jgharding reacted to Emanuel in Interesting interview - Ben Kingsley
I personally met him in Oporto along a film festival (Fantasporto) a couple of decades ago... lovely personality, polite, not vedette-diva type at all, human and attentive mate, my kudos to him. My personal perspective : ) Even though, I've heard the film festival organisation had (in 2004) some complaints on his hotel expenditures when he left... LOL :- )

jgharding reacted to herein2020 in DaVinci Studio - Dongle or Card
It will be great if they ever get the Fusion integration right. As it stands now its an endless source of frustration. I'm always waiting for things to cache and the performance is terrible, simple things like Fusion titles cause the whole program to stutter, anything changes above or below a Fusion comp and the caching starts all over again..etc. etc. I think by DR20 they will have it where it needs to be. The rest of the program is already fantastic.

It's a great bit of software. There's no need for a dongle any more, if you have two machines activated and try a third it just de-registers the others, so it's all automatic.
The "Cut" page makes no sense to me, and remember that Fusion is a distinct piece of software that they've bolted in, so it's more like learning After Effects than a bit of an NLE.
But yeah I recently tried Premiere again out of curiosity and the terrible stability etc meant i didn't last long in it.

I'll admit, I find the Cut page the most confusing thing imaginable, in fact I dislike it so much that I removed the tab from the UI. Even after watching their tutorials on it there was nothing I liked about it. I would love to be able to click the mouse a little less and resize the UI a little less, but the Cut page just doesn't click for me. I also do a lot of work with multicam sequences, Fusion compositions, motion tracking, lower thirds Fusion titles, etc. so even if I learned the Cut page I think I would end up in the Edit page at some point.
The Blackmagic Forum is a good place too, especially for Fusion questions. Hollywood grade VFX experts are actually hanging out on the Fusion forum and there's also more and more great YouTubers who post DR tutorials and they help a lot when I'm trying to figure out how to do something in Fusion.

jgharding got a reaction from PannySVHS in Has Anyone Switched From: DaVinci + DNG / BRAW, to, Final Cut Pro X, ARM Mac + ProRes RAW?
I considered it but once I got a PC with a Ryzen and an RTX3080 the idea became a bit silly.
I fear Apple's love of just dumping software and other things with no notice.

jgharding got a reaction from Juank in Is Panasonic Leaving The Camera Market?
Yeah I'm using the S1H and Nucleus Nano, the stills are amazing and the high-res photo mode is exceptional for still subjects, Vlog images are beautiful, and though Ninja V RAW is of limited use TBH it's still nice to have
I think the issue is... how many of us are there? For me this is the best image available outside of Red and Arri, but are there enough of us who want it to keep them making these cameras?

Once S1H gains momentum at filmschools, it will produce more and more impressive films. Today a friend of mine entered the realm of Varicam colour science and massive cinema image quality with the S1H. I was close to buy one myself, because I was going to sell my S1 due to the paid VLog update and the 10bit 4K60p of the S5. Tell you what, the VLog 10bit puts the S1 way ahead of a C300II image wise, no contest at all! If S5 will continues to sell well, and if Panasonic keeps their model philosophy in logic and neat order, they will grow and give Sony a good run for the money. My friend owns a GH5 and films with Arri at his school. If the S1H convinces him for his project, he is the usual film school image connoiseur, it will be on a whole lot of film school shoots. Film school in Germany means some free tickets for the large German film festivals as Berlinale and others. The S line I think will rock the scene. I hope I can be part of it.:)

I really wanted to like the S1 and even after getting the S5 I went back and looked at the S1 again especially since it has a full HDMI port and will soon be able to do internal 6K, not to mention it can still use the same XLR adapter I am using with the S5, the only things I don't like is the screen is not a full flip / tilt screen, besides the lenses and AF situation, and they charge for the VLOG "upgrade" which is why I never had it in the GH5. I use the S5 at odd angles and on a gimbal quite often so that tilt flip screen is pretty important to me.
I truly thought CLOG3 was as good as it gets, but working with VLOG out of the S5 is pretty incredible. The way I can push and pull the 10bit VLOG footage coming out of the S5 I thought was only possible with RAW footage. I always feel like I haven't exposed properly when the WFM says everything is still in range then I drop it into Resolve and a few clicks and it looks perfect.
That's my main concern....how many of us are out there? The cameras are great but if they are losing money on them how much longer will they keep making them? Everyone is predicting Nikon's fall, but it seems to me like Panasonic is the one in more trouble than Nikon.

When you do shows in the USA the crazy union racketeering is amazing too. Like charging you thousands of dollars to move a pallet of stuff 100ft, or $200 to hire a $20 chair for three days, or demanding that a union registered man stand next to you at a charge of $1000/hr if you want to film something (at one particular show).
It's a phenomenally corrupt business the trade show shebang. The people make it fun, everything else around it is s chore.

Alex with emotive color. He has a thread on here about his lut for the GH5.
https://www.emotivecolor.com/
Been a game changer for me in terms of color. So much nicer than the stock Panasonic 709. I've been limiting my camera choices to the ones he has luts for LOL. Aside from actually getting an Arri. Only one I could afford atm would be the Classic and its just too heavy and cumbersome for what I am used to. He does have a lut package for the A7s3, although the FX6 color is slightly different.

That electronic ND is the best though, really wish it was in every camera.

That thing could have run and run. It is a shame it was a one off.
Maybe we should organise our own!!
After the global plague that is.

Enjoyed that.
How many more of us on here were at that Converge conference ?
We should have a 10 year reunion next year.
Not that I actually spoke to any one at the first one obviously.

There's nothing with Arriraw per say, but it is pretty big files, which can be a problem for smaller productions. Redcode goes nice and small.

If the S1H would just output Braw i'd go and buy a blackmagic recorder...

jgharding got a reaction from Geoff CB in Image thickness / density - help me figure out what it is
I always think of it as related to compression TBH, AKA how much you can push colour around and have things still look good.
C100 with external recorder for example looked way better than internal, cos the colours didn't go all "thin" and insipid if you pushed it about,
Trying to white balance adjustments on over-compressed footage results in a sort of messy colour wash. I think of this as "thin", the opposite as "thick"

jgharding got a reaction from karin in Panasonic S5 Entry Level Full Frame seems to be real...
If this model retains at least a decent 10-bit 4K mode of some description, and vlog, well Canon could be a little sore after the R5 debacle 😅
https://www.l-rumors.com/confirmed-panasonic-will-soon-announce-the-new-s5-entry-level-full-frame-l-mount-camera
I do wonder what this means for a GH6, if there is still one in the works or if full-frame is pretty much the Pana roadmap now...
All the S5 needs really is to be a lighter, stabilised run and gun with their solid 150mbps 4k 10-bit and it'll sell a bunch.

Personally I'd rather DPAF than PDAF, I can't stand those weird lines you get at higher ISO on PDAF sensors
Yeah it's good peaking. I can't really focus pull that well on Ninja V due to the high HDMI delay. You need to rehearse pulls so live pulling i HAVE to do on the screen
