    Re moire:

This is 1080 50p. For most people this situation will arise infrequently. You're right that looking at the 4K version at 1:1 there was virtually none.

    Might be irrelevant, but:
    1) You have to make sure your stabilizer is set for the proper focal length.
    and
    2) The stabilizer is actually working. I have 2 gx85's. On one of them the stabilizer has actually got "stuck" a few times.
The description of your ibis performance does make it sound like it's not performing adequately; through user error or malfunction.
I'd also advise that your moire could well be a computer display issue rather than the actual footage. I just did a shoot with a lady in tight stripes. Morie looked pretty bad in the edit window, but when I watched the footage full-rez, it was fine.

First impressions, some good, some not so.  Not sure its the right fit for me.  Need to test low light and do more shooting generally
Nice hack but no good for me - I need to swap quickly from one to the other.
5 axis - I know it works in video   Just making sure that in the menu you need "E-stabilsazation (video)" to ON. (Because without that it seemed to do nothing.

Ok good to know especially as I just bought one :). Got a deal in Australia with 12-35 and 45-150 lenses and 25mm 1.7 thrown in for free. Expecting these lenses to be kit lens tastic, but may use when I need auto focus.

do you want a camera that's basically the d5500, just with some more video features and ease of use? willing to pay a bit to get it? or are you just looking at other affordable cameras that could compete with some differences and trade-offs?
I'm not sure what the options are with an external recorder or monitor on the d5500, that could be interesting, you'd need to research that, but I think it could be ideal for you
a c100ii looks like a really similar camera, with more features - and for more money of course. the image and files could still feel like home
the a6300's 60p might be comparable to the d5500.. has gotten badmouthed some, but the d5500 is lacking a little in detail, so might not be too much of a loss, if you're still good with the nikon. I'm also not sure of the status of the overheating now. might have improved some recently, but if not, that could be a bummer.

    Consider the Panasonic GX85.
It's far and away the best of the cheaper cameras in 2016.
I have the D5500 and the image is nice, closest to A7R II Super 35mm you can get if all you need is 1080p and want to put stuff on Vimeo. Only if you're pixel peeping the image will you find it different in terms of detail. The colours, codec and dynamic range are VERY similar looking. Yet the D5500 is much cheaper than an A7R II.
It doesn't have any moire or aliasing problems to any meaningful degree and is a very clean image.
However the GX85 just takes things to a whole new level for a similar price. In-body stabilisation, more flexible lens mount, Speed Booster, 4K, proper video shooting aids, EVF, the list goes on... You are getting a LOT more for your money with it.

I'd seriously consider the Panasonic G7 in 4K, plus GX80, and the Sony A6000 (& if budget can stretch... the a63000).
Or secondhand BMPCC  (but no 60p, and a new BMMCC with 60p costs quite a bit more).
Otherwise nope, I think there is not many other solid good alternatives.
Waiting a little while for the Panasonic G80 to be announced might be a smart move.

And the useless metadata entry, the clock time not staying set after a week, and general lack of reliability. The raw footage does look great and the dynamic range is great, but it's a scary camera to have on set for a paid interview shoot. Just too unreliable.

An year back i choose sony rx10ii for its s-log and slowmo. But after doing 2 documentaries and a short film the lens became wobbly and s-log is pain in the ass to get right colors. Sharpness forget about it. I am eagerly waiting for 1dc mk2 or gh5. 4k60p/good low light performance/motion cadency are my priorities.

cool thanks folks. No Liam its run and gun, I want to get as much usable stuff as possible. I did a shoot at an ice rink on the 5300 with a 70-200 lens trying to pull by eye and I got so little usable stuff.

I second using f/8 and a small sensor. But to answer your question, I recently bought an Aputure FineHD VS-2, and it is EXCELLENT for pulling focus. Nice and sharp, big enough to see, very effective peaking. If your rig can handle it, I think you'll enjoy the addition.

But not if you need 60p. That's my primary use, with an occasional need for 4K.
And I do remember tech reviews at DVInfo saying that the internal 60p HD on the A7s, internally downsampled from 4K, was some of the best they'd seen; it never occurred to me that the A6300 might be a step backwards, if indeed that's the case. (I wonder if an external recorder circumvents any of this?)
Of course, I don't want to read too much into that single sample, and am hoping to see more at 60p, though it looks like most reviewers are focusing on 4K or 120fps.

don't expect anything like that  from sony, they have a pro 4k camera segment to protect, the only companies that could have given us the best bang for our buck ( such as 4k raw on usb3) are companies that do not have higher priced 4k camera segment to upsell ( black magic in the begining tried but they now have a higher price range of camera to protect, samsung tried with nx serie but failed as they are getting out of the camera market). let's wait for the next new comer to flip the market upside down - the obvious thing that will change everything is an open firmware where third party developers can add features inside the camera, again samsung started that but they failed (http://www.imaging-resource.com/news/2013/05/28/redesign-your-own-camera-samsung-nx300-nx2000-source-code-released) - do you remember how expensive, crappy and limited where our digital phone services before the smartphone era with the app model, this is where we are now with the digital camera market.

Yeah, I'm a little bummed they're so eager on having a relatively thin camera profile. I don't find the E-M1 or GH4 too big for example. Or the NX1 or A7-series for that matter. If you want to go compact, the thing that really matters is the lenses. I mean, you could pick up a Panasonic GM1 and then adapt the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8, but if you want to shoot the Sigma, you might as well have gotten the G7, since a sizeable lens will dwarf any camera.
I like Nikon's D5300. You'll often find yourself struggling a little with Panasonic MFT, it just doesn't have the same lowlight performance and organic rendering as APS-C, not to mention 24MP is awesome to have for shooting stills. It's just a shame the D5300 isn't mirrorless. But basically the A5100/A6000 kinda share that same sensor. But I think when they rolled out, they were aiming for the average consumer, not expecting people would want to shoot a little more serious video with... so I wasn't really interested that much. Now though, the A7S has proven people do care about video and there's quite a market there. Then they upped it in the video department with the cameras I keep on mentioning: RX10M2, RX100IV, A7RII, A7SII. 4K. HFR. S-Log. And now have transferred that kind of tech to APS-C mirrorless! So... although mostly a MFT shooter, I wouldn't mind a piece of that APS-C mirrorless pie. And chances are... if you're shooting video with the GH4/BMPCC/D5300, you already have Nikon mount lenses that can easily be adapted to E-mount.
If you'd ask me to design the greatest camera to date with tech that's out now, it would probably have the Olympus E-M1 overall look and feel, with the grip, dual dials and everything; in-body stabilization too. Would probably have to be A7-series sized in order to fit all the things I want on it, haha. Then we can take something similar to the E-M5II vari-angle touchscreen and throw it on there. From the GH4 the WB/ISO/+/- buttons and battery life. Fujifilm XT-1 or Leica SL EVF. From Leica SL as well the OLED top LCD tech. Gotta have mic-in, headphone-out, fullsized HDMI port, dual memory slots. Sony's FS5 built-in electronic variable ND-solution and their E-mount. 20~24MP APS-C sensor. NX1's chip infrastructure for insane readouts and no overheating. Blackmagic internal ProRes/DNG RAW. Maybe a battery grip with some kind of mSata Speeddrive storage solution built-in when shooting 4.6K with it. You know, the good schtuff like that. (^^,)

Tokina 11-16 2.8, 11-20 f2.8 I've got both. You'd have to get an adapter of course. The pull click to manual focus thing sucks, and theres a bit of barrel distortion, but IMHO there's nothing else as fast as sharp.
Also the sony 10-18 get very good reviews and less barrel distortion.

Exactly! I've been saying the same for the last couple of months... oh how I wish they would just put some of the RX10M2, RX100M4, A7RII and A7SII tech in the next APS-C mirrorless camera. Just a good solid performing sensor, 4K capability, high framerates, etc. But like you I'm afraid that they'll pull a Canon and restrict the lower end segment. I mean, I would be perfectly fine having E-mount APS-C mirrorless. Fullframe, sure, it's nice, but I'm not heavily invested in fullframe covering lenses, nor do I have the wish to buy some because they tend to get bulky and expensive. Sony's answer obviously would be 'well, if you want the serious functionality, you just got to cough up the serious dosh. You can use the camera in S35 mode'. But I'm just not looking to throw money at something I'm not going to use to its full potential. Then just give me that APS-C camera already. If I still wish to get a fullframe look, I'll adapt lenses with a focal reducer (Sony: 'see, if we give you that APS-C camera you want, you'll then leave us for dead after. We need you to buy into the system, not just buy a camera').
I went with Micro Four Thirds because back in the day I more or less stood for the choice: GH2 or 550D/T2i. I went with the GH2, because it's mirrorless, I love liveview and to use an EVF. Articulated touchscreen is awesome to have! And a huge plus: small formfactor, especially when used with the 14mm and 20mm pancake primes. As well as the ability to adapt all sorts of lenses, really. That philosophy kind of continued with the E-M1, BMPCC, GH4 and Z E1.
I did have some Nikon glass (e.g. Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 II, Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8, Nikon 28-70mm f/2.8D & 80-200mm f/2.8D) because of the easier adaptation than Canon mount, so when I found out the D5300 with 18-55mm II was on sale for 449 EUR, I couldn't resist. Only added the 35mm f/1.8 on top of that, to have a nice alternative electronic native mount lens as well. Image quality wise, there's hardly any better value out there. It's pretty damn solid. For stills, Micro Four Thirds just isn't a match. For video, the D5300 has that more organic rendering and superb colors. Lowlight performance is decent as well. But again, you're so right, it might be one of the least user-friendly cameras out there. For stills, if you're used to liveview on mirrorless cameras, shooting in liveview on the D5300 is a horror, it just slaps the mirror around like it's applauding itself. I just don't see the benefit of having a mirror and OVF, except for the dedicated phase detection system for reliable AF, which I think is the only reason people still buy DSLRs (and perhaps their rugged touch and bulky ergonomics). Then there's weird behavour like don't being able to change aperture on the fly. C'mon Nikon... Anyways. I do feel the 24MP APS-C sensor is a nice place to be at. Enough resolution. Good performance, decent in lowlight. Overall a better idea than Micro Four Thirds.
The NX1 gave it a good shot and still is a nice camera, it showed that APS-C mirrorless is where it's at! But I still feel you would have to get the 16-50mm and 50-150mm S lenses and then it's getting pricey to the point I wonder what I'm doing spending so much money on a system without a future, when there's so many interesting alternatives out there... sure Sony has the A5100 and A6000, but they're really getting behind the curve now and don't think Sony ever expected people to be using it for shooting somewhat more serious video given the fact they only gave A6000 XAVCS with a firmware upgrade for example. But I think they've come around on that now... and they've been implementing cool video features in those 4 mentioned cameras (as well as higher end stuff). You'd just think there's almost no way around it not to implement any of those things... right? Unless again, they want to pull a Canon. Not sure. There's loads of rumors, but also, rumors have been going on for a year now and nothing happened. Personally I think 4K and in-body stabilization is quite a bit of a stretch, but if they can pull it off... power to them! Just hoping the EVF is any good and they'd give it a vari-angle touchscreen. That would make it competition for the E-M1/E-M5II and X-T1/X-Pro2 for sure. We'll just have to see how things will pan out. But the A6100 might just check off most of my wishes and might make me not buy a Micro Four Thirds camera again...

Which is why we should see them in an apsc camera first   But sony seems to hobble its apsc cameras, maybe to protect its full frame or super-35 cameras.  I had an a- 6000  for a while, it had a few nice things about it, but I ended up with the d5300 (the lease user friendly camera on the market??)
