Samsung NX1 dead – Samsung customer support & retailers say camera discontinued in Europe

UPDATE – this article only cites one source (Samsung customer support). There are in fact numerous sources all saying the same. See below for the detailed update.

Samsung are telling potential buyers in Europe that the flagship NX1 is discontinued, less than a year after it was released. The timing is very odd given the peak sales period (Christmas) is just a few weeks away. Say Samsung:

“We quickly adapt to market needs and demands. In Europe, we will be discontinuing sales of NX1 cameras for now since there is already much better and upgraded cameras. This is specific to the region – and is not necessarily reflective of conditions in other markets. We will continue to thoroughly evaluate market conditions and will make further adjustments to maintain our competitiveness in emerging Camera categories.”

The importance of firmware updates and why Panasonic are too late with V-LOG for the GH4

Opinion piece, by Andrew Reid

In only a few months, 57 new features have been added to the Samsung NX1. Meanwhile Panasonic have been more keen than many to evolve their products, adding a 4K Photo mode to the GH4 and 24p for 4:3 shooting, a nod to anamorphic filmmakers. But it isn’t enough. No anamorphic de-squeeze for instance and now the time it has taken for V-LOG to reach us has been too long.

Firmware is a new battleground and manufacturers must play the game better.

Samsung NX1 vs Canon C300 (image quality)

The Canon C300 (currently reduced to $11,500) was the $15,000 stalwart of the professional videographer, only recently did it have a compelling rival – the Sony FS7.

The Samsung NX1 is essentially a cutting edge 4K Super 35mm sensor in a mirrorless camera, recently given a video oriented firmware update which improves dynamic range and the available image profiles.

I was curious to see how the images from these cameras compared and I put my Canon 1D C into the mix as well.
