Wow! I still use a 5D3 for stills. Nothing wrong with it as long as you don't underexpose.

Same here, also got a used 5D4, but will be reselling it. Just to expensive to keep for the limited work I do at the moment. And the 5D3 is indeed good enough for still with fast glass when not pushing the exposure too much.

That's the problem with LOG. It always has a look baked in and it takes serious effort to get the best out of it and tailoring to a particularly scene. Whereas with RAW it is so much easier to get it looking cinematic. Magic Lantern RAW on the 5D Mark III in 3.5K still ranks above 95% of the camera market in terms of just image quality.

And those 5D Mark III become dirt cheap now. Just bought myself a 5D3 with 300k clicks and some battery/memory cards for just €200 😎

The 7d was Canon's flagship crop dslr camera, the 7R seems like a toy in comparison. I hope they are going to bring out a properly weather sealed mirrorless crop camera with decent video specs, cause this isn't it. This is Canon dropping the quality - a worrying sign

Indeed, if you compare the 7DII build quality against the R7, it looks (and probably feels) like a toy.
Wonder if it will even will survive though use like the 7DII did. I'm afraid this is the best we will see from Canon (in crop body anyway). Feel the same about the 5D series. While the R5 / R6 are specs wise a serious upgrade, these cameras will not survive the though conditions and 'misuse' people put their DSLR counterparts through.

Great video showing the streaking issues that the GH6 has with its current firmware version, and comparing the streaking with other cameras that share the same technology (FX3, Red V-Raptor, Pocket 6K Pro, S1H, and GH5).

Spoiler, the GH6 is worse than the others, but all the others (except the V-Raptor) have some degree of streaking.

My read on it is that since it appears to be heavily influenced by the ISO value and DR boost feature that this is something they can probably improve in future firmware updates.  We all know the camera isn't really "fully baked" yet as it still doesn't have Prores in 1080p or 4K modes, and lacks other features that Panasonic promised on release.

I think they rushed it out to stem the bleeding from all the "MFT is dead" BS from people who don't actually shoot anything, and will gradually improve it in future versions.

Maybe it's better to buy a second hand GH5 II now and wait till this camera is mature. Guess that will still take some years...

I think it’s more likely than not likely on the basis that the photography community is literally screaming at them to do so and also because the GH6 cannot be a GH5iii.

    I'm thinking DFD++ 😋

Somehow Panasonic won't or can't implement PDAF.
But if they somehow do, I can buy a cheap S1/S5 real soon 😎

I won't be.  I use manual lenses and although my ability to manually focus doesn't track subjects with the same accuracy, I have never ever ever mistakenly focused on the background instead of the subject.

I also film in the real world where my subject is surrounded by other faces and objects that there's no way the camera could distinguish between.  Little pocket cameras have the ability to set VIPs and actually take photos of the people you want it to focus on and they will detect faces and then analyse them for the VIPs, and be sure to focus on the VIPs instead of the other random people of less importance.  I don't have that option on any interchangeable lens camera I own, so there's no way that the camera can tell who I know and who I don't.

Then there's situations like this - how well do you think face-detect is going to work here?

    japan_3_76.1.thumb.jpg.f8969ee1daa0b8b1347a07a1717faac7.jpg

Sure, PDAF with face-detection is great for vloggers against a plain background, and it's great if you're shooting a wedding on a gimbal as a one-person operator, but for more complicated stuff it's still a very long way from solving the AF issue.

Besides, why settle for second best?  My P2K, M2K, and GH5 have the same focusing system as an Alexa 🙂

I'm in no way saying DFD is bad since I'm really impressed by the G9 2.0 update.
For photography I even like it better then the competition (that has PDAF) and for video with C-AF in good light it's also great.

Somehow people like bashing Panasonic for it's lack of PDAF, yet accept the crappy almost non existing AF from blackmagic. And you hear lots of rumors about new AF systems for the GH6, while I just thing it will have an (even more) improved version of DFD.

I'm very curious about what Andrew mentioned, that GPUs can't hardware accelerate 10 bit 422 footage.  Is that only when it's compressed in-camera, or is there the same issue with Atomos-produced ProRes 10 bit 422 footage?

Please don't say I have to buy your software to discover for myself (I bought a lot of your picture profiles and use them, they're great but this is just a one-question one-answer thing)

ProRes was made to be easy on CPU/GPU, so not sure hardware accelerated support will give any advantage. For h264 and h265 hardware accelerated support will give significant advantage.

Remember that the BMMCC never came with Resolve Studio. 440€ is a great deal, but take a look at the used market as well. You´ll probably need the cage and a focal reducer anyway. If you already have a lot of accessoires, 440 for a basically new one is a good price.

Thanks. Unfortunately the SmallRig Cage is discontinued and nowhere to be found in stock. Guess I better wait for a second hand deal with cage included then.

My point is that these codecs seem obsolete to me. They take up extreme amounts of storage space, and to my eye don't really have an edge on h264 and h265 with higher bitrates.

Indeed, but still love them for older cams that still have low bitrate codecs like C100, FS100/FS700, etc...
You can get those Ninja 2 / Blade nowadays for next to nothing and get a free monitor with scopes and false color as a bonus.
