  1. The optimist says Canon is milking every last bit of coin out of their old sensors to finance development of a new and modern sensor architecture to compete directly with Sony and Nikon.

The pessimist says Canon is milking every last coin out of their old sensors before they are finally forced to give up and move to Sony sensors just like everyone else.

  2. 1 hour ago, Andrew Reid said:

The A6300 was a dog back in 2016 when the competition was far less, no X-T3 or G85 back then, or E-M10 III.

X-T3 is a similar price now to when the A6300 was released back in 2016.

The X-T3 today is $1399 new (less used) and the A6400 is $900 so a difference of $500 max, the price of a low-end Sony E-mount prime. The 23mm F2 and 35mm F2 Fuji X lenses are cheaper than their equivalent Sonys and the 18-55mm F2.8-F4 zoom is superior to any Sony APS-C zoom equivalent for just $300.

I don't see why people would be interested in paying more for the A6400 + primes + decent zoom than the equivalent Fuji kit.

If you look at the A6400 body in isolation, sure it's cheap-ish. But it's also naff-ish, 2-3 year old tech with terrible rolling shutter and bad ergonomics.

The target market is a prime area to do some innovations... flip out 5" touch screen for example. All-new user interface and menus suited to touch screen operation. Better touch-pad AF interface. Better smartphone integration and Bluetooth LE.

Sony took the easy option and did nothing.

Sounds like you could be describing a cut down BMPCC 4k with functional AF or an XT3 with a cheap ass front facing monitor.

BM could probably take this market by storm if they really wanted to, by pairing a cut down (and SMALLER) BMPCC 4k with a seriously dumbed down version of Resolve.

  3. Is it weird that I'm seriously considering trading my NX1 for one of these? Having played with one in the store the ergonomics are somewhat similar. Of course the advanced photo features I will probably never ever use but the combo of good Olympus color SOOC, amazing stabilization, over sampled 4k with a decent codec, and a non-dead lens system is really tempting. The only thing giving me pause is that the EM-5 III will likely have all of that as well in a smaller, cheaper package. And since I already traded my NX500 for a GX85 it seems like the logical next step.

P.S. If anybody has pull with Olympus please ask them to axe the 29 minute video recording limit for non-EU markets. Many people don't care but for those of us that film long static events (e.g. lectures) it is a major annoyance.

  4. The kid is not holding anybody else's money, he will either deliver on his own time when he's good and ready, or he won't and we can all go back to our regularly scheduled activities. Brow beating and bear baiting is not going to change anything. I agree it was probably a strategic mistake to start posting about this before it was completely done, but that's understandable given his age and probable level of excitement.

  5. Glad someone (anyone) else appreciates the wonder of the NX1's DIS. It's really quite brilliant. Why has no other manufacturer done that? Can you imagine how good it would be in S35 mode on a full frame sensor? And all with no need for physical hardware to sling the sensor around. My setup has organically gravitated towards a Contax 28-85 with dumb adapter and the 16mm pancake in a pocket in case I need to go wide (or have AF). I don't have any S lenses.

Once Luca finishes the next batch of NX-L I might ditch the 16mm entirely. He is a one man band and doing this more for love than money as far as I can tell so I see no point in rushing him.

  6. Is the NX1 a great camera? Absolutely. Is it still competitive in 2017? In some areas surprisingly yes. Should someone with no investment in NX gear and no need for NX1 specific features (really only h.265 comes to mind here) buy one in 2017? No way, Jose.

No warranties, no repairs, no replacements. Any money you're putting in now you will never get back. EVEN IF the NX1 was the best camera ever made I still wouldn't recommend buying one now, unless you can find one with lens for really stupidly cheap.

That being said, would I trade my NX gear for a GH5 or a6500? Heck no lol.

  7. You'd need

    -2x optical nx teleconverter

-Contacts to pass aperture and AF signal

The film days were littered with terrible 2x teleconverters which you can now buy for pennies, to use as paperweights I guess. There were a few good ones that still sell for $$$. I'm not sure you really can get NX-L optical quality out of a teleconverter because you're doing the opposite thing right? Blowing up your image circle is going to take all the bad things about your lens and make them two times as bad isn't it? 2px wide CA is going to become 4px, etc. Unless perhaps you include some carefully thought out elements to correct for that...

Seriously Samsung why no nx 300mm f2.8? We know you made some.
