  1. Yeah with the 12-60 you can't zoom in to 60 inside dark places coz you gonna lose light. Get a cheap prime like the Pana 25mm f1.7 or the Oly 45mm f1.8. Also, dont bump your Iso too much if you dont want noise. If you can use Neat to denoise, you can get away with increasing ISO then denoise in Neat.

  2. There are indeed users of the previous micro and pocket cameras that don't like the look of the new P4K since they say that it looks too digital. I have a coworker who keeps on debating with another coworker (who bought a P4K) about the look and 'cadence' of the old Blackmagic cameras. They both produce good footages but at the end of the day, they agree that content still matters.

Have you picked up a set of handles for the Zhiyun?

They work really well...make it a much more balanced gimbal to work with.

I can confirm. The handles make it less taxing carrying the Crane for extended hours, plus you can mount an external monitor if you want to

Pairing the Pocket 4K with some good vintage glass is pretty blissful. There's been a lot of talk about how it looks more digital and modern than the previous BMD cameras - and yeah sure, I guess it's not as organic and grainy as the 2,5K. But throw on some c-mount glass or a speedbooster and old Pentax stuff and the camera sings. Haven't used it with this kind of setup on a production yet, (it's playing second fiddle to the Ursa Mini and been on a gimbal on about half a dozen shoots now) but I'm just having a lot of fun taking it on a walk and just taking some throwaway nature shots. It's something I used to do back when I used the 5DMK2 regularly, and I'm happy it has revitalized that habit again.

This was taken with the speedbooster and a Pentax 35/2.3 M42 lens on a cool winter afternoon. One of my favourites due to the very distinctive, oil painting-kinda way it renders out of focus areas and the transition between them and in-focus areas.

What specific speedbooster did you use to mount the Pentax M42?

I've found that sometimes skin tones can go too pink, but it's normally just a matter of lowering the saturation to fix it.  I think of it like Canon footage which can sometimes have reds that are too saturated, so lowering the saturation of those colours after the conversion is a pretty standard way to treat a lot of footage from different cameras.

I also shoot auto-WB and in mixed-lighting (against Sage's guidance of course!) and it definitely gives you trouble in post.  Sometimes playing with the WB before the conversion can tidy things up nicely, and other times you have to do seperate adjustments to different parts of the image.  For example in the wedding shot you could adjust skin tones on one person and not the other by using a combination of a key and a power-window.  You might push the woman slightly toward pink and the man slightly towards yellow, or perhaps just desaturate him and adjust the woman to match him.

Good luck - fixing these kinds of problems isn't easy!

Yeah I think fixing WB first will ease color correction using the lut but I also use auto-WB because I dont have the time to always snap a gray card first. What I see that help is adjusting the saturation too. Loving this LUT and it has kept me from selling my GH5 for a P4K :)

  6. Anyone knows how to fix the highlights that are too bright through Resolve or some other means? A friend with P4k was asking me this that even though the highlights are not clipped, they can't be recovered even by highlight recovery in Resolve. But I'm not really a Resolve or P4K owner, so asking here if someone has found a way to recover the white spots on skins especially on faces?

This has been said over and over but is not true. None of the BMP4K images come close. They're not even in the same realm in my opinion.

I also hear the same sentiments from bmpcc owners. So is this a unique Blackmagic micro look or all the older Blackmagic cameras produce a better look & feel than the current P4K?

Well I am sure on average most people won't be spending literally all day using their camera on a Gimbal. So yeah even on the heavy side is not terrible for shorts takes. It is the every time you use it thing, every time you re pick it up you are going to have to tweak it. That is my bitch with Gimbals I don't care if they are on a iPhone.

Now something like the new Osmo Pocket you won't have to do anything I guess That would be nice. This stuff is not so bad if you have a crew. Each person has a job to do. If you are a one man band it gets old F ing with all this stuff to get 2 minutes footage for a B Roll. That is what pisses me off with a Gimbal or even a Glidecam..

Actually realized that even using a light gimbal like the Crane plus, it takes a toll on the arms using it all day. Just went on a tour while carrying a gimbal and I tried shooting with it the whole trip and it affected how I shoot at the end of the day. I did put it down from time to time but there were a lot to see and by the end of the tour, I wished I just went handheld.

  9. Tried the Ronin-S but the big grip and the weight prevented me from using it on long shoots. Recently been using Zhiyun Crane 2 and Zhiyun Crane plus. But I agree the options and control can be frustrating. Currently favoring the Plus just because I can stick it inside a bag and bring it anywhere.

@TurboRat Yes, the 17x .vlt format, interpolated by the GH5 internally, is not good enough for GHa (note is in the ReadMe next to the .vlts)

The actual 65x V3 is mathematically smoothed to have 'perfect 3D curves', so to speak (impossible to have artifacts from the conversion). In terms of smoothness, its on a whole new playing field from V2.

The GH5 footage can show the slightest banding in moving gradients (lens flares etc) with All-I (the best the GH5 can do internally), though that will be common to any color correction. The P4K will be different though

Thanks. Will just use V2 while shooting just for preview then use V3 when applying the LUT in Premiere or Resolve

  11. I get some weird banding issue when using the lut preview on a GH5s, using the new version of GHAlex. So decided not to use it and stick with the old version instead. Havent tried using the v3 on Premiere though so not sure if this is just a preview issue

I always wanted to get the DMW-XLR1 microphone adapter, however, the controls are on the LEFT side.
I work from the RIGHT side.

Anyone try the Lanparte extension cable for the DMW-XLR1 microphone adapter?
Suppossedly the Canon OC-3 external flash cable adapter works also?

These would be great, if they work, allowing you to mount how you wanted, and NOT on the hot shoe mount of the camera body.

What do you mean left side? Arent the controls at the back? you can turn it before sliding

I agree.  $2000+ for the camera, when you can actually (pre-)order it for $800 less?  Might as well get a Canon C100 or the Ursa and be done with it.  Like some others, not in no rush to get it.  Wait until all pre-orders are done for it to sell solid.  The camera itself is looking good so far.

Also like it and what the camera offers. But quite happy with what  current cameras from other brands offer so also not in a hurry

Maybe post a list of requirements that you are looking for in a camera rather than keep criticising a camera you don't own and don't intend to buy?

Relax dude not saying P4K is trash lol I just said I'm gonna wait til next year, aside from the problems posted, it's also out of stock

Of course. It is so funny certain comments... Well, I shoot for two, three decades now and I can tell you quite frankly:

    image.png.d5fc2f60ea54ee304e180676e2ee9ebe.png

This is the easiest and best camera I've ever shot with. Period : )

Don't believe it? Stay at the dark side then. Your loss... Not of many others who are getting fun from there.

BTW, solid manufacturers like Canon, Panasonic, Sony, Olympus and so on should learn with these guys how to set up an intuitive and PRO menu like these Aussies.

    My hat : -)

Hmm this post sounds fishy

It's released in limited quantities anyway, and with a lot of camera options available, not in a hurry to get this one.

I honestly can't keep up with these guys. They've revamped the SliderOne series again (no more SliderOne Pro). So now you've got two SliderOne options with different weight capacities (and a $3-400 price difference at reg. price) + it looks like they've revamped the Motion Box which is now the Head One, and added a HeadOne Plus.

    https://edelkrone.com/products/sliderone-v2

So the Sliderone V2 has an included motor like the SliderOne Pro. Motion Box is now HeadOne where there Sliderone V2 can also be added to? Damn these guys .

They cover shipping to and from for repairs. That's a pretty strange reason to not buy a camera.

They cover shipping and repair for the P4K? That's great! They said they didnt when the Ursa Mini for the company that I worked for before craps out randomly

I don't think any P4k owners (including me) think it's perfect but if you  are waiting for a perfect camera then good luck with that......

BTW - Samsung 1TB T5 on Amazon at the moment for £189.99.

Not gonna wait for a perfect cam, just gonna wait until next year to get a P4K. Dont want to pay shipping to ship back a defective one to Blackmagic then pay again to ship it back to me.

Samsung SSDs are really fast and been looking for a good 1TB deal for quite some time (already have the 250gb)

What kinks are you talking about?

We're producing with them daily and haven't had any issues.

It's the most advanced small camera I've ever worked with.  Incredible image, interface and features.

The rest is all internet speculation.

    - Battery getting stuck -

    - Battery doors suddenly opening (also happens to a coworker's P4K) -

    - red clipping - there's a workaround with resolve though

    - footage turning green

I mean if P4K owners say it's perfect then it's perfect, and that these problems are isolated cases. In my opinion I'm gonna wait it out.

I've got the Hoya ProNDs 1,3, and 6. I recently switched to the Firecrest 1,3 and 6. Still have the Hoyas though. I use Xumes for quick swapping

Heard good things about the Firecrest

Man this camera is looking like you have to have about 20 extra things to make it work. Hmm, It is moving off my radar screen more and more every day. This is like going back to 1990 stuff. You had to buy a Van just to haul all the stuff you needed.

There are still some kinks to iron out. So I'm gonna wait til next year for next production P4K. By then, there will be a ton of advice / workarounds for some of its problems. No rush to buy unless you really need that Blackmagic RAW.
