Hello I've got an S5 and really enjoying it, now  I wanted to get a second camera to compliment it as a second angle for interviews and longer focal range for documentary and sports work. I was looking into the  g9 with Panasonic 50-200 used or Panasonic hc x2000 camcorder with its crazy zoom. However with Covid cases going up again I don't want to spend that money right now I just want a second camera angle for now but as cheap as possible and easy to match with the s5. Currently I'm leaving towards a used g9 with a cheap lens as I can add to it when things pick up

Best option would be a second Panasonic S5 but if you don't have the budget yeah the g9 is a good option. Only thing that bothers me is having two different lens mounts, except if you plan on exclusively use EF lenses for example and use EF adapters on each cameras (a speedbooster on the g9 and the regular Sigma MC-21 on the S5).

  2. I made some simple and informal tests today with my little 5 year old kid running and monkeying around, and I was pleasantly surprised by the S5. Nowhere near my S1h, very different, in a positive way. The AF box sticks to people and faces waaaaaaaay better, and the pulsing didn't showed its ugly face in all the footage I shot today. I was very impressed and it seemed to me like night and day compared to the S1H or the GX80 that I own !
Of course, I really need to make some other tests but for now in video i'm really impressed, for personal and family things, I would definitely use AFC. For professional work and paid gigs, I need to do more tests.
    I was shooting 4K UHD 25p 10bit.

    Kaboom, it's arrived!

Sorry, no YouTube unboxing video or reading of spec list, just an initial impression whilst the battery is charging.

I've come from 8-9 years of Fuji as my main cameras with some dabbling in 1" Sony and M4/3 Panasonic but have otherwise never owned a full frame mirrorless before.

I had Nikon DSLR prior to Fuji for stills with a D7000 for filming...but things have moved on since 2010!

First of all, it feels superb in the hand. In terms of size for handling and my use, just about perfect.

Weight, perfect and I currently have the 20-60mm 'kit' lens attached I bought it with which will become my personal travel lens and my stills work wide angle.

Build quality. Well all my old gear has now been sold but I'd say it's all a step up from Fuji and I had no complaints about that, but the build and finish are superb and the way the dials click and operate etc.

Next up, some stills and video tests to get a feel for how it all works etc and that all important AF test..., but so far, it's all looking good!

Same for me it has arrived today. Tomorrow i'll make some tests to see what this little beast can output but so far first impressions are extremely good. Seems as well built as my S1H.

Very comfortable in hand and so happy about the weight and size. I'ts going to be my daily camera, as well as my b-cam for shoots.

I have a shooting on Wednesday (a small narrative web ad for an app) that I planned to shoot on one camera but I'm tempted to throw the S5 on set to take some additional coverage... Just to see how well it matches with its big brother.

I've used the RX1RII a lot, and this seems like a decent alternative. I would still prefer the RX1RII over this for light weight photography, but at least it has a lot of quality of life improvements such as MUCH better battery life, IBIS and 4k.

Had the RX1 RII and yes it is much more exciting than this one (for photography, as it's another kind of camera). I really don't get how could we get excited by this Sony A7c at this price point. Cause to me the real problem is the price. If it were sold at 1500$ max that would be ok. But not at this insane price.

This is actually a couple of hundred dollars cheaper than an S5.

Here in France it is the same price (even 100 euros more for the body + kit lens), which i find insane for a 2 years old tech.

420 8bit, old style menu system, WTF are they thinking to charge $2000 on it?

People are sheeps. they're gonna sell a bunch load of it, based on Youtube vloggers recommendation until next "big" thing. When you see what the Panasonic S5 offers for the same money, why on earth people would choose this werid thing... New concept camera? Meh !

  7. I really don't understand Sony at all. If these pictures posted on sonyalpharumors ( https://www.sonyalpharumors.com/new-sony-a7c-real-world-images/) are reliable and authentic , look at the menu system... Why do they go back to their previous type of menu, the one that everybody complained about? they made a smart move changing it completely with the release pf the A7SIII, so everybody was thinking they'll bring this menu on every new A7 body... But no of course. Is Sony the new Canon? As we say in french, take one step forward and two steps backwards....

Big sensor, small body - has always marketed well to photographers....

Of course but not this one. Really I don't get it, ergonomically shitty, nothing improved from the A7III and pricey for what it offers.
I had some other small cameras with big sensors (Sony RX-1RII, Fuji X100F and Leica Q for example) and I could really  understand why those appeal to photographers.
butseriously this A7c is kind of a joke, no personnality at all, ergonomics seems nothing but bad, good sensor but nothing to write home about.... Very dull in my book.

Seems like the most unnecessary camera release ever!

A7 III is just fine at affordable full frame prices.

And they want $2K for this ugly monstrosity?!

Wouldn't A7000 make more sense for the name as well.

Exactly my thoughts. I can't understand the appeal for this camera.

Talking seriously - as in the A6xxx line, no front dial AGAIN, Sony?

9 hours ago, Geoff CB said:

Lack of front dial is a mistake. Especially at the rumored price.

That's what I don't understand with Sony (and sometimes Canon). Why on hell do they make choices like this? I mean, it's obviously an ergonomic disater design choice ! How could at least one guy involved in the decision about design approve this kind of thing?
Even Panasonic on their GX80/85 put a front dial, a rear dial without sacrificing the exposure comp dial (wich in modern cameras like this is a waste of space in my opinion, except for some Fuji or Leica wich have all the ergonomics of vintage cameras) with the very same form factor but at a much lower price and target audience !
    That's insane to me !

The only issue I have with this built in ND filter is outdoors, great, but in low light...

Well it would require a second adaptor with no ND for indoor/low light.

But otherwise, a very interesting option and I'm at least considering it...

That's my workflow. i'm using the Sigma adapter for low light interiors if needed. And even with the fotodiox, no problem when cranking up the iso to 4000 (the second native ISO of the S1H and S5) if I am in the rush.

Well I have done an about turn which went from initially being interested in the S5 to less interested to moving to it as my primary stills and filming workhorse.

In 20 years, I have only made one brand switch and that was 9 years ago from Nikon to Fuji.

Now it's Fuji to Panasonic (S5) + Sigma (FP) and all being well, a pair of S5's.

There's enough there to convince me it will suit my specific needs and do 'more' than my current Fuji system can do.

Pre-ordered the S5 (just one to start with to make sure with my own tests it suits my needs) with the 20-60mm 'kit' lens for initial testing before relegating that lens to wide angle duties, plus the bonus of a free Sigma 45mm f2.8 which will be going on a used FP when I have the funds in a month or so to buy one.

'Holy Grail' camera? Nah... Canon R5 without heating issues and maybe even R6 are 'better' as is the Sony A7S3 and undoubtedly the A74 whenever that pops up. And maybe even the Nikon Z6S, but all things considered (and there are many things unique to each of us), I think both this camera and the entire 'L' system are going to suit my needs very well for the next few years.

I think you'll be served very well with the L mount system. Bodies are really good, there are lenses coming, photo and especially video features are excellent, no compromises here except for continuous AF on video but the S5 seems to have improved this area a lot, and in a few firmwares this shoyld be really reliable. I think you made a really good choice.

    Hi,

Where did you buy the Fotodiox EF-L VND, in Europe where?

    Color cast is OK?

your opinions are apreciatted here, many dubts at the beggininig

I bought it straight from the Fotodiox website, it was the last item in stock at the time I bought it. I did'nt see any color cast but I didn't go to the max maybe I will need to make other tests. But I don't think there will be as much color cast as with some circular NDs i have. In my very quick test I didn't see any.
I will put it mor to the test in the few weeks coming. For now I'm really happy as it will come really handy and will speed up my shooting time when outside on a low profile.

Now an L-Mount, full-frame EVA-2 needs to come very soon.

    Waiting for this.

I saw an EVA1 on mpb.com being sold for 3600€ with only 70 hours of running time! I was about to buy it but decided to wait a bit, as I needed more a little b-cam to my S1H than a bigger cam. But as my video business is going up, I may have needs for a bigger cam later so I don't have to rent anymore, so an EVA-2 would be very interesting.
