Just checked now (without the 1:2.40 frame guides) and yes there is a very slight corner shading wide open at the wide end but I wouldn't call it a problem and nothing that can't be fixed in the grade. Maybe on the Metabones it's different though?

Okay, I just figured this out: it's the HOOD. With the sunhood on I get significant vignetting (on the left especially). Without it it's, like you said, not worth mentioning.

  2. That's weird, because I definitely am. Are you shooting at the full sensor width? I'll get some screen caps later today :)

Also my comment about full frame was in reference to Emanuel saying the lens is usable at full frame except for the wide end while my experience is that that's not really true.

Indeed. SB XL is designed for FF while Ultra model for APS-C coverage, but there's also some glass which covers FF such as 18-35mm f/1.8 other than the wide end.

For people getting their hopes up, this is slightly misleading. My experience has been the following:

The 18-35 will vignette even on a .71x ('ultra') speedbooster until about 20mm in DCI 4K (only barely and not worth mentioning in Ultra HD). It's sort of usable but the vignette is definitely there across the whole left and right side and it's relatively severe.

It will basically be unusable on full frame on my A7RII until 35mm, at which point you might as well use the lighter, better, brighter 35mm 1.4 ART.

  4. The P4K will actually be better for small-budgeted crews in that regard because Prores runs much, much smoother than h.264 (because your computer doesn't have to do as much decompression in real-time). My old laptop tore through Ursa 4K Prores 444 files but stuttered with a7s II 4k footage.

I got confirmation from Kamera Express yesterday that they received a shipment and have sent it out to people who had preorders. I'm number 10 on their list, but didn't get one, so I guess they didn't get many and assume (really hope) I'll be in the next batch.

Meanwhile, a few other places I've contacted expect to sell  to people without pre-orders in 4 months. - but that seemed like a total guess.

Just FYI, Kamera Express is terrible with sending out pre-orders in the correct order. They basically just seem to pick a name at random from their list and ship it to them - I know people who ordered on the 9th of April who haven't gotten anything, and people who ordered in September(!) who did.

So many false informations here... It’s not specificaly targeted at you but yes you can totally record custom baked in LUT and that’s an overlooked killer feature. Actually the biggest feature after raw. You can basically get any look straight of camera. I have a review coming showing the power of it !

And so was I worried about highlights handling and DR when I first watched the early footage online. But I can tell you : this camera has more DR than the « legendary » original BMPCC. Once again, I’ll show it in my review. So to sum up : saying that GH5 has a better output for SOOC footage is nonsense I think, granted extended video mode and video mode aren’t any good (you can achieve something pleasing with extended video LUT applied on RAW when you have complete control on WB, with PRORES, I find it to be more complicated...)

Anyway, people (me included !) shouldn’t jump at conclusions when they’ve never shot with the camera.

That's awesome, thanks for correcting me!

  7. This is a really nice testament to how resolution really has gigantic diminishing returns when it comes to perceptual image quality. Manufacturers should be investing in things that actually matter such as color-depth, color-science and dynamic range. This footage looks like it was shot on a 2010 handycam, except with somehow worse color-science.

All other things being equal, in regards to skin tones, would you say that Cine4 at 0 EV gives better skin tones than SLOG2 at around +2 after grading? Or are they about equal? You said with regular grading they both look about equal, so i am assuming that also refers to skin tones being on par with each other when exposed optimally. (I haven't been able to test on skin tones really.)

The reason I stopped shooting Slog was the fact that by overexposing by two stops the skin tones get really pasty and thin most of the times. I much rather have good skintones than some extra dynamic range, however I agree with you on the fact that the Cine curves have terrible highlight roll off.
