This is yet another example of where I think in some ways we have actually gone backwards with this whole race/gender thing. Where ’progressivism’ becomes effectively re-gressivist, instead of just evolving society beyond such things.
The example that stands out was whole deal about Finn in the Star Wars movie- I have never in my life once thought about the skin color of stormtroopers. Faceless fodder, no attention paid. But in 2015, it’s a call to war for both smug, insufferable race-baiters and actual, real racists to rage endlessly on about. Instead of, oh wow, putting a face on a Stormtrooper, that could be interesting, the actual discussion being had make me take note of the skin color, whereas I would have never thought about any of it in the first place.
And apparently, nothing much has changed in 2016. I don’t care who you cast; I have little interest in any Ghostbusters without Bill Murray, and I’d assume many others feel the same. But that doesn’t stop the race(gender)-baiters and the real sexists (although sans 12yo YouTube trolls, I doubt many actually exist) from entirely shaping that’s the discussion here.
Oh really? Go point out those terrible, awful, hurtful misogynistic comments. Oh wait it's a YouTube comment section, where anyone who's been on the internet for more than two days knows as a cesspool of tween-age trolling.
I'm not reading a whole YouTube thread, but the comments on the first page are hardly "obvious misogyny" when the majority of them are basically "this sux, stop ruining classic movies hollywood" or obvious blatant trolling and baiting.

Actually yes (and sorry because I have a BA in anthropology) - this was how the majority of the world operated for roughly 70,000 years.
There was no farming. There were no lords or slaves.  We lived tribal-based.  And we worked 20 hours about a week.
The world of today is based on the simple fact that life became unsustainable with the increasing population growth.  Not enough nuts on the ground.  Hunting animals was actually more done recreationally, as it wasn't easy back then with rudimentary tools to hunt down animals that are faster than us and stronger than us.
Agriculture started because of the population increase.
This is when different structures of society formed. In China, it was more a rent-based farming structure.  Rice was the main crop.  You would have your own rice paddies, and give a cut to the person who owned the land.
In Europe, it was feudal. Most people were serfs.  You worked for a king.
The world of today is run primarily by the military-industrial complex, as president Eisenhauer mentioned.  Our lives are dictated by those who have the biggest guns (nuclear weapons) and the most money (corporations).
We can't ever go back to Hunting/Gathering.  There are simply too many people and not enough resources.
It's this world we were born into.
We can choose to run and participate in our countries in a fair and just way, such as many European countries and Australia/New Zealand, or side more with the USA, Russia, and China, which run their countries based on fear.

Canon have a knack for this. When all around them is a circus of silly menus, bad ergonomics and underperforming images given the raw power under the hood, Canon with their underperforming specs have over-performing images with very good automatic white balance, well thought out menus and no frivolous stuff to get in the way on a shoot. I like the simplicity.
Clearly you get a lot more colour information in a 300Mbit or 500Mbit 4:2:2 file like on the XC10 and 1DC, plus it helps the colour science is bang on in Canon LOG unlike in S-LOG.
Clearly Sony know something is wrong otherwise they wouldn't have added 3 separate S Gamuts to the FS5 for different WB temperatures.
Sony seem hell bent on squeezing every last drop of dynamic range and colour gamut out of the image, then packing it into as small a file as possible... the end result is a bit of a car crash.
The A7S II was almost the 'dream camera' wasn't it... but I've barely felt compelled to use mine... I keep picking up my NX1 instead.
That's because the body design of the A7S II is soulless, feels awful in the hand - it has the ergonomic charm of a brick. They went backwards from the A7S and that wasn't exactly perfect to begin with.
Please Sony hire some designers from Fuji or whoever were responsible for the NX1 body at Samsung.
Then sort the menus out - it isn't rocket science.
I think they underestimate the importance of this... the shooting experience.
I feel a little bit guilty when I see someone struggling through a shoot with a Shogun bolted onto the top of a small Sony mirrorless camera... great specs and we should support the push, in the face of Canon's paralysis... but it's a horrible shooting experience isn't it...

But RAW image has to be scale down because bitrate would be insane in this case (24x around 30MB = 720MB/s). Maximum write speed of NX1 is 60MB/s (see http://www.cameramemoryspeed.com/samsung-nx1/sd-card-comparison/ )

If raw video gets unleashed through hacking, then all these questions will become 'the past'. Consider this: nx1 does 1) full sensor readout up to 60fps, then 2) scales it to 4k or 2k, then 3) encodes it in h.265 in real time.
Now...think about jumping steps 2 and 3 and just saving the raw sampled 6.5k image to sd card. Even if that were 12bit instead of 14, even if 24/25fps instead of 30/60, even if only for few minutes, this would be the greatest achievement ever in a sub 1000$ camera.

I would buy a couple of spare bodies if this ever happens.

Actually it's not that hard to say - a lot of anthropologists have studied this subject very thoroughly.
The last tribe that lived this way is the !Kung.
There was a very famous documentary about this - one of my favorite docs of all time.

and we weren't always living this way. We lived 70,000 years or more as hunter gatherers. A time where the average work week was about 20 to 30 hours. And men and women were equal. We've only lived in a land of exploitation for about i think 3000 years.  A blip compared to 70000 years.

Higher bit rates and raw video is my dream for NX1. I love the raw out of this camera. It blows away anything my Canon is capable of. I've taken a grossly underexposed photo of the city in the dark and managed to pull out such ridiculous amounts of details that I thought it was voodoo.

I started this research when the nx1 first came out, saved and tracked the firmware, and then started digging into when the rumors of the exit started happening. The tech inside this camera is just magic. Compared to what other companies are doing its a few years ahead. And due to samsung being able to roll their own chips it seems they didnt cripple anything because it was too costly. Im not going anywhere!

It was written in the .cpp files showing the hz of the sd bus, this would be an incremental increase test that would just be raising it until it crashes or to the limit stated by the sd association. And if it changes depending on what type of file is being written to it. As well as tracking the sensor and chip heat out put to see if it is underclocked for a reason. Lots of fun.

Not at the point yet, still tearing it down. The base tizen didnt seem to change much through the updates. It was the control files for the camera, written in c and a whole new ball game. I do about 15 hours of work into this a week, which isnt much considering but things are moving. If you wanted me to just make hello world appear it wouldnt really prove much, at least not in the way that this camera works.

Have not got to that point yet, still diving into the code and doing a control file comparison, as the updates for the camera happened they state what they changed, and that is what the major key point of what Im doing is. Its one of the nexts steps though.

I can update as I progress and post summaries of what I find. Just to find the rgb888 and lut info I had to look though about 15000 lines of code. Its tedious. But worth while for me in the end, so I will continue to dig and deconstruct. And update!

I posted about the work Im doing on the firmware side of the nx1 a few pages back, but it was/still is hidden for some reason.
**no longer hidden on page 11 at the bottom. Much more detail about what I have found on the camera.**
To sum it up, I have been working on this the better part of 6 months, didnt know anyone else was interested until I found this thread a bit over a week ago and posted my findings. Im at a point of comparing the changes in the firmware versions to see how the code is written. I have uncovered the bootloader, the file format and language used for their custom control files for tizen, info on lut, rgb 888, sd card bus speed(its quite low should be ush1 u3 but its not set close to the speed stated in the sd association docs) and a few more things.
My goal is similar to what the guy said on the gh2 hack. I had a hacked 144mbs gh2 I used for 5 years until moisture killed it a few months ago. The tech inside the nx1 should be capeable of pushing the hevc and the sensor to the limit, even if it shortens the life by 4-5 years its still cheaper than a red by a magnitude.

Ideal goals for me are raw/compressed raw output, see if cdng or another compressed raw format would work. As red raw is just their version of jpeg2000 modded for cine work.
There is not a deadline I have set to finish this, as this is just one of many projects I have on the go but comparing it to other cameras its quite promising.

For anyone who has not seen the effect for themselves - doubling the bit-rate will blow you away.

The Panasonic GH2 had even more issues with the image quality than the NX1 does, and with the 150mbps hack the difference is HUGE.
EVERYTHING is better and all the problems of mush in the image and macro-blocking and colors breaking up all just vanished.

Really the only reason I don't use my GH2's as 'A' cameras is because their older design has less dynamic range...maybe 9-stops. 9.5 if your exposure is absolutely perfect.

If we were to double the bit-rate on the NX1 even the Noise Reduction and Sharpening would be FAR less of a problem because they would both be working with so much more image data.

Looks good to me, but it's very slow. My workflow has been editready full rez to proress 422. From there I can do trims in streamclip and output 4k trims to Prores (for shots that will get reframed, tracked, stabilized, whatever) and 1080 for general editing. Prores in excellent for doing this sort of thing, there's just no visible generation loss that I have ever seen. Plus, the H265 files are so small, I keep them around, in case I want to run one out some other way.

Argh! I typed a silly long post and then hit backspace outside of this box and ... poof ... it's gone
    OK, shorter version:
If you start telnet server as described and connect to camera you can do following:
    killall dfmsd; sleep 2; dfmsd -p &
This will kill original dfms daemon and start a new instance that we can now use by dfmstool command that sends commands to daemon like this:
dfmstool -s "this is a command"
Be careful, as soon as it encounters an invalid command it stops processing all other commands so we need to do killall... to restart it (it does not affect the camera state).
The command we want is sys_param movie size 2560_1440_30p. Yup, it's still in the firmware, it has no crop and it supports peaking. Why they removed it from the menu I have no idea. It's labelled as MJPEG on screen but it records HEVC as others and is limited to 29:59.
    dfmstool -s "sys_param movie size 2560_1440_30p"
Here's what ffmpeg has to say (I have to find a way to set the quality as well):
    Stream #0:1(eng): Video: none (hvc1 / 0x31637668), 2560x1440, 11280 kb/s, 29.97 fps, 29.97 tbr, 120k tbn, 120k tbc
Oh, yeah, remember how there is no 1080p at 120fps in NX500? Think again:
    dfmstool -s "sys_param movie size 1920_1080_120p"
    And output of ffmpeg:
    Stream #0:0(eng): Video: none (hvc1 / 0x31637668), 1920x1080, 38589 kb/s, 119.88 fps, 119.88 tbr, 120k tbn, 120k tbc
If you really want to you can put just the command in the nx_cs.adj file and call it a day (dfmsd will parse it and finish) or put a small script in test.sh that will do it for you (there is no touchscreen available while dfmsd is running). You could have SD cards for special video modes to simplify it.
For NX500 full list of modes is
    4096_2160_24p
    3840_2160_30p
    2560_1440_30p
    1920_1080_120p
    1920_1080_60p
    1920_1080_30p
    1920_1080_24p
    1920_1080_15p
    1280_720_120p
    1280_720_60p
    1280_720_30p
    640_480_60p
    640_480_30p
For NX1, full list of modes is (yeah fractional ones too, don't know whether they are just for show or are there really differences between 24 and 23.98 when recorded)
    4096_2160_24p
    3840_2160_30p
    3840_2160_24p
    3840_2160_23_98p
    1920_1080_120p
    1920_1080_60p
    1920_1080_30p
    1920_1080_24p
    1920_1080_23_98p
    1920_1080_15p
    1280_720_60p
    1280_720_30p
    640_480_60p
    640_480_30p

I agree. Sounds like the new Sony may be an equivalent body, but I don't see anyone catching up in the $1k market any time soon. And even when they do, the NX will still have every feature it had when you bought it. Ridiculously capable camera. Wish there were less RS, but I'm learning to deal with that, just really watch yourself when handheld and get out the steadicam more (and hell, I shot some gigs with a D7000 years ago - great camera for jello commercials). (Though the color was lovely.) BTW, the NX1 with the 16-50 kit zoom? Amazing budget steadicam setup - OIS and useable AF - and who shoots Steadicam at 2.8 anyway? At 3.5 or 4, that lens is really attractive. Not as gorgeous as a classic, vintage wide prime - but you could stick 5 of the kit zooms on your rig and still be lighter than some classic 18-20mm glass. Get a 55mm step-up ring and get some cheap ND and maybe a diffusion filter (ever see how cheap quality 52mm filters are??) I just leave the step-up on mine and use a 52mm cap. get a rubber collapsible hood for when you need it. Really really dig it.

Agreed! The pocket was really something, especially when you picked it up in the summersale way back when it was 495 USD and there were rumors it was because they wanted to clear stock before the successor came out... and then none came! That's just insane power for the value. Of course, it's not without its shortcomings... but if your primary target is ending up with gorgeous footage... it sure delivers that!
I've been keeping my eye on the BMD Micro Cinema Camera as well, but unfortunately it's very BMD to have to wait for ages and we're not even sure if they pulled off the global shutter... maybe it's something they've said out to do as a goal and never quite reached it. The cameras they announce are more like predictions it seems... 'we think we'll be able to do this in due time, so just bear with us'. Well... NAB 2016 is just around the corner now... what's up B-M-to-da-Deeds!? Perhaps they did a complete redesign of the sensor and infrastructure, enabling finally both rolling and global shutter operation, the thing they were fighting with... as well as giving it a higher than FHD sensor now (2.5K/4K?). Maybe they'll even add a little screen, or a sweet accessory that will work together with the Video Assist like a charm, making it an ideal set-up... I've said it before, but oh how I would love to use it something like this:

which wouldn't be far off from shooting a caged GH4...

You're right, the footage out of these 1000 bucks Blackmagics are as well very organic looking. The Pocket wouldn't win the numbers game either, it is mirrorless, but doesn't really show all those crazy features we've come to expect from having had Panasonics, Sonys and even Samsung around. Again... maybe this is another testament that others out there are just trying too hard (perhaps even Blackmagic themselves with the URSA Mini?). Focusing on all the numbers and features, upping it with every release and here we have something that just basically has one standing out feature: rich meaty files with loads of embeded character. The benefit of the Pocket and the Micro is... they are great for the mirrorless shooters that now shoot GH3, GH4, G6, G7, GX7, E-M5II, NX1, A7S, A7SII & A7RII. A key benefit of me as Micro Four Thirds shooter is... I already have figured the mount out, so I have tons of native glass and ways to adapt other lenses as well! It's still small and light! And it doesn't break the bank! Maybe you shoot an interview that has to go online as soon as possible and you get things right in-camera and use on-board audio, well, it's great to use something like the GH4. Quick color adjustment here and there, 4K gives you some interesting editting options and bam! If you're a hybrid shooter, shoot some stills as well. But... for those times that you shoot moody stuff, where looks are a key factor and the image has to look, here I go again: filmic, dang, those ProRes or DNG RAW files will get you places!
It's a nice addition for a mirrorless shooter. Currently the typical combo would be GH4 and BMPCC. I can imagine in the next months that will turn to the A6300 and BMMCC. One for the thick moody stuff, the other for all other things including some sweet slowmo!
But first it needs to come out!
