Dear Sony… The A55 is just not good enough

Above: the Sony A55, which died today.

UPDATE #1: Sadly the same applies to the Sony A580 – the full sized DSLR which has also been announced. It also has interlaced footage, low bite rates and limited manual controls (aperture priority and that is all). Who is responsible at Sony for these blanket movie mode limitations?

UPDATE #2: Not everybody gets the DSLR video revolution and it is these customers Sony are catering for. Could their stance actually HELP sales of the Sony A55 overall and will video modes continued to be dumbed down without manual controls and 24p on future video DSLRs? It looks like it! The Sony A55 has been announced and picked up one glowing review after another. My view of the video mode, is very different. You may remember I was very excited by this innovative transparent mirror DSLR when we heard the rumours (which turned out to be correct) a few months ago. But they have crippled the video capabilities.

Dear Sony… Canon and Nikon are market leaders in DSLRs. If you’d like to compete, I recommend recognising their strengths.

Cinema EOS Part 2 – 7D Grading with Magic Bullet Looks – Adam Gichie

Here is a gem of a ‘mood piece’ from EOSHD.com forum member Adam Gichie graded in Magic Bullet looks and shot in England.

This is some of the most nicely graded footage I have seen for some time and a big part of it is Adam’s custom in-camera picture profile for the 7D.

Reading between the lines. Canon 60D to become flagship video model?

Lots of rumours are hitting the net ahead of the expected ‘2 waves’ of announcements from Canon next month and in August. One of the cameras constantly mooted is a 60D.

But I see a problem with this and something profound has been missed.

Canon plot their next move in the DSLR video revolution

What do senior Canon product planners think of DSLR video?

EOSHD.com has rounded up a ‘state of the union’ collection of the latest Canon quotes, from the people who make big decisions. These guys decide company strategy and channel customer requests from key markets like the USA to Research & Development back in Japan. Like a true democracy, Canon say that what happens next will depend on what customers ask for.

And it seems most want the DSLR video revolution to keep on going.

New Sony Alpha HD A33 and A55 cameras to get phase-detect AF in video mode

UPDATE: The Sony A55 has now been announced and a review is out. It is very disappointing in terms of the video mode

EOSHD has been made aware of an innovative step in DSLR video by Sony.

Read more on the Sony Pellix HDSLRs here

UPDATE. Specs are now revealed:
1) A55 16MP 10FPS EVF-1.44M 1.1X magnification 95% AVCHD full HD
2) A33 14MP 7FPS EVF-1.44M 1.1X magnification 95% AVCHD full HD

According to new information obtained by Sony Alpha Rumors and given to EOSHD for analysis before publication, the new Sony Alpha HD cameras coming in September 2010 will have a light beam-splitting technology allowing phase detect AF at the same time as mirrorless live view and video recording.

Sony have always been innovative when it comes to live view, with the small-sensor-in-viewfinder technique on the previous Alphas.

Final Zacuto Shootout airs!

Watch the shoot out on Zacuto.com here

This, the final part of Zacuto’s HDSLR versus 35mm film web series has a number of eye-openers.

If you haven’t seen it already don’t read any further!

I’m going to go into quite a bit of detail on what I think is the conclusion, for me anyway, of this shootout.

So, spoilers ahead…
