Is Pentax still alive? Pentax is going to be the new Kodak 😄

The M50 made the list 😋 Indeed my most favorite Canon camera not including the ML hacks (5D3 and M).
Hopefully they will also release a cheap M50 II as I enjoyed this little crippled beast! -

Exactamundo, but bizarrely with the R5 it doesn't work - in use it's a car crash. I bought it specifically for unlimited 4K HQ in crop mode but confusingly it seems it only plays with the EOS R. Wasn't just a one-off either, it's a known non-starter for the R5. Canonrumours speculated that Canon will release their own speedbooster
Guess metabones can fix this with a firmware update if they want to.

Nice to know. Guess it was made for the EOS R crop 4k video?

I don't think there is any chance they will release a speed booster because they want to sell RF Lenses. I hope I am wrong! Speedbooster would be sweet on this camera... if its made by Canon. The canon adapter on the r5 is perfect and I don't have any issues with it ever on the R5.
Sure Metabones can make one and Viltrox can clone it!

Too bad prices nearly doubled for the Sony PMW-F3 now.

Also sigma should implement ibis on the fp?
So should Blackmagic, but I guess it's the same as with the flip screen.
If it can't move, it can't break + research cost + patents. -

Looks to me like the masses have already accepted it.

It looks great. It looks OEM. Can't really figure out why Sigma didn't do this. Can't imagine it would've been that much more expensive or more complicated.
If it can't move, it can't break (in warranty)?

I doubt we will see a practical magic lantern any time soon. Canon protected this camera better then before. Might require soldering to the motherboard to unlock bootloader etc now.

The RX8130 chip is a more advanced RTC clock and has timer function and user ram, so maybe canon uses this in some way for the overheating control.

Probably to box you into using RF lenses, and larger PL adapters won't fit. Cripple hammer time!
Lets hope the RF-EF adapter at least fits...

It's just that Canon knew they couldn't get away with overheating bullshit on the 1D X M3 which is sold on the premise of cast iron reliability to news organisations, sports photographers, agencies and journalists.
But why do this to the 5DIV successor? I know some wedding photographers that will not buy the R5 just because they heart it is unreliable and overheating. Since there is no upcoming 5DV, they will lose those customers to Sony or Nikon.

Who says this won't 'overheat'?
Edit: Looks like it has a fan outlet, so most likely the old cripple hamer!
-
Problem is that new RF lenses might require new R firmware. At some point you'll have to update it.

Can you roll back to previous version?
Since you can't download version 1.0, it's not possible to downgrade. Once 1.2 arrives, we will know if downgrade (to 1.1) is still possible. But I guess they can always block it if they really want to. Biggest danger is if they ever disable or protect the UART port on the camera. If they do, there is no peaking inside.

I do wonder whether they've actually made the R5 so good they've had to find artificial ways to limit what it can do thus protecting other models in their line-up?
I guess almost the same chipset of the R5 is going to be used in other higher end models (R1?) and some cinema camera's. Seeing how protective Canon now is, I'm not sure I'm willing to invest in RF glass and be stuck with Canon. At least with the EF glass, you can use Sony, Panasonic, Blackmagic, etc camera's.

so no more 3-4hr 4KHQ external recording when using new firmware?!
Atomos didn't mind that bug 🤣

Still a kludgy work-around for a $4k camera however. Good luck.
Indeed, doesn't look very professional for paying work and for all we know it might even void the warranty. Canon should offer us a permanent fix instead!

Entually, Steve Jobs held a press conference at Cupertino and announced free bumper cases for all users, saying: "We're not perfect… but we want all our users to be happy."
At best Canon will issue a firmware “fix” claiming “overheat management optimization” or something.
Or supply us with a free piece of scotch tape 😂

I think at this point they cannot do this anymore. Maybe just maybe this will end up resulting in a very good thing for us. If they would have just called it a time limit. Fine nobody would have bothered. But now they lied and made it a so seemed overheating problem. They just cannot change it into a time limit anymore, its too late for that. They will have to either remove the overheating problem and release the full potential, or do nothing at all and ignore us all. I am no lawyer, but this might bite Canon in the ass, if anybody sued them.
Indeed. They will likely just tweak the overheating timer and call it a day. But I do not like this new Canon. At least before you knew what the exact limits were.
-
Looks to me like they tried to cripple their units in another way this time. Instead of time and feature limits like before let's create a hidden overheating limit. It's a good thing they got caught on this! The worst thing is, if they just created 5 or 10 min recording limits on their 8k and 4KHQ, nobody would have complained. They would have expected this from Canon.

Said to myself I wasn't going to buy any new gear in 2021, but couldn't resist on a cheap original Canon C100 yesterday 😀
