How does that compare with your results, @Trankilstef? I heard you got smooth playback somehow. Do you know if it was using hardware decoding, and if so, on your cpu or gpu?

I have my gpu processing mode turned auto, hardware decoding on my GPU. Strange thing is I don't find anywhere the settings to turn QuickSync on or off. My processor support it but I don't find the setting.

  2. I can't help myself being so impatient about this camera and especially the first feedback from people that will it. I really think that all those times I was waiting for this perfect camera (for me at least) are about to end. I mean, look at the specs, even if there are some caveats (for sure), maybe no DPAF in 8k, or 2x crop in 4K120p, or 4k60 FF without AF but 1.3x crop with it as in the 1dxMkIII, etc. We have to step back a bit and see the entire scene, this is freaking good ! No camera is perfect but this one will be very very close !
Evreything we love about Canon (great colors, great lens choice, C-Log easy to grade, etc.) with all the improvements that Canon will offer on it (IBIS, 8k, 4k FF), I just can't wait. I was about to buy an S1H but was reluctant because of the AF, and I waited. Glad I did !

  3. I must admit I'm kind of disappointed. Fuji had all the lights full green to create the perfect little pocket rocket video camera. They could have gone as far as it is technologically feasible and as far as their budget allowed, cause they don't have any camera division sales to protect. We were all hoping 6k, more pronounced grip, a flip screen a la S1H/xt100, etc.
I am pretty sure it will be a wonderful camera, but they basically only added  IBIS, new film simulation and flip screen... Wich is quite nice but they could have made something really better than that. At least, everything indicates that what I hope will come, and it will be named XH2...

To my knowledge only the 1DX2 & 5D4 had a stills extract from video feature and both those cams used MJPEG.

The thought alone of that codec returning gives me the shivers and it would be plain silly for Canon to place such an inefficient codec for such high resolution video files. But who knows.. when Canon introduced 4K on the 1DC it did have that one caveat!

The EOS R also has this feature with every video you shoot with it. You have the possibility in playback mode to extract all the frames you want from it.
    So no worry 😉

If these are the actual specs, it's really a little S1h(even better I'd say). Good codecs, good resolutions and framerates, let's see how good is IBIS and ergonomics but for now it's really exciting.

Thanks, this will be a pocket video monster !! I don't know how you have access to all those informations but anyway, thanks !

It'll feature a refined and enhanced version of the same 26MP IMX571 sensor:

Refined and enhanced so it can shoot 6k60p? Cause this sensor only can do 6k30p... Well, we'll see. This camera interests me more and more.

It’s supposed to be announced next week, still no reliable leaks.

I don’t really know what to expect.
From the current EOS R, I’d like Nocrop 4k up to 60p, 10bit 422internal, 1080p120, IBIS, and dual slot. Of course, Dual pixel in every mode. Less that 2500€ and released in april.

It’s not that much, and it will hurt Sony who gave us nothing interesting for two years,

Come on Canon, you can do it 😁

Not the R6, but the R5 should be announced next week. The R6 is rumored to be announced in May.

Here’s guessing that the body will be the size of a 5D, because:

    1. Those huge RF lenses could do with a beefy body for better balance

    2. Those huge video specs probably need more room for heat dispersion

    3. According to their financial report, they really need to hit the nail on the head for this lower volume higher margin cam, and correct me if i am wrong but the 5D series is their best selling in this category, so creating a workhorse around that format would be smart and maybe let the R and RP series fight it out with the “prosumer” FX competition.

After using the S1 for some time and getting reminded why the “big” SLR style reigned supreme for so long, i would hugely appreciate a “mirrorless 5D” to go with those incredibly innovative RF lenses.

    What do you guys think?

I completely agree ! The size of the RF lenses is quite on the larger size, so a bigger body would be beneficial.

For you guys i hope that canon really do lift their game, as for me i have the bmd p4k its enough for me maybe further down the track i may look at another still camera, maybe not.

I just sold my Pocket4K 2 weeks ago. It's a lovely camera but for the work I do I need some good autofocus sometimes and I just felt something big would come from canon. I already have a Canon EOS R that I use for my pro gigs, but I felt they would give us what I wanted : 4k60p, 10bits 422 and eventually IBIS. I'm already sold on the C-Log that is easy to grade.
But I really didn't want to sell my Pocket 4k, the image out of this is so good, the Braw is definitely something I will miss.

Why no one has quoted your post ?
I find it interesting, and make me believe that Canon will, finally, play the true mirrorless game.

So now we have to wait a few weeks to see what Sony and Canon have in their vault.

I don't know why people didn't reacted on my post, not a big deal, the important thing is really how Canon is confident and how excited they are about their new products. I've never seen it (from them) before.

I’m really interested to see where the actual specs land.

If it offers 4K/60p no crop and pixel binned then that’s good enough for me.

4K120p with a heavy crop and no AF is fine with me.

    Oversampled 4K24/30p would be amazing.

Dual pixel in every mode up to 60p would be killer as well as roughly 13.5 stops DR to compete with S1H.

This would be my dream camera (all you say) !!

Yelp, they are aligning for the end user to be butt r$$#@%ped.  Remember how expensive their original cinema dslr were?  I think it was like $10k or something.  I would assume the r5 is going to be pretty expensive if they specs are real.

Don’t be silly now. Those days are long over. The competition is fierce, the market has shrunk and Canon are acknowledging both in their financial report.

The specs aren’t that crazy either. We know nothing yet about crop factor, codec bit depth or if RAW is there.

My guess is it will have slightly inferior specs to 1DX3.

    Id say expect S1H pricing on the R5 ($4000-4500) & S1 pricing on the R6 ($2500).

I agree, they seem very aware of the current market, and plan to act accordingly. Going too high on price would just shoot them in the foot just like a crazy crop factor would at this point, competition wise.

I think 3599 to 3999 body only would be my guess. ( maybe a little more ) but they know these new bodies will drive the purchase of their new RF lenses further which is a win win for them.

Yep it should be just a tad aver the S1H price for me. According to canonrumorsguy it should'nt be that pricey.

I would like to see in rumours such a thing like internal ND filter, ability to record internally into ProRes  RAW and BRAW, global shutter ( or minimal rolling shutter).

Ok here's what you want (don't know about the internal ND yet) 😉

    RED KOMODO known specs :

Sensor: S35, 6K Resolution, Made by RED
Sensor Read out (shutter): Global AND Rolling
    Format Size = 27.03x14.25mm (30.56mm image circle)
    Format Resolution = 6144x3240 (19.91 megapixels)
    Format Aspect Ratio = 1.90:1
Max Frame Rate @ Full Res: 40fps @ 6K FF
    Autofocus: Yes (Phase Detect)
    Weight: ~2lbs
    Size: 4” Cubed
    Lens Mount: RF Mount (fixed)
    Battery: Dual Canon BP-9
    Media: CFast 2.0
    DC Connector: Lemo
SDI: Yes 4K SDI OUT (x1)
    HDMI: No
    USB-C: No
Audio: Yes, 3.5mm audio in/out (maybe scratch mic as well?)
Built in Monitor: Yes (touchscreen ~3”x3”)
Additional connection: Yes, gold pins on top for cordless monitors/ cellphone cradle, + EXT Port
Screw Holes: Yes, at least (6?) 1/4"-20 UNC threads (standard) looks like additional m3 and m4 threads as well
    Power on: hard stop switch
Additional buttons: Yes, Back, Lock, up, down, play
Wifi: Yes, Antenna on left side
Cellphone integration: Yes, IOS and Android
Additional accessories: Yes RED and GDU accessories coming on release, presumably every major accessory manufacturer will as well

Joke aside, I really think that the EF-RF variable ND adapter can be considered internal ND if you still use EF lenses for now (as i do). It's very convenient and high quality, and works really well.

  15. And for people still unconvinced this is actually happening, this is what CanonRumorsGuy posted on Twitter :

Dream on. With the rumored specs: $4000+

    that‘s my bet.

Yep. I'd even go as far as 4500+, because the S1H is 4000, so looking zt the specs, no way Canon would price it under 4000$! I'd love to but i don't think they'll do it. At least if it's way too expensive there is the rumored R6, wich is basically just what i was waiting for from Canon (4k60p, no crop, etc).

I am glad I ditched Sony and go back to Canon last year, all I need now is the tasty new body 😎

But man those new R5/R6 definitely make my R look like dinosaur for sure, but R still producing pleasing image with minimum tweaking.

Now just need Tamron to port their lens to RF and that will be perfect.. not all of us need big expensive lens.

My interest for Red Komodo 6K drop to 0%

Exactly the same I did ! Ditched Sony last year tired of trying to grade Slog on an 8 bits codec... Even C-Log in 8 bits is way better and more solid thant S-Log in sony mirrorless. I came back to canon and I really knew they would commit fully on mirrorless bodies.
Tamron, Sigma and Samyang/Ronkinon will port their lenses, it's just a matter of time...

    Good times...

  18. Ok just to add my two cents. As I said in another thread I talked to a Canon rep on tuesday and he told me that on the video side the announcement that will come in February (he told me specifically before March)  will have me happier than ever. I was telling him that I loved the EOS R on the stills part but on the video though it is better than advertised all across the internet, it lacks some really important things. And he smiled, really confidently, and told me to not worry at all, to just wait for the next announcement.
Then today I spoke with a Canon Ambassador, over 30mn on the phone. We talked about her next projects etc and I couldn't help myself to ask for advice, i know she's one of the early professional adopters of the EOS R, and I told her I wanted to buy a second body, I was waiting for the next iteration of the R line, but was hesitant to not buy right now a second EOS R. She just told me this : "you better wait! I signed a NDA so I can't tell nothing but you really better wait. Something big is coming" She insisted on the "Big"... I speak to some Canon reps or this ambassador from time to time and got some insights sometime. But never, never I saw them this confident about a coming product.
So yes, something really big is coming, and I think it will be a game changer.
