I own a lumix cm1 and find it offers superb performance as a camera and as a phone.  battery life smokes an Iphone.  the images are also superb.  It aint just a smart phone.  It delivers stills just as good any fixed lens premium 1" sensor camera.  and it's always with you!  compact cameras take up another back pocket alongside your phone, car keys, wallet etc.

"Infinite" is not a word that can really be applied to any aspect of any camera or lens.

It's not that they make the image or the lens better - it's that they increase your incoming light by at least one full stop - that's A LOT - and they widen the field of view of the lens you're using.

This is exactly the same effect as a). using a faster lens, b). having a larger sensor that does significantly better in low light. c). in many instances any focal reducer will have the effect of slightly sharpening the image - it's an optical property of a focal reducer. It's not a lot, but it's there.
No. Not "hands down". That's just you own opinion - and everyone will have them.
Very very few people who have used both say that about the GH4. I've used both and I completely disagree with that.
The ONE big thing misleading people to think that is the SAMSUNG lenses are very clinical and can give a more "video" look.
But there's no reason that you have to use those. I don't even own one.

It's the lens - not the camera.

Each different lens design has its own auto-focus abilities and accuracies. There is also the ever-present possibility that your particular copy of that lens is not performing as well as it should be. Some lenses have the ability to have their auto-focus mechanism updated or adjusted - either by downloading firmware into the lens itself, or by making adjustments to the lens' back focus.

Check into what other folks' experiences have been with the exact lens model you're having trouble with.

And NO, not "any DSLR would focus instantly". Not by a long shot.
I have a Canon T2i and a Canon 6D and 'some' lenses focus nearly instantly while other lenses, even Canon's own cheaper ones, take so long to focus I could call Stevie Wonder to come manually focus the lens and he'd be faster.
Also, my GH2's, which are technically not DSLRs just like the NX1, focuses so fast with the 14-140mm kit zoom that I'm not even aware it's doing it sometimes, while some of their other auto-focus lenses are FAR slower.

    It's the LENS.

Someone please tell my why a power zoom would adjust focus
It doesn't have a focus rocker on it, only a power zoom rocker... Something that should be on the lens for free anyway, like with all the other power zoom lenses from Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, etc.
Canon saw yet another money spinning opportunity to charge us for a zoom rocker. Pathetic.

RX10? Built in everything, headphone and mic jacks, nice 1080p, 24-200mm equiv f/2.8 constant lens, image stabilization, about $500 used.

still dirt cheap, manageable files on any computer, large sensor, sort of organic look, easy colors. ignorantly buying it, learning a little, and upgrading immediately is totally fine. if they're insanely new to video, I'm still not sure I can think of a better first camera

Doubt it, Sony have heat issues.
If size is what matters I agree, but if one just wants a s35 4K camera I think one definitely should look t the much cheaper NX1.

at the moment the samsung nx500 is $497 shipped with 16-50PZ, sure it is 4k cropped instead of being downsampled from 6k but the bitrate is 40% higher so the 4k image quality should be very close for 1/2 price (the small and sharp 30mm f2 pancake lens is also down to $154) (but the nx500 has a 15min max recording in 4k, is it 30 minutes max on the a6300 ?)

Didn't even think about using it as is without the video assist. That would suddenly make it a whole other fun way of shooting indeed. Although, I haven't been shooting on film back in the day, so I'm no natural at figuring out if with ISO800, 180°, f/2.8 I'd be over- or underexposing for any given situation. There I've come to heavily rely on the in-camera exposure meter and histogram unfortunately.
That said, indeed, I'll probably be selling off two of my BMPCCs to get one of these. The option of global shutter is awesome and the battery upgrade is more than welcome! Plus, you can really use it as some sort of action cam too. Just add some GoPro adapter and you can use it with all the GoPro accessories and mounts. I don't know, I'm more excited about this little camera than the expensive 4K stuff from any given manufacturer that's not shipping out yet. Except perhaps the A6300. Might be a cool combo those two. One for the solid image and the other if you'd need the 4K and slowmo capabilities. Two little cameras, roughly the same price, other applications, but might be a perfect synergy.

New short film from Macgregor shot on Sony F35 is simply mouthwatering. I dare to say that I haven't seen anything better imagewise in digital camera world, but I have to admit that great grading also helps in this case.

Out of curiosity: is it possible to compare the fw for nx500 and nx1 in order to implement in nx1 the choice of having cropped 4k, for digital lossless zooming in video?

It's all about the codec parameters. They chose file size over detail. They could have made it so that the user could choose.

I'm quite sure that if nx1 could output in 4:4:4 10/12bit, it would sell so many units that samsung could even think about starting again the production :-P

I actually wouldn't buy that camera if it was 8bit 4:2:0
People need to start shouting from the roof tops that it is no longer good enough. Whether Andrew chooses to believe it or not, the combination of 10 bit and 4:2:2 (or higher) is where you can really start to get the best out of log footage. I don't want to climb a mountain for 6 hours to then find my shots ruined by banding. 10 bit solves this issue and really helps the log curve store the information correctly.

    I could live without 6k.
    Want high DR.
And 4K RAW to the Shogun instead.
Otherwise I would probably buy it.
But the NX1 sounds pretty close to it. A NX2 would be nice, if they pick it up again.

Let's put a "1" in front of those numbers and give it a shot!  180 Mbps should do the trick.

skin tones overall are nice!  and stabilization is amazing.
The camera was interesting to use - especially considering that it's a 200 ASA camera and has moire and dynamic range challenges - sometimes this is interesting to have to maximize something with limitations. It's difficult, but I guess it disciplines you.

If you are starting from scratch, pre-order the A6300. Buy some adapters (get a Lensturbo to achieve the Full Frame look you like), get a Tokina 28-70, buy some cheap Nikon Ais primes or Canon FD primes . Invest in a decent microphone/lavalier set and decent tripod. There is one caveat here though, a good photo set and a good movie setup are not one in the same. I have 2 D750's for my photo work and  2 NX1's for video.

I've been looking around the internets, but can't seem to track down all these full frame, industry leading stills cameras, that also shoot 4K/60fps (4:2:2, high bitrate).. being sold by Sony, Panasonic etc for $1000. Can you share the links?
I also think it's a bit shameful that in early 2016 we can buy for around $100 some phones/cameras from "insert Chinese brand" that record 4K video, but are being asked to pay a minimum of $1,000 for the same thing from sony and Panasonic... Because that is 100% how the real world works, especially comparing apples to oranges.
God only knows the shame that Arri must feel about their prices... Not even 4K lolz

I've found similar to above. For clean image quality:
    100-1600 in 4K/UHD
    100-800 in 1080p
You can push in certain situations, but these are the safe limits.

The deal is that sensors have what they call a "native ISO", which is their own internal native functioning gain level within the device. So all other ISOs are either an amplification applied to that or an attenuation applied to that, so that's why some cameras might give its best result at say 400 ISO.  But like you've heard - it varies from camera to camera.

As far as I have been able to see, the response of the sensor in the NX1 doesn't seem to show any bias towards any one ISO - meaning that it all just looks equally clean in the lower range regardless of what its "native" ISO might be. That's good engineering.

I agree with Casey. Just follow normal exposure and ISO techniques and the NX1 should respond with no surprises.

    Hell of a camera...ain't it?

Do you enjoy the process as much as the product? I have an A7s and it's superb for aurora shooting. But it's "horrid" to use (with Shogun and v-loks). The BMPCC on the other hand is something I rather enjoy using. It's simple and elegant and gives you something you can play with (ie grade etc.) back home. And you will be carrying it with you at all times. To me, a lot of the enjoyment is the process - the product isn't the sole or even primary goal.
