I'm looking at those shots on a crappy old laptop, so take this with a grain of salt - but while the GH5 with filters shot looks great in terms of fall-off, it also looks quite soft. Won't all this manipulation make the image too soft (LC, DD1, digital olpf, 1080 upscale)?

I like a detailed, organic filmic image. Not the overly sharp digital look. But I don't want to go too far in the other direction and make it look like it was shot on Betamax with a 35mm adapter :)

Not really sure about the correct workflow with the filters but I assume you can adjust the sharpness in the picture profiles, or you can add back the sharpness and contrast in post

That is, the Alexa shot has no filter - nothing can quite match the two in terms of falloff. The GH5 (and I assume most every other CMOS camera) has a reflective 'stack', with no reflection dispersion. The falloff can be smoothed, specifically with a Tiffen Low Contrast 1/8 or 1/4 (but the contrast will be lowered from reference, no LC is closest to AA falloff strength). DD1 is amazing for texture though; in that sense, they can be matched.

*Oh - and the bokeh with this filter stack + light digital Olpf is amazing. It feels like I'm using incredible glass.

What's AA again? And the filter stack is using Tiffen or using Digital Diffusion? lol sorry I haven't kept up

Yes, that's why I didn't even consider filters for so long. Its not specific to Firecrest, those are the reference Full Spectum NDs for EC though (how the Day conversion was made). It needs a minimum of a 2 stop ND to fully cancel out the reflection; the glass also needs to be parallel to the sensor plane, as one ND I have is slightly off axis, resulting in a diverging reflection.

Interestingly, the Alexa doesn't even have this problem, despite having CMOS, as best I can tell. The falloff is silk and there are no ghost reflections, as I believe the filter is 'integrated', and not a stack (that causes 'stair-stepping' falloff):

Wow the Alexa one still looks amazing even with a filter. You think it can be achieved with a filter and adding a contrast on the GH5? Now I'm rethinking about purchasing a Promist. Looks like it will just look the GH5's shots muddy

Reasons that adding the effect in post is better:

    • It's free
    • It works on all your cameras and lenses without adapters
    • It works on all your past footage
    • It works on all stock footage
    • You can control the strength of it shot to shot
    • You can control it within frame (you can have the nice skin smoothing effects on skin and not have it go nuts from a direct light-source also in frame)
    • You can change the colour rendering like the Warm Pro Mist filters, or any other tint you care to make (even ones Tiffen doesn't offer)
    • You can change the characteristics to emulate their other filters (Black Pro Mist is only one of the filters they offer - https://tiffen.com/diffusion/ )
    • You can even have hybrid effects like light sources glow green with a red outer ring around them, all adjustable to taste
    • Real filters can have reflections under certain circumstances

Reasons that adding the effect in post isn't better:

    • It doesn't work properly if any channel is clipped
    • It doesn't work with any light-source that isn't in the frame
    • It isn't an exact match to the look

Things that aren't good reasons for doing anything:

    • That's how they do it in Hollywood :)

Exactly some directors want it done in post so they can control the strength or just leave it if it doesnt work in the shot

I respect Bay, he is for real, I do not watch his films though.

If anyone knows about NBA, is this 23 year old guy, that once was called in Sports Illustrated "the best high school player since LeBron James" and finally went no.2 in NBA draft, but his team (Milwaukee Bucks) released him (didn't even make an offer) so he went to Chicago, which he won local champions as a youngster for 20.000.000$ per year. After a month into the season Bulls are trying to find a trade partner, but they may just have to buy him out because the guy is "unplayable" in todays NBA and it seems he is destined for minimum contracts, or China - where they do not play defense anyway, Hero-ball is their game.

This guy, Parker, said last year "They don't pay players to play defense." This is a trap that everyone can fall in, in every aspect of life, if you go for the money, you may loose everything in the end, while loosing yourself from the beginning.

Michael Bay is great, because he does what Michael Bay do.

    Jabari Parker?

I agree with the above. If you gonna do it for the money, you won't get too far.

A GH5S + a light gimbal (I’ve had my eye on Icecam Vision 3; anyone have experience with it?) is a killer combo that does almost everything well except maybe extreme DOF and if you need that then a speedbooster will fix it.

In my opinion you can’t beat the versatility of a good m4/3 camera for video like the GH5(s) series. Almost any lens can be adapted to it. It offers a great balance between DOF and lightness/size of lenses and, when you need it, can be adapted to get the look you want. Every time.

panasonic would do well to recognize this and deliver the GH6 as a full fledged video monster. Forget the photo quality. The G9 is better in that regard.

What light gimbal can you recommend with a GH5s?

Nice!!  Looking forward to hearing (and seeing?) your impressions when it arrives :)

I kind of like that feeling on eBay when you think you might end up with a bargain, but mostly I just pay too much and don't know what I'm doing! ???

Yeah will post some pics and try to create a vid using it. Just beating around the bush which cheap adaptor should I buy for m43 & sony. Or maybe just buy a pentax to Canon one since I also have a Viltrox speedbooster and a Sigma MC-11 adapter.

Most of the time when I see bargains, I try to overthink coz the item might be too good to be true. Then I rationalize that what Im buying is a bargain and buy it. Then after a few days, a cheaper version will pop up and then regret my decisions

Sweet!!! Get yourself the SMC Pentax K 50mm 1.4 to go with it... a nice lens as well.

Actually already have the Takumar 50mm 1.4. Are they the same? But still can't test it coz I'm thinking if I can just buy a Pentax to Canon adaptor, since I already have a Viltrox speedbooster for m43 and Sigma mc-11 for Sony, or separate M42 adaptors for M43 and Sony

Yeah, I have like two tricks so I can make most footage look either way with any NLE... skillz.

But seriously, I am just trying some different things. I prefer coloring in FCPX, I think the curves are smoother but I think I prefer processing the footage through Resolve better than MLV App. MLV App is just too slow. I wish I could get the LogC curve in Resolve. My next test is to use the CST that Juan Melara uses in Resolve. I tested it once a while back and with just a simple LogC to Rec709 LUT and an S-Curve I came up with this...8927DD13-68EF-4392-8BAB-DFE0EC211595.thumb.jpeg.6b35c07aee84fceb7c7089ee76ea82ca.jpeg

That was shot with either the Canon 24-70mm f/4 or the 35mm f/2... I forget.

    Looks amazing!

  10. Impulse bought a Pentax 28mm f2 that’s supposed to be a repackaged Contax Zeiss ‘Hollywood’. Not the best decision, since I hear you can get one for 60bucks a few years before but now it goes for a thousand since its rarer nowadays. Saw one for 500  on ebay and snatched it. Here’s the eoshd writeup: https://www.eoshd.com/2013/07/60-pentax-lens-thats-actually-a-800-zeiss-by-designer-of-stanley-kubricks-nasa-glass/

Kinda want to see how it shoots video on my GH and Sony a6500 cams since I dont see any video about it on youtube

I use the X-H1 if I only do a few handheld shots. As soon as I bring stabilization I take the X-T3. Or of course both

If you don't need the features of the flagships like weather sealing, dual card slots and so on, I would wait 3 weeks for the X-T30 release. It might bring some of the X-T3 features, for a lot less money.

Thanks for letting me know about the X-T30! Can't wait :)

  12. 1 hour ago, frontfocus said:

I have both. The X-T2 delivers nice quality. But when it comes to features, especially in video, the X-T3 is in a different league. No crop up to 30fps, allows 5K 60 fps, 10bit, 400Mbps, Eterna, better Autofocus including eye detection, very low rolling shutter and so on. With all the discounts you could consider the X-H1 too. It's an X-T2 with IBIS, Eterna profile and a few other tweaks.
If you have any specific questions, just ask, I have all three cameras here at the moment

Thanks! So which do you use the most or go with whenever given the chance? X-H1 or X-T3?

That's one of the magical moments in that test - his white balance settings are everywhere (so consequently color shifting ), especially in case of GH5s, who knows maybe he also set camera to shutter priority ... What is enigmatic question also - did he see/check results before uploading them or just was in hurry to make youtube visitors happy as soon as possible? Or maybe everything was actually intended to be some sort of parody?

Yeah I think WB is on auto

Given the extreme low light nature of your upcoming shoot, I suggest that you rent one of the Sony cameras, like the A7SII or an A7III with 2.8 or better lenses. The Sony cameras seem to be around two stops better in low light performance, vs. my GH5s. If you can only use the GH5, you absolutely must use some very fast prime lenses. I have the Sigma 16mm / f1.4, Sigma 30mm / f1.4, Voigtlander Nokton 25mm f/0.95, Panasonic Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm f/1.2,  and Sigma 18-35 f1.8, among others. Any of these lenses would be a good choice for your project. In my opinion, the GH5 with an f2.8 lens will not be good enough for your project.

Best of luck on your project!

Yeah the Full Frame cameras are better in Low Light. What do you think are the advantages of GH5s aside from the flip screen and the small lenses?

A7III has ibis though (not as good as GH5) so I think that's a better choice
