The technology behind the shoot is rather interesting. Two Sony F3 cameras mounted on the front of the train, remotely controlled and recording to e-sata drives in the control carriage, kitted out with Joe Dunton / Panavision anamorphic lenses from London.

Joe Dunton is a British Bafta winning camera equipment guy who has always held a great fascination with anamorphic lenses, and was one of Stanley Kubrick’s closest collaborators after A Clockwork Orange in the 70’s and provided Kubrick with his lenses on Eyes Wide Shut.

Sony F3 has 4 times light gathering ability of 5D Mark II

The Sony F3 will have a dedicated Super 35 video sensor with huge pixels – can DSLRs compete?

With news from Sony that the F3 has a built anew Exmor Super 35 2k sensor unrelated to DSLRs comes an interesting dilemma for DSLR users. I’ve been doing some research into the pixel sizes (and light gathering ability) of the leading video DSLRs.

Lowdown on the Sony F3’s 2K cinema sensor

It appears the Sony F3’s sensor has a few tricks up it’s sleeve relative to the cheaper AF100.

Sony Japan say their Super 35mm Exmor CMOS in the upcoming F3 is completely new and has pixels which are 4x the size of typical DSLR CMOS ones. Approximately 12 microns sized versus as little as 3 microns on APS-C DSLRs (according to Sony).

The Canon 5D Mark II has a much larger sensor but 22MP. That one works out at 6.4 microns, so even against that beast the F3 comes out with twice the light capturing capabilities per pixel.

Sony F3 – Who would have thought film industry dogma would be worth so much money?

Sony’s F3 is here, a competitor to the Panasonic AF100 in all but price.

The F3 is the reason for the lack of 24p in the NEX-VG10 and Sony’s DSLRs, the F3 is aimed squarely at the film, TV, broadcast and video industry in competition with Arri and RED and features a new Exmor Super35 CMOS. They have saved all the good stuff for this but it comes at a significant price – $28,000 with lenses and $20,000 without. 4 times more than the AF100.
