  1. Yes - I will take a tripod with me next time and will take more time to make sure focus is good. Looking forward to hear about tips and tricks others have used to get the best images from their Blackmagic camera
  2. Hi I brought my pocket camera for tests in streets, markets, music shows etc. Had a couple of shots that are amazing but all the other shots are a bit dissappointing though. What are doing to get the best IQ from your pocket camera? To get the best sharpness, color depth and dynamic range in-camera Here's one tip that worked for me : Use a wide-angle (Tokina 11-16mm) to minimize camera movement + Speedbooster.   3. Hi Good choice for the Sigma 18-35mm + 2 adapters. Since you have $900 left, I would recommend getting an autofocus lens such as the Panasonic 20mm f1.7 ($400). Since it's your main camera, there will be times where you want to just go around town or hike in the woods and get interesting shots, for smaller projects. The autofocus would help. Also the BMPCC's screen is small and it's hard to make sure there's focus (even with focus peaking on). And finally, with the 20mm, it will become truly pocketable.
  4. I have tried once to get footage from a bike. The shootage was very shaky and framing was very hard. I would to multiple tests before the documentary to find a way to rig the GH3 to a bike. A 12-35mm with image stabilization would also help here

  6. @Ramirez I have yet to see a good stabilizer option for the Gh3. Currently I use a monopod with a shoulder pad. @Vesku yes the GH3 is different in PASM modes compared to Canon or Nikon. I shoot with 180 degree angle so that's how it's set up. I have to be very careful though if I do photography. For resolution, the GH3 has more in photography but the GH2 resolves more in video. No big difference though @Ramirez - I'd love to try out the IBIS in the Olympus EM5 or EM1 !
  7. Hi Thanks to Andrew, I got the Panasonic GH3 9 months ago. I figured now was a good time to write a review about it. It's not a technical review (EOSHD/dpreview etc.) are much better than me, it's more of a personal review on how I use and how I feel about it. Let me know what you think :D
  8. I like the idea of XLR + HD-SDI adapter - would be much more practical than trying to attach a Zoom or Tascam to a GH3

  11. Just a note, I think the BMPCC is not suitable for event or documentary, that's where the GH3 shines. I agree with Ben above, a monopod with a video head would increase a lot your shots. It's portable, quick to setup, affordable etc. If you don't have decent audio, then it's time to get something. You can get the best image in the world but if we can't hear what they say, then it's moot.
  12. Why would you need image stabilization for the 20mm pancake? It's wide plus also fast. Also you can get a riser for the camera so you can put it on a tripod I would get the GX7 if you want to focus on stills, otherwise it's the gM1
  13. I think you can't really count on Metabones. On my side, I've got the Speedbooster to use with a Tokina 11-16mm Nikon mount and another 50mm f1.8 - but I've got as well the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 Canon mount. I find the 18-35mm is very good focal lengths for the Blackmagic. If I need wider or longer, I'll use the 2 other lenses.

    wow that's a lot. My wish-list: better dynamic range less moiré focus peaking if possible, image stabilization similar to Olympus EM1 better electronic viewfinder (doesn't smudge when you move your eye sideways)
  15. Hi Svenn, I recommend getting the Tilta rig - it's stylish and rock solid. Wrote a review of the bmpcc cage / armor / top handle here For $320, I was impressed by the quality and will get a follow focus to complement as well as their shoulder mount. I also want to get their wooden hand grip but not sure how to add that to the rig (need a rosette bracket) Another accessory that I'm looking at is the Atomos ninja 2 as a monitor. Bigger screen, plenty of resolution, focus peaking etc. and I'm all set.
  16. If Sony A7R is similar to D800, how good is D800 compared to the panasonic GH3 or the Canon 5D mark III? I have never used the D800 and I don't know anyone in my circle who is using one for video. Thanks
  17. Hi There are posts on nofilmschool and other websites on Metabones releasing a SpeedBoster for Canon EF lenses to micro 4/3 for August 2013 I haven't seen any updates. Now we are November 2013... Currently I have a Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 that I would like to use with a Speed Booster on the BM Pocket Camera. I also have many other EF lenses. Someone knows of a release date for the SpeedBoster EF, or is there a combination that works with 2 adapters? For example with going with a third-party mount Minolta, Nikon, Fuji etc. Thanks
  18. I've tried doing raw with the Nikon 1 V1 and the biggest drawback was the workflow. Having to wait hours between image processing and also file transfers was painful. I would love to see a workflow application that ingests easily the footage, integrates with either Aperture, Lightroom or Resolve for grading, and then prepare all files for editing (Premiere or FCP). i.e you plugin the CF card, you choose the grading, and voilà you let the workflow work for a few hours. You then see at the end all the clips nicely together in Adobe Premiere.
  19. People shots with the 18.5mm f1.8, tested color correction in Aperture in 3k. Love the camera! This is a 8GB card. I need to use a 64GB card for serious work
  20. I had the Nikon 1 V1 with the 10-30mm and the 18.5mm f1.8. I hoped the whole setup would be pocketable but the lenses are big (compared to the body). Did a quick low-light test, at 30fps, lens 18.5mm @ f1.8. Shots are from ISO 640, 2000 up to ISO 3200 in the last 2 shots https://vimeo.com/61990361 You can download the file on vimeo Workflow: imported to Aperture, played with color on a picture, then copied adjustments to the other 29 pics, and same for the next series of shots. All shots were then exported and were imported as stills in Adobe Premiere. Played a little bit with Time Stretching. I didn't find the export to Prores option so finally exported in H.264 3k @ 130mbps Comments I like a lot the grain, low-light is superb It has a cinematic Vine app feel to it, but in 4k, and takes 4 hours to shoot/edit/upload instead of 1mn for Vine. And no sound I was quite aggressive in the beginning with the color work (exposure, recovering highlights, pushed the blacks a lot) but then it didn't worked out when exporting. I had to redo the color work and lost 1 hour. So I learned what works in RAW photography doesn't work for video I also was impatient, and only got 8 or ten shots for a few, because I didn't wait for the buffer to clear. So make sure you wait at least 1mn before taking another shot You also have to be patient when exporting the RAW to jpeg (30mn) and also exporting (took twice more time than usual) It feels like a very specialized tool, and agree with the others above. There are lots of creative constraints which makes it even more interesting!
