the GH6, but so is 15 stops on the A7sIII. Anyway, I think anything above 10 stops is AMAZING for rec709 and current viewing possibilities! 13 stops way more than what was going on just 10 years ago, and on a M43 sensor. I don't think we're going to get much more real differences with CMOS sensor tech anyway. Of course, there's still room for improvements, but we're not going to get 27 stops DR 20bit gigapixel images without a major change. In the meantime, we've got AI.

Maybe on the S1H, but not on the S5 and S1. The 4K of the GH6 is very clean compared to the GH5 but it uses more noise reduction, I compared with the GH5 and G9, and while the GH6 looks better with far less noise, there is less details.
You can see the difference in this video :
The 5,7K is really good though, there is better details and less noise reduction, too bad for the small crop, and the IBIS is bit weaker than on 4K.

I'm not sure about zero sharpening but I have the GH5, GH6 and S1, the GH6 is less "sharp" than the GH5 in 4K. There is far less artificial sharpening, even when I set the sharpness of the GH6 at +5, the GH5 at 0 is still sharper. However the Open Gate 5K of the GH5 is still beautiful, there is almost zero sharpening and noise reduction, the image is very "organic".

The issue I have with the GH6 is the new noise reduction algorithm (called 3D), it makes the low light really cleaner than GH5 but it also smear details in some areas of the image in low light even at ISO 200 (a bit like the Samsung NX1 but much less aggressive), even with the NR set at -5. I think there is no miracle, we speak about a M43 25MP sensor so some concessions must be made, but I was very surprised to see the GH5 retaining better details (the trade off is the noise).
The 5,7K is a different beast, it uses more sharpening and a bit less noise reduction (the footage is sharper than the 5,9K and 6K of the S1), however there is a little crop in this mode and nobody speaks about it.
For me the big advantages of the GH6 are the new color science, the 4K 120fps and the very good stabilization making (almost) possible handheld walking video.

These guys are crazy... This is not a way of doing reliable business with cameras. Sounds to me like when a bad screenwriter cheats the audience.
EVERYTHING must be very clear to bring respect which means every rule of promotion, rebate, whatever, enough clear with transparent deadlines, etc..
This is a way to kill some reputation of a brand after decades of building up. Seems clear to me someone should be fired there. I'm sorry for my harsh words but this utterly pisses me off. I am in this industry for more than 25 years as professional player and I simply don't accept these practices. No way.

I was using 3 cameras when I was doing weddings photography, 2 NX1 and an NX500 with a speciality (oddball lens) on it. All these cameras were on me at all times, but never both video AND photo. Still can't comprehend how you do it. I always have a partner/assistant with me, even for the easiest of jobs..
Sometimes we were 3-4 people for video and 2-3 for photography..
An 24-70 as a workhorse was the most used lens usually, 24mm is good for small group photos, and 70mm is an alright focal length for portraits. The oddball lens on the NX500 could be the amazing NX fisheye or the pancake 16mm..the workhorse lens was the 16-50mm (24-75mm equiv) and 2-2.8f. unique lens and always negated the need for the Sigma 18-35, as at those mm (at 32-33mm to be precise) the NX is 2f, with an incredible I.S, both wider and longer. With the other NX I was usually using the amazingly small 45mm 1.8f for more "artistic" portraits. This lens has a ton of character, especially for the silly price..
Just a different way of doing similar things, I guess!

Not to turn this into a GH5 thread, but the reason I've kept my GH5 and why I planned on sticking with it was because it's still a very good camera, and if we're being honest for most of us there's not really anything out there that is so heads and shoulders better that we NEED to drop thousands of dollars on a new camera. The only reason it's not my a-cam right now is because I got a really great deal on an S5. But the GH5 is such a good camera, and I'd planned on using it for at least another 2 or 3 years. At this point I don't know that I'll ever buy a NEW camera again, because there really hasn't been that huge of a jump since the GH5 came out. I think I'll be perfectly content being a couple camera releases behind unless something big happens. If I'm still shooting Panasonic in a couple years I'll probably get a GH6.
To me the M43 system had/has so much potential. In some ways I feel like it was a mistake to try and compete with larger sensor cameras, even though it resulted in incredible cameras like the GH series. Those cameras are what brought them to the dance, so to speak, but it was only a matter of time before everyone else would catch up, and in that period between when the GH5 was released and when a full frame equivalent that could match its capabilities was finally released, Panasonic had stopped innovating in the M43 space.
When I got a GX85 I really kinda realized what the true potential for M43 was: small lenses and small bodies. I still take the GX85 and 35-100mm f2.8 into places that I could never bring an APS-C or full frame equivalent into and get beautiful, stable footage every time. It's such a small package that no one even gives it a second thought to. It's such a discreet, compact package. You'd have to use a bridge camera from Sony to get comparable footage, but it'd have a smaller sensor and worse stabilization.
It's late, I'm rambling, but I do hate seeing people pronounce the death of M43 because I see so much potential in it, but I don't know that it'll ever reach it or if it's even viable to try.

Gerald is one of the only long-form reviewers on YouTube, he doesn't have much competition.
Someone like Kai is not going to be much competition
The thing is Gerald is a box and spec sheet reader, the presentable face of a specs sheet.
It is useful for finding out info although you could find it out a lot quicker by reading a web page instead.
He is a tester of what it says on the box. If it shoots 8K he is probably going to show you what the wall of his studio looks like in 8K versus all the other modes.
Without wanting to get rude, or personal, What's missing is any kind of real world creativity. This was apparent in the Sigma Fp and especially Fp-L review where he dismisses it for not having IBIS and fancy AF.
That was yet more proof if you needed it that he doesn't shoot anything. Those Sigma cameras have a unique look, a unique form factor, and Cinema DNG.
I think Gerald has an imaginary user in his his mind whenever he does a reviews. His imaginary user is always turning up for work for an online advert shoot, rather than on a street to shoot some poetic cinematography, or showing up at an indie film that he wrote himself.
So it is always going to be heavily biased towards "getting a job done" based on having all the boxes checks... AF, IBIS, 120fps, and so on.
It is a pity that in so many years he hasn't developed a craft, because he's had the perfect opportunity - so much spare time, money and freedom to put these tools to good use - but seemingly no actual interest in cinematography.
Anyway, that's just my opinion of Gerald.
A bit like as was the case with Bloom, these people get put on a pedestal because of internet fame and their work just doesn't justify it.

Watching the Gerald Undone video, and it's really a bummer to see how much of a Sony shill he has become. He will bring up negatives, but then downplays them or just outright dismisses them as not important. Meanwhile, he'll temper his compliments of other cameras. The titles of his reviews from the last year or so really sum it up, honestly.

The 'R' series was always a snoozer for me personally and this is no exception.
The video specs are weird AF: 1.2x crop on 8K & 4K60. 4K24/30 uncropped but binned. No 4K120p. S35 mode oversampled but 30p tops.
Props on the new tilt screen mechanism though, finally a best of both worlds solution.

For me, I would ideally like to see:
    For definite:
    A. Official confirmation a successor to the S5 and S1 is coming, even if it’s going to be one single line.
    B. An announcement date plus a launch date.
    Ideally:
    C. Whether they are moving to PDAF.
    D. Whether 4K 50/60/100/120 is going be cropped.
With a season that starts in April each year, I need to be ready to go at least a full month in advance, fully tested, familiar with, batteries, chargers, processing, quirks etc.
If A & B happen before the end of this year, there is still a chance for me with L Mount, but even then, C & D also really need to be on the cards because if not, there are other options.
And I am not holding my breath…but would still like to see it.

The GH5 did not have an OLPF and had zero Moire.

I think you might be surprised by the S1. The tilting screen on it is awesome and the weight increase is marginal IMO.
I think for the GH6 its partly a question if the dual gain sensor applies to stills. One of the downsides of an M43 camera in general is the lack of dynamic range and color depth. That might solve it.

I noticed a difference in detail when it comes to Fuji vs Panasonic but I think its the weird X-trans filter thing more than sensor size.

I have found there is so much detail in the 24mp S1 Raw files that I can't imagine ever needing more than that for any application. I have cropped in on an eye from a portrait shot and found there to be enough detail for the image to be usable. The most I'd ever crop in for something is like 50% and its got that covered easily.

S1 (so S5 and S1H) gives me incredible low light quality. Never had FPN but never underexpose by 5 stops in lowlight. 🙂 I underexposed a good deal and recovery from the Long Gop codec was spectacular to me.
Still, the GH6 looks extremely tempting to me. What I also love is to have the mode dial at the right hand where the shutter button / record button is located. Whereas for my S1 I have to reacht left for the mode dial. My little GX85 has it on the right side and it just feels right there for a hybrid. 4K 50p 10bit 422 Long Gop and All-I on the GH6 with juicy bitrates are very tempting indeed.
ISO 6400 give more detail than the GH5s as shown in Jordands comparison with the SH1. If I was in the position to buy a system camera for video I would go for the GH6. Actually I would wait a bit to see the footage coming out of it. If the digital edgy sharpness of the GH5 is gone it would be a no brainer for me if buying a new camera. I just don´t buy new cameras usually though.:)

Yeah, I quickly tested that. It is much less pronounced with HLG rather than V-Log, which is not a good choice for underexposured images anyway and only starting to be visible with 5 or more stops of underexposure. In which point the image lacks so many details and contrast that is in my humble opinion unusable anyway even without the horizontal lines. When and why would anyone want to use an image underexposed by 5 or 6 stops is beyond me to tell you the truth. Not in my use scenario...thanks for pointing this out though, it was a fun experiment!
