Though most of the development at Magic Lantern has been focussed on the powerful 5D Mark III, the latest firmware builds have also been ported to the 600D. How does it perform for raw video?

The Nikon D5200 is the best mid-range Nikon yet for video. What is more of a surprise is the relish in which it takes on the much more expensive 5D Mark III, Panasonic GH3 and Nikon’s own flagship the D800 and D4.

So 22nd December is here and so is the HDR Video mode and variable frame rates for the Canon 600D and siblings. The new version of Magic Lantern even supports the 50D!
I am really impressed with the way the Canon DSLR hack – Magic Lantern – has recently been progressing. Enabling video on cameras that didn’t have a video mode is a miracle in itself! (50D). Putting all the settings into a menu system on the camera rather than in a Windows app like PTools with the GH2 hack – also pretty good. As well as higher bitrate recording, ML has evolved to give us ISO 12,800 recording, peaking, crop marks, false colour, zebras and now even variable frame rates.
Note: the Sony A65 shares the same sensor, image processor and viewfinder as the NEX 7 and Sony A77. Image quality is 99% the same on all 3 models.
As part of my series of reviews on the Sony A65 I shot this comparison yesterday near Manchester, city of Oasis and Frank Sidebottom. The A65 represents the latest generation of Sony’s technology – 24MP APS-C CMOS sensor, ExmorHD image processor with 1080/60p and a 2.4MP OLED TruFinder. So is it any good?
It is really great seeing yet another manufacturer pony up and enter the DSLR video market. I use the Sony NEX 5N when I want an APS-C sensor, 1080/60p for slow mo and it works great with my rangefinder lenses – small, and even has peaking for manual focus.
My work-horse the GH2 hasn’t been getting as much attention with the Sony and Nikon news of late so time put it back in the spot light like a frightened rabbit in car headlights. It is still the best DSLR for image quality in video mode. And that is why I recommend it so much on EOSHD. Simple.
It’s been just over 6 months now since the launch of my first book about anamorphic shooting on DSLRs and in that time almost 1000 people have bought it – so first of all a big thank you to those that chose to adventure with me into anamorphic. Since the book is still popular I’ve decided to expand it.
This is what happens when you don’t overhaul your imaging chips for 3 years, Canon. The new Sony HX9v compact out-resolves the 600D’s video mode for resolution, and has 1080/60p. It is also a lot closer to a DSLR in terms of dynamic range than I expected it would be. It fits in my pocket and has a stabilised 24-380mm lens.
It has an image processor powerful enough to handle 43 megapixel panoramas in-camera as well, but that along with the incredible ACT stabiliser is something I’ll go into more detail on in the full review later.
The HX9v’s video mode is to compacts what the 5D Mark II’s video mode was to DSLRs.
