Hi zero - it's a long old road to get to the level needed for commercial work - the main attribute you'll need to master is getting on with people (usually rooms full, all with completely different ideas lol) All the basic principles of sound engineering are exactly the same in TV, Film and Ad work, so you're looking at several years of slog and learning with little pay and long hours to absorb all the skills you'll need, sadly I don't think a youtube tutorial would help. Try looking for internships or work experience on short films as a starting point and get your head down learn and enjoy. Good luck - it's worth the time-sink and pain in the end !

    It's a combination of things -
    1. Sony cameras don't handle difficult white balance situations with any grace
    2. Sony offer a huge degree of options that control the sensor
    3. Sony give you profiles that require grading - and I mean, proper, years of experience as a colourist grading, not just drop on a lut or tweak sat and curves
Combine this with low prices and any tom, dick or harry can grab one, stick it in pp9, wave it around a baby with leds, sunlight and an incandescent bulb and wonder what happened to the skin
They aren't cameras for everyone, thats for sure, you can mitigate many of the issues, but they are cameras that demand, in certain modes, a very high degree of cameramanship and skill.
    1. Desaturating the higher luminence can work wonders to help take the green and yellow gills away.
    2. Stick to pp0, and your fave creative style, if that's too limiting, stick to cine 4, s.gamut.cine. If that's ever too limiting, then you are going to have to start reading technical documentation to understand what the options do and how they do it.
    3. Just look at the size of s.gamut 3, and think what is going to happen when you cram all of that into the comparitively tiny space of 709 and understand why colourists can charge what they do. Then never, ever use it.
Or just grab a camera you can get decent results with because clever engineers did all that for you and plenty more besides

Are you a shill for them? Because your post is nothing but dismissing and downplaying issues other people have with the camera. The overheating issue is a huge one, I'm not telling the talent "sorry we have to wait a couple minutes while the camera cools down to do the next take/ask the next question/start your song"  or "sorry can you do that take again the camera shut off in the middle of it". The NX1 (which came out two years ago) has the same size sensor, never overheats, has better RS, a better 1080p mode, and a headphone out for monitoring audio, and can be had for about the same price. Operationally it is a far superior camera.
Don't make excuses, the only reason this is a 4K camera is because someone in marketing demanded it.

I think Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 may be good solution for you. It's a s35 lens and you can use the Nikon version, adapt it to Samsung with aperture control.

I would rather not take sides. I support what both of you are working on and at this point they are quite different mods that appeal to different peoples needs. Vasile is working on a lean and clean mod with only a few features(right now its just bit-rate) and Kinoseed is working on squeezing as much as possible out of these two amazing cameras (witch to date has been amazing what he has been able to get out of them).
Having said that It doesn't really matter what bill gates stole from Steve jobs or what Steve stole from bill gates they both have two different products for two different demographics. Besides I would hope that if someone comes up with a better way of doing something or something super useful the other would use it as well. You guys are both publishing as open source don't forget.
Full disclosure, All I really care about at this time is the bit-rate hack so I am leaning towards vasile's stripped down mod at this point in time but I really like what kinoseed is doing as well. As stated above my preference would be a world were everyone could get along and work together to exchanging ideas, even if they are working on separate projects/mods. unfortunately I know that is not really the world we live in  .

Just wondering if anybody else here shoots 24fps with shutter speed set at 1/40? and what is your opinions on the NX1s
I find using 1/50 looks far too choppy, I remember noam kroll saying the gh3 was kind of famous for this also.always looked best at 1/40.
it would seem to fit with what we have already seen samsung do with this camera. adding rediculous sharpening and noise reduction, and even when you think you have turned it off or lowered it, you in-fact have not. It seems their aim was to have a deceiving image that looked cleaner and sharper than any other camer on the market.
A good example is the attached video at 58 seconds, compared to the 5d in the rest of the video. the nx1 just has such a video movement feel at 1/50.

Geoff CB reacted to BrooklynDan in Is the Alexa still king? (Actual question, not an argument)
I work in a rental house and see Alexas, Amiras and Minis fly off the shelves all day long while F55s and Dragons sit in their boxes. And it's only increased as the attention has turned to the newer models and the original Alexa has come down in price. People who might've once settled for a prosumer-style digital cinema camera like the C300 or F3 can now afford to hire an Alexa, and many do without a moment's hesitation.
It's the only camera that really operates on a "what-you-see-is-what-you-get basis". The Canons come close, and the Reds and Sonys are a hideous mess of LOG profiles, LUTs and complicated menus. And one thing I can say for certain is that the Alexa is the only camera that is dead-on with its ISOs. ISO 800 on the Alexa is a true ISO 800, seven stops over and under middle-gray. The Canons and Sonys are somewhat faster. The FS7 in particular is way off. I would reckon that ISO 800 on that camera is closer to 1600.
Meanwhile, you can take the Alexa out of the box, hit LOG-C on 2K Prores, pull up the Rec.709 LUT on your monitor, light the scene using your light meter like they did in the good old days, and go home with an image that can look good without requiring any special color-correction sauce beyond gamma and color tweaks. And it holds up on a 40-foot screen, And it never breaks or fails. At my workplace, we practically never receive customer support calls regarding Alexas. They come back in perfect condition and our technicians turn 'em around in a matter of minutes. Meanwhile, these Reds are making my co-workers tear their hair out.
Simplicity, reliability and raw image quality independent of specs and numbers is where it's at. Arri gets this, which is why they keep winning despite the exorbitant cost of their products.

Yeah this pulling the bitrate from the hack to support the newest firmware is not good, splitting an already small community up in to two groups

There is more than one person doing the hacks, and the person in charge of creating a great package of them decided to drop the bitrate hacks and memory hacks by Vasile to update to newest firmware. The latest hack package DOES NOT WORK on 1.4 only on 1.41. Meaning that if I want all the features I have to deal with two different hacks on one camera that each require different firmware to run. NOT an ideal.

The 85mm is not worth it, focusing is bad. 50-150 is incredible and well worth the cost.

I'm a newbie, I've just started shooting photo and video 9 months ago.
There's a lot of flaws in my project, colors and contrast are not matching between the scenes, Bad light set up, etc...
I've shot everything with a Nikon D5500, hand guns scenes has been shot with a 5DmkIII raw (not by me), AK POV scenes with a go pro.
I did all the editing on adobe premiere
I wish to improve reading your advice on this forum.

I from the other side just consider getting the 16-50S and/or the 50-150. I am reconsidering my options very dynamicaly (almost real time!) and I do not see anything better with similar, or slightly more cost, than a NX1+16-50S combo. The practicallity of this, is just priceless. IBIS is the only thing missing, but the NX1 is perfect size/weight wise, for the most image stabilizers (e.g Ronin), and I do not see any APS-C camera surprass it anytime soon, and when it will, it won't be cheap (including glass), so I huess I am good for at least a couple more years, which is a lifetime for equipment of this sort.
Together with the NX500, is just a perfect combo for 4K low budget jobs, and if I want run and gun 1080p, I go C100mkII.

Geoff CB reacted to Azzardo in Custom Cropmarks in the MOD?
Hello everybody, I own an NX1 and I was thinking if it were possible to implement some Custom Cropmarks and black bars in the Mod, like in Magic Lantern.
If I remember well, in early versions of the original fw there were no lines or cropmarks, so maybe comparing new ones with that ones we can find the way.
They would be veeeery useful to frame correctly for a cinemascope look, or to avoid shooting on the "safe area" - In case we have to stabilize footage in post.
What do you think? Is it possible?
    Thank You

I would say it is, blended with other genres (a crime thriller/ drama), and with some good character development (similar to "The professional")... muscle & brains mix well.
And if it isn't action, I would say it's got one of the best action scenes ever filmed.
I agree Jonesy, Matrix is right up there too... and it's also a mix.

Ronin is a masterpiece that few appreciate because of it's length. Car chases and gun fights are great and shot wide.
Die Hard is Die Hard, but I also love Die Hard with a Vengeance.
Mission Impossible 4 (Imax was incredible)
Still to this day LOVE The Matrix. Amazing action, great pacing.
