While I certainly wish them success, and while LIDAR is proven technology (that even my smartphone has), the reason why this isn't used by major camera makers is probably because of its open loop nature and the calibration required, much like you have to keep both the lens and the camera in calibration for a classic rangefinder. If we had so many accuracy issues with still photography with DSLRs why would we expect any non-TTL, non-sensor based, open-looped technology to not suffer from the same.

XL was designed for GH4. Many users already had the XL and they bought the GH5, so you see the XL used more often. While XL accomplished its original mission and still did great with full frame lenses, GH5 had bigger coverage to begin with, having no 4k crop at all, and on top of that you need to give a little headroom for the IBIS to operate. You don't want an entire stripe of black to come up every now and then when you handhold (with XL and APS-C lens). If you don't want IBIS why didn't we stick with GH4? Everyone seems to be using the Sigma 18-35/1.8 and on GH5 an ULTRA is required. Of course XL if you use only full frame lenses.

Full ACK. BUT Canon can afford it - because Canon is by far market leader, is very profitable (even with their camera division) and Canon still owns the strongest "photography brand"...I don't know, if Nikon can afford the same illness - Nikon-itis.
I don't believe that in the next five years all current manufacturers will survive...Not because of going bankrupt, but because of leaving the digital camera market because of continuous losts. Look, Samsung could afford the camera business, Samsung is an unbelievable big and profitable company. But they know about smartphones killing the digital camera mass market and they don't want to permanently loose money just for beeing "innovative". For a company even extremely innovative is not enough - you have to generate profit (either selling lower costs products in a mass market or very expensive products in a niche market), not innovative features and highest end devices for a micro-niche enthusiasts market looking for kind of cheap 16k 4.4.4 cameras... 

This has more to do with the fact that image stabilization with Panasonic is an all-or-nothing affair. The user has no provision to choose between IBIS and OIS, it is IS ON or IS OFF and the camera figures out how to accomplish IS with whatever means. Your camera's user manual explains which IS is used in under which scenario.

The real GH5 support is imminent but this workaround with the existing firmware is actually the OIS+ES mode of image stabilization. (Because the other 2 modes would freeze the camera when the lens is zoomed.) To use IBIS alone with an IS lens like the EF24-105 we will need the next Metabones firmware.

While we are waiting for the real fix, this workaround may (or may not) be enough to get GH5 going, assuming you are currently at the latest version (2.6, 2016-12-16).
There is a jog lever on most Speed Boosters. Press it inward and hold it down, and while keeping it depressed, either power on the camera (if the SB and lens has already been attached), or attach the SB or the lens (if the camera is already powered on). Do not let go until the camera has fully started up, which may take a second or so. Confirm the workaround is actually running by checking that AFC and AFF are disabled and unavailable. (You will be able to choose from only AFS and MF, if the startup is correct.) Now, you have iris control, some AF (but not AFC, continuous video AF, and AFS itself may not be accurate all the time), OIS if you have an IS lens, IBIS if you have a non-IS lens, and you would be able to zoom.
This is a temporary workaround, not thoroughly tested and may have problems. Let me know if this is good enough or not. Good luck.

The GH5 has only been out a week, relax. Of course Metabones will update the firmware, but it probably takes more than five business days.
The Lens Turbo is a dumb adapter, there shouldn't be any issues at all.

As it turns out, I spoke out too much too soon a couple of weeks ago. We have since then discovered and fixed more problems so now this latest update (2.5) is a must for all GX80/85 owners. Thank you for downloading and updating!

But owing to just this one lens, Andrew was compelled to downgrade to firmware 0.5 from more than 2 years ago. Back then the firmware did not manage OIS/IBIS interaction. In his tests using old firmware, both OIS and IBIS turned on and cancelled out each other. Actually if he had manually turned one of OIS/IBIS off, the old version would still have worked fine.
Andrew found our firmware from 2 years ago to be unsatisfactory, which I concur (although back then we could not have anticipated the GX85). I personally would say that except for that one lens, the Sigma 50-100/1.8, the current firmware is working, and it is doing what Panasonic's own Four Thirds to Micro Four Thirds adapter (DMW-MA1) would have done. The next version, 2.5, which will be launched soon, will be great, and will have the flexibility of OIS/IBIS selection by the end-user.

The AF+MF option is under the "Gear C" tab of the menus.
I just tried both a Lumix lens and a Canon 50/1.8 STM on my GX85. In both cases, you will have to keep the shutter half-pressed for manual focus to work, in video mode. This is because the camera lets you manual focus only while AF is locked. It is easy to see that if the camera keeps on autofocusing continuously and you manually intervene, AF and MF are only fighting with each other. But with AF lock, the camera temporarily pauses adjusting focus so you may adjust focus manually.

I am in charge of firmware at Metabones and I would like to give an official response with regard to GX80/GX85.
We do not expect any EF mount to be able to take advantage of Dual I.S. in the foreseeable future. Either OIS or IBIS should be used, but not both. Andrew reported that "They seem to both operate and ignore each other, leading to problems." We could confirm that it is indeed the case when we downgrade to 1.4 or before. This was fixed in 1.5 a long time ago (Feb 2015). It is easy to tell one way or another: if both OIS and IBIS are active simultaneously, vibration will be overcorrected by twice as much and there will be just as much jitter as no IS, which is indeed what we see with adapter firmware 1.4 or earlier. If you are seeing just occasional slow jitter, it is likely you are observing the result of the vibration exceeding OIS' capabilities of that particular lens.
We have a 50-100/1.8 on order, but before that arrives, the most likely hypothesis drawn from Andrew's and our own observations is that adapter firmware 1.5 and after breaks the 50-100/1.8 and the old firmware 1.4 and before breaks all IS lenses (no AF and double correction). If this hypothesis is correct, you are okay with the current adapter firmware except for the 50-100/1.8 and except for the fact that you will be always using OIS but never IBIS.
A new adapter firmware will be around the corner with which we expect the 50-100/1.8 to be fixed as well. There will be a new option to choose between IBIS and OIS on Panasonic in the next firmware, something that is just natural for Olympus but not yet possible for Panasonic. (On Olympus if you turn off lens IS, IBIS comes on, but on Panasonic the lens IS switch turns off both OIS and IBIS.) The procedure to turn off OIS and turn on IBIS on Panasonic is not going to be pretty, but it will be doable.
I enjoy reading Andrew Reid's very informative review and tests, we greatly appreciate his work and we are always listening to customer reports of any issue which might arise. However, we would like to advise our customers that writing to support@metabones.com is the only way to ensure a problem is looked into in a timely manner. I do read eoshd often, but it is not a reasonable expectation that just because something is reported or discussed on eoshd we must be working on it. We appreciate you informing us of any issue via the official support channel in advance. That would greatly expedite the fix.
