Hands-on preview of the powerful 4K shooting Panasonic GH4!

Since the GH1 I have been shooting with Panasonic’s mirrorless system for video. Without this series of affordable cameras my early work as a cinematographer and filmmaker simply wouldn’t be the same. The GH4 marks a much needed major leap for the line, the first to shoot 4K to an efficient internal codec AND output 10bit 4:2:2 1080p over HDMI to an affordable external recorder like the Atomos Ninja!

On a visit to Panasonic I got to see the camera, see 4K sample footage and give my feedback. Here’s an account of what I saw…

Panasonic AF100 features uncompressed RAW video

I’ve rounded up some juicy quotes from Panasonic’s broadcast / pro division product manager which you may find interesting.

“This camera (the AF100) delivers an uncompressed HD output, if you want to by pass the AVCCAM codec, you may”

That’s good news to say the least. This means you can record uncompressed RAW 1080p on Nanoflash via HD-SDI. The biggest gains in HDSLR video is not going to be from incremental sensor improvements, but by a huge leap in image processing. How about aliasing? Does it line skip?

HOT! Panasonic AG AF100 Micro 4/3rds interchangable lens pro camcorder – release date, late 2010 plus Sony prototype at NAB!

Amazingly the rumours were right once again, and somebody from NAB leaked the AF100 to 43rumors a day before the press release was due.

The implications here are enormous.

The first interchangeable lens Micro 4/3rds camcorder is due to be released later this year and of course this is great news – so good to see Panasonic making intelligent use of their investment in the existing Micro 4/3rds technology.
