Have you considered trying Prores RAW on the S1h? Now that I got the new Mac M1 I’m really considering it.

I left Mac computers 2 years ago and i am very satisfied with my PC.

But yeah the problem is premiere pro is such a shitty editing software when it comes to ProRes Raw. I've made some tests but it doesn't edit properly, the software crashes every 5 minutes, it's laggy, etc. I hate it so for now I won't touch prores raw again until it's fully usable in Premiere pro.

I have a powerful computer but premiere is a piece of shit for prores raw editing.

Next Pocket. Next Insta360. Next Mavic Pro.

I definitely feel you on the next pocket from Blackmagic. i sold my pocket 4K one year ago and took the Panasonic S1H and S5, and though they totally are excellent for my work (mainly interviews, mini dos etc.) i really miss the Braw and the filmic look of the pocket cams. i will definitely watch for the next iterations of these cameras. But one thing's for sure, I'll keep my Panasonic bodies, cause I am realy confident about the next iteration of the S bodies.
Also I keep an eye on the GH6 cause I feel it will be the last of its lineup so they might make it a little video monster.

Or maybe by then, we will have a FF PDAF Panasonic...

I don't think this will come at tall. But what may come in the next generation of S bodies is a very powerful chip fully dedicated on AF, because as some article have pointed out, the contrast detect AF is very powerful dependent. So with the increase of power the AF has improved recently. So one of the solution would be to dedicate an entire chip only to control the AF. The more power, the more accurate and fast this will be.

I feel a return to Fuji is on the cards...

Pair of XT4’s for video/filming + a pair of S5’s for stills has been a Plan B ‘just in case’.

I personally tested the S5 with the Panasonic 24-70 2.8 on a mini documentary wednesday, and I really noticed a boost in AF performance since the last update (2.0). I'm not the only one to have noticed it as I saw some similar comments on Facebook groups. I shot on that day maybe 60% AFC and 40% manually focusing. I was really impressed by the new reliability of the AF. Not on par with Sony or Canon, but reliable enough in some situations.

    Still waiting in France...

Received notification a week or so back it was on it’s way and then a few days ago, “due to incredible demand plus Covid plus blah blah blah, sorry, delayed”.

Still, it’s a 500’ish currency lens for free so can’t complain too hard.

Really? I received mine a month or so and I sold it right away. So strange that in the same country we have such a difference on delay.

    I love this lens.

It's not fast and so a bit limited in low light, but it works for me in a number of ways...

Yes i loved it too for a number of reasons but i hate non constant aperture lenses. And I always love to have a good ultra wide angle zoom lens (I always had one of these in every system I owned, be it Canon, Sony and now soon Panasonic). It will convert nicely into a 24-50mm when put in S35, wich is 90% of the focal lenghts I typically use. I think the 16-35 really suits my style and I love its size, a litlle bigger than the 20-60 but not by much.

Much as I like the S1 I may end up trading for an S5... Most of the work I shoot is on a gimbal and it is just a beast having to work with the S1 on a Weebill S. I think the lighter weight and smaller size of the S5 could help out there.

Best option I think. I still think with the firmware update due in 2021 for the S1 that it will outperform a bit the S5, but considering your requirements (size mainly) it should be a good option to have the S5. I personnally enjoy shooting with the S5 as it's so lightweight. But then when I grab my S1H again I'm feeling at home, I like the grip, the good size with the big lenses, etc. Each body has its purpose; and that's great to have this flexibility.

Just for the sake of some S5 talk... 😉

Pretty much finalised my set up for 2021 and going forward...and it isn't exactly as I originally intended...

I've dropped my requirement for hybrid use of a camera on the fly, ie, flicking back and forth between stills and video...and instead, having identical hybrid camera bodies, but they are going to be designated either; photo, filming, video or hybrid.

This means 4 bodies instead of 3. Aaaaaaaaaargh, more expense, but it's more important that I get real world usability for my specific needs.

So here's what and why. I reserve the right to change my mind further down the line if needs be, but for the moment:

S5 + Sigma 45mm f2.8 for 'medium-wide' stills. This is my version of a 35mm lens in that I prefer to work just a little more backed off so 45 gives me a tiny bit more reach and compression. My free 45 hasn't arrived yet and recently received a delay blah blah blah notification from Panasonic Europe, but hopefully will soon.

S5 + Sigma 105mm f2.8 as my portrait/tele lens for stills. It's a teeny weeny bit long for indoor use, but outdoors, will better suit my slightly more backed off approach instead of an 85mm, though I will lose the previous 135mm ability I had. I'll just have to crop.

S5 + Panasonic 24-70mm f2.8 as my filming (monopod) workhorse. Because I shoot 4k 50p for all my clips, this is effectively a 36-105mm which is perfect because it more or less matches my stills camera focal lengths above. I really wrestled over so many options or combinations in regard to this one but in the end it came down to the max flexibility of a 'one and done'.

S5 + Panasonic 20-60mm f3.5-5.6 for static (tripod) video but also as my wide angle stills lens/unit...which is convenient as the only time I need this function is when I'm not recording video, ie, this combo will be the only true hybrid use. But also not really because those times are different, though all on the same day.

Currently, I only have the one single body, the kit lens and the 45 on the way and it's enough to do the few commercial jobs I have booked, but delayed for this Winter, but the closer we get to next years wedding season...if it happens, I will start spending the cash.

It will still all fit my single backpack ethos, including 1x lightweight lightstand, light and audio gear, though I also will have my small/medium camera bag which carries all of the latter plus; batteries, powerbank, chargers etc.

But what about those lovely new f1.8 primes??!! The 85mm I have on pre-order. As much as I love them for size, weight, faster aperture etc, unless I go back to juggling lens changes all day, I can't make it work. I'll keep the pre-order for now and at least try the thing, but can't see a business case for keeping it.

Just for info/fun/out of lockdown boredom.

Yeah to keep the conversation rollin', I personnally sold the 20-60 + the brand new never used 45mm 1.8 from Sigma, to fund a 16-35 f4 S Pro lens. I will go shooting with the 16-35 f4 on the S5 and 24-70 f2.8 on the S1H. That my be the perfect run and gun combination (for stills and video).
If I need more light or shallower DOF I have my Samyang Cine Kit Lens kit (14mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm) but I would love to invest in the entire set of Panasonic 1.8 prime lenses to use the improved AF from the S5 that I find really good in good light for tracking faces and people in general.
And I'm waiting for an sequel of the Panasonic EVA1 to maybe add to my arsenal.

  9. Seriously I think the S5 would be the best option. Same mount, same sensor, same everything except for the batteries and the HDMI!
I have the S1H and I chose to buy the S5 for my B-cam/gimbal cam. It's way better to have same bodies, same menu systems, same sensor size, same (kind of) low light performance, same dual ISO, etc.  Of course that's my opinion.

Though, if they threw the S1H sensor into a BGH1-style box, added internal NDs and some mini XLRs, that would be pretty sweet as well.

I think that's what will come first in 2021, followed by the EVA-2.
Panasonic needs to release the successor of the EVA1 but also their high end cinema line (Varicam line) needs an update. Maybe a Varicam FF? So sad to let Sony, Red and Canon eating all the cake (Arri is in a world on its own).

Ok, let's talk about SEX for a moment here. And by sex, I of course mean lenses...

Are there any lenses that take advantage of the AF systems on the FX6 / FX9 or C70 that are either parfocal or at least have minimal focus breathing?

Because that's the great thing about the Panasonic lenses for the S series of cameras. For example, with my S1 I can go from an out of focus shot to... ummm... a more out of focus shot with minimal breathing.

Panasonic S lenses are extremely good in video, my 24-70 is parfocal and shows minimal breathing. Same for the 20-60. Incredible how they do everything right, but people are so caught up into the perfect AF quest that they don't see everything else Panasonic offers for video. I mean, they give the best out there for professional video into mirrorless bodies (not talking about real cine cameras). But people don't see that. I mean it's not as if loads of wonderful films and videos were made without AF.

Agreed. Although it is good to note that IF you need the blacks lifted so much, it won't be chock-a-block full of noise.

Agreed! For whatever this video was supposed to be (I know it was a commercial for Panasonic), it was kind of weird choice in music.

As much as Panasonic lenses seem to be great for filming, they do seem like they need some sort of softening filter on them. Maybe it's the lack of the OLPF as you suggest but I just think they are a bit too sharp for my tastes.

They're sharp indeed. I have 3 native lenses : the 24-70 f2.8, the 20-60 and the Sigma 45mm f1.8. They are really sharp but not too sharp. The sigmas are known to be very sharp and that's why he used in this video. I shot a little piece of documentary 2 weeks ago with the S1h + 24-70 f2.8 and it's not that sharp, I mean detailed but the image is pleasing.

I dont like the high shutterspeed + looks oversharp to me + due to the lowlight a lot of the footage looks weird/mushy(maybe could be solved by crushing the shadows/blacks a bit more).

yup the oversharpness bothers me a bit too. It is maybe due to the fact that it lacks an OLPF filter as the one in the S1H. I notice that difference between my S5 and my S1H, the S5 seems more like a traditional mirrorless or DSLR camera, quite the opposite for the S1H which seems more natural/filmic.

I posted 'Soul of Tokyo' more as an example of a filmmakers 'review' as in he actually went out and shot a shit ton of material and made a film with it. And not just shot it, but scripted it first so there was intent with most if not all of it.

Compared with 99 other YouTube reviews which are basically; un-box in purple/blue back-lit room wearing a baseball cap backwards because that's what someone with the initials P.M. does. Or used to do. Quote specs. Go outside and wave it about without even trying to fine-tune any settings. Say the AF is shit (because you have to by international law), then put it back in the box and return to sender before making your next bit of 'content'.

Actually the "Soul of Tokyo" video seems to be a paid Panasonic job cause it's been posted on their channel. I didn't really like this video to be honest (colors are a bit weird at times to me, to much gimmicky shots, etc) but I really feel you about the Youtubers community that just want to be like PMcKinnon, I'm really sick of them (there are a few exceptions though as I'm specifically talking about the PMcKinnon copycats).

  15. I'm still thinking about maybe switching to Sony or Canon for better AF in video cause I am often shooting as a one man band, and AF would be very appreciated. But I can't help thinking that my Panasonic S1H and even my newest S5 after the future firmware has still the edge in video besides AF and slow motion
    - much better color science
    - much better IBIS
    - better video tools (waveform, vectorscope, shutter angle, etc)
    - a unique LCD implementation (tilt and swivel)
    - 6K (though I don't really use it that much but still)
    - very useful S35 crop mode in 4k and even pixel pixel in 1080p
    - no overheating whatsoever
    - better tactile implementation (Sony improved it a lot but still not the same quality as Panasonic and Canon)
    - 4k DCI
    - better ergonomics (arguably Panasonic has the best ergonomics of all the hybrid full frame cameras, and I say this as a former A7III and Canon EOS R owner)
    - Possibility to choose linear focusing and even the length throw with native lenses from Panasonic and Sigma recently wich is not possible on Sony lenses
    - better hybrid usability if you need to shoot stills and video
    - Timecode
    - Real anamorphic recording modes
    - ProRes RAW up to 5.9K (up to 4k in the Sony)
    - Etc.

So yeah I'd be glad to have a better AF, but truly giving up all those things I listed before, it feels like I would downgrade in some ways.
@andrewreid what do you think of the comparison. As of now, what would you choose between those two?

  16. So I don't know if this has been posted yet in this thread but here are some files from the C70 to play with :
    https://www.dropbox.com/sh/5wrkdi1w5flb94w/AADlSb_ODzKnOO7f2gBTJ_9Ma?dl=0

I don't know for you but I hear people complain about the difficult Canon codecs and files to edit compared to say those of the Sony A7sIII but I have no problem editing in real time those files on my computer.
Speaking about IQ, it's quite good, the amount of noise in the shadows is minimal, it's a pleasure to grade those files.

I pre-ordered the day after announcement day lol, Jessops just keep telling me they never got stock

So strange the differences between areas in the world. i ordered on september 7th, and received it less than é weeks after that. I don't understand how Panasonic can't supply at least a small quantity in USA or other countries. This camera seems to sell very well compared to other full frame cameras from Panasonic (except the S1H that sells more than they thought).
