Nikon Zr is coming

from Nikon Rumors:

Brick-shaped, video-oriented design, without pentaprism and EVF – a combination of the current RED models design, the Sony FX3, and the Nikon Z30

Many features and tech from RED will be incorporated inside (not a new RED camera with Z-mount – we already got that)

Z6 III sensor inside

Very large LCD screen

The official announcement is expected later this year, most likely in the third or fourth quarter of 2025

I don't know what Frankenstein of a brick body would be the combination of RED/FX3/Z30, but "very large" LCD gives hope its a bit different from whats already available in the market.

What I would like is:

A. The frame markers and 6k 30p open gate (preferably 50/60p) from Lumix, plus,

B. Ability to burn in RED luts, plus,

C. Zf or e Mount, I don't mind which as all my e Mount lenses mount near natively to Zf mount, plus,

D. FX3/30 style body.

Ability to shoot stills not required, but if it can, fair enough.

Mechanical shutter optional, - I don't care either way.

No EVF, don't care.

Must have good IBIS.

Must be relatively compact and not require any rigging out, ie, primarily, a really decent flip and rotate screen a la A7RV/S1H/S1Rii.

Could be a Nikon Zr...

Could be a Sony FX2...

Unlikely to be anything Lumix because the lens options are still just a bit lacking for me.

An EVF less Z30 with a big screen sounds very much like one of these to me.

Easily doable even with the Z mount, but I doubt Nikon goes so big. So far, nobody among Japanese camera makers have implemeted 5 inch display into their morrorless bodies. Its like a taboo over there. Maybe because they think it ruins the ergonomics of the body.

  • Still a photography hybrid camera, RAW shooting at 20fps
  • Price expected to be in the region of $4.5k
  • 14bit sensor readout in 6K, 14.5 stop dynamic range

Where are these from? Nikonrumors didn't post these? I'd like to see 14bit readout too though.

This is also a comment from Phil Holland, which isn't too different:

"If I was a guessing man, I think the efforts of RED and Nikon could lead to a smaller sized FX3-ish sort of Komodo, probably a model with in body stabilization to appease the crowd. But perhaps sticking to a more useful Komodo-X body type with a focus on trimming some length and weight. Maybe getting it down to 2lbs again. Perhaps with a flip up top LCD that folds down and rotates for protection with a decent latch so you can still use it for things Komodo really does well."

Personally I'd really like to see open gate, and ND's.

And then there was one.

If they commit to it, they'll be able to make a camera comparable to the S1II, with which share the sensor. But it's Nikon, and it will be a huge success.

They didn't use the full potential of that sensor in Z6iii. It can output two images per frame, one at first base ISO and one at second base ISO. Then the processor can combine them to achieve near 14 stop of DR. But as its 2x data, it takes longer to read out, hence the slow read out of S1ii when DR Boost is ON. Either Nikon's Expeed processor isn't capable enough for that task, or they didn't find that rolling shutter effect acceptable, or its a feature that needs premium license they didn't bother to pay.

Almost certainly.  My guess is a mirrorless camera with Redcode raw which could be fantastic for people in Nikon's ecosystem.

But Redcode is 16 bit. Overkill for a sensor with 12 stop of DR. And I'm not sure Expeed 7 can handle that.

If it's the sensor that's used in S1 II, it has more than 12 stops of DR.  The slope-based DR test on cined shows 15.1 stops visible and the OG Komodo shows 15.7.  Also, did they say for sure it would use Expeed 7?  And even if they do, is encoding Redcode really all that taxing?  Red was shipping cameras that encoded 6K and 8K using it back in 2015 or so.

I'd also keep in mind that whether or not Redcode has any advantage over nraw on this specific camera, there are marketing reasons to use it.

Its in DR boost mode that for whatever reason Nikon didn't use. Slop based DR is irrelevant as it doesn't represent the "engineering dynamic range" of the sensor, which is at 1:1 signal ratio.

Here is max DR of S1ii in still mode, that uses the DR boost mode.

Its 14.5. Ignore ISO 80/63/50. They are fake.

And here is Z6iii

Screenshot_20250825_182751.thumb.jpg.26dfd258d391948c17d443ca6be8ac27.jpg

Its 12.7. So there is 1.8 stop difference.
