Still waiting for my perfect camera for short docs and run&gun (reports):

    Canon R6: overheating

Panasonic S1H: bad autofocus (same with GH5S)

BMPCC 4k/6k: bad autofocus, no IBIS

Fuji X-T4: overheat, no video lens (AF)

Sony A7 III: Do I really want to buy this one in 2020? (no 4k 60fps, no face detection in 4k, I'm not a slog fan)

Sony A7SIII should serve you well as far as latest rumors are correct. It has S-Cinetone curve that should help you if you don't like S-Log.

Maybe you are right but it seems optimistic. I want a workhorse not a show pony. I sold my S1 to get something with AF and no-crop 4k60p but that camera was beautifully bulletproof. It just got out of my way and I didn't ever have to worry about it

I feel the same way. I use my S1H daily for professional use and I never worry about overheating or weather conditions, it's that reliabel. i shoot mainly corporate and interview that sometimes go over 35mn per take and I've never ever had any annoyance with it. The only drawback to me is the AF for video, I'd love to have good continuous AF in some situations. And I really am looking closely to the new Canon bodies as well as the Sony A7SIII, but for now, from what I see from the Canon cameras, I think I would regret to switch from my S1H. It I get the good AF I want but end up with overheating problems or unreliability in general, that won't work for me.
For now , until more tests come our way, I think I may keep the S1H or switch back to Sony if the A7SIII is as good as it seems .

So you kind of regret selling your S1?

Here we have some much higher quality and more useful information from Gerald.

The external recorder situation is as follows:

Let's give guys like this their due and not reward the wannabe filmmakers.

I love how precise and technical this guy is. He tells the truth, after conducting good tests, and ends up with some numbers that speaks to us.

the full HDMI port is a god bless 👌

So true ! As rumors come by, it's really kind of shaping up the perfect camera for me. I am a bit affraid about the lack of IBIS but we'll see. Good AF, S-Cinetone, 422 10bit, 4K120, ProRes RAW with my Ninja V, no overheating, man that's insane ! Exactly what I wanted. the two compromises are maybe the low pixl count and lack of / bad IBIS.

Actually according to Canon, the R6 does have a time limit in 4K30p and hence overheats. Only R5 has a "not limited by heat" 4K30p mode:

    canon-temps-enregistrement-video-1-940x4

We know nothing of the temperature or length Behiri was shooting at so maybe nothing too surprising considering the above chart.

He said it was about 29°C approximately. But the most annoying thing is that he told even in 1080p he couldn't shoot most f the time and he had no info on when he could shoot again once it sopped recording. To me it's alarming. I can't tell my clients to wait a few minutes or even 10 minutes before shooting again because my tool is not reliable.
We'll see, cause maybe he had a faulty camera, but to me it seems to be dead on arrival (for professional filmmaking).

Guys he said he shot in 4k24p. Funny enough the R6 should not overheat in 4k30p and below according to Canon. That's very very scary ! i can't imagine the R5 with the extreme 8k and 4k120p modes. I will wait for the A7sIII to come out before deciding if I keep my S1H or if I make the jump back to Sony, but honestly Canon is now out of my list.

The R5 is bigger than the R already so I'm not sure they could have maintained a size similar to the R with the addition of ibis and a fan.  Guess you'd have to bite off the direction of Sigma's fp. Kudos to Sigma for that.

I think we should see it the other way. The S1H is bulky compared to the R5, but it'not that big compared to a Panasonic S1. Panasonic went for this big bodies design straight from the beginning with their S line. i think what the Panasonic rep said was that it would'nt have add a lot more bulk compared to what the actual size of the R5 is.
And yes when you see the tiny Sigma FP, you see that built-in cooling system is very possible.

From the new rumors seems that 4k 120fps is missing... so it seems (by the random rumors) that at 4k 60 fps it will have slight crop....

They didn't say it's missing. What they say is : "4K RAW output yes, but not sure if it supports 4K 120fps RAW outputand "Also, ONLY Up to 4k60 will be 10bit 4:2:2 internal" (source : Sonyalpharumors)

So maybe 4K120p is there, but not possible to output it as a RAW signal via HDMI, and also maybe it's 8bit or 10bit 4:2:0?

  9. He also told in the 2 hours long video posted yesterday besides this one that the new firmware with clog 3 and other improvements should be out ib September.

He was a Sony ambassador and left them to be a Canon ambassador a few weeks ago.

Thats understandable but from a FF camera, thats the worst I've seen. It feels like it was shot on a different camera.

I saw the 2 hours long live video he made to present the Canon eos R5 (french only) and he told people who were asking him about the DR that he graded the footage extremely contrasty, because he likes it this way with big crushed blacks and the waveform scope completely extended so a lot of the information is gone. I personally don't like this grading and it may be worse after the youtube compression but he told that the DR is there and that there is info in the highlights as well as the shadows before he did his extreme grading.

Some great looking footage here. Not going to lie, this looks just as good as my Canon C200 videos. Colors looks amazing, dynamic range looks better than I thought it would, and its all shot handheld:

Nice to see that some of the footage are available to download to play with. I thought people testing out the R5 weren't allowed to post footage... Anyway I'm gonna test it out right now !

Announced by the end of summer is what the Sony exec stated..

It seems more in late July, it seems. In 2 weeks from now we should be set.

Sounds like a much better option than EOS R5.

Exactly my thought. For video use, it is far more interesting than eos R5 and eos R6. I personally wait for this announcement and to know if I keep my S1H or go back to Sony now that they care about pro videographers (8 bit codec even in HDMI output, come on Sony !).

The only one you can do anything about is learn how to focus, then you can buy the S1H 😀

    Sorry bad joke...

Not so much a joke... After I left canon for Sony a few years back, and getting tired of waiting for the 10bit 422 at least from an external recorder, i switched back to an EOS R, so I experienced Sony and Canon autofocus. Now I own an S1H and it feels like going back to the good old 5d MkII days where you had no choise of getting the focus manually. I was a bit scared to going back to ONLY manual focus, and frankly it's not that bad. it comes back naturally if you've been used to do it manually in the dslr days, and now I don't complain about it so much.
Sometimes on a few occasions on a shoot with clients I may miss the focus a bit, and I need to do another take, but it is way less problematic than I thought.
What strikes me with the S1h is the quality of the footage, the ergonomics, the unlimited recording with no overheating (I even never heard the fan start !), all the options etc. The drawbacks are lack of affordable native lens selection (but except for my 24-70 S Pro sometimes, I only shoot video with a 5 lenses Samyang cinema kit), and the continuous AF where it would have been of practical use sometimes).
Not to say I'm not waiting for the Sony a7SIII announcement to make a definitive choice (because you have a very good choice of lenses AND a very good autofocus), but for now the Canon EOS R5 leaves me a bit cold. Happy with what my S1H produces.

I don't get why people dare to complain on heating. Obiously Canon does not chose to heat their camera, it's pure physic limitation (unlike the fact they chose not to include IPB). Want a FAN ? HELL NO!!! I want my camera weatherproofed. If you want a fan and a camera to record 3 hours interview do not get a R5, what a joke. Why would you even use it for that?? There are plenty of other cameras better suited for that kind of job.

The S1H (that I personnally own) is weatherproofed and has a fan so it doesn't overheat. So Canon could have made this, but chose not to.
And frankly even with this overheating "issue", I'm very interested in this camera, for 2 reasons : AF in video, and lens selection available (all RF + all EF lenses). 2 main problems with the Panasonic full frame cameras.

Canon and Sony have practically ignored us for 5 years and now suddenly they want our money again.

Bear this in mind when you see all the stage-managed YouTube hype next month about 8K and RAW.

Exactly my thought. I waited so long for these two companies to give us some professionnal features like Panasonic or even Fuji gave us (4k60p and 10bit 422 for example), so long that I ended up buying an S1H and 24-70 f2.8 for an incredible bargain price and I don't have any regret. Sure, i'll keep an eye on those products when they will be released, but I am so happy with what Panasonic has made. I already had GH1, GH2, GH3 and GX80, it's like coming home again after a Canon/Sony adventure ! I left Panasonic cause I wanted the full frame look, now they gave us exactly that, plus all their usual features for video.
Let's wait and see, consumer will always be the clear winner in the end !
