lwestfall got a reaction from Dave Maze in Which handheld gimbal should I get for a6500?
It's hard to beat the Crane and the a6500 for a relatively affordable and compact stabilized autofocus high-detail rig. (Which has never overheated for me with the high-temp setting on - I just ignore the warning icon.) And yes, your setup will work. My similarly hefty and jerry-rigged Zhiyun Crane V1 setup actually balances and articulates quite well, even with a Breakthrough X4 ND 6-stop ND filter and the lens hood on that hefty 18-35/1.8 lens and with my Church Audio Ugly 2 Preamp and CA-14 Cardioid Mics mounted on top of my a6500 with 3M Extreme Mounting Tape. With the Arca Swiss plate under my a6500 it's easy to switch between my RRS QR tripod mount QR and the gimbal's SunwayFoto DDC-60LR QR Clamp, and I like keeping a Cullmann 50081 Magnesit Copter Multi-Tripod at the base for setting the gimbal down or using it as a little boom. I just hooked my recently obtained USB cable up too, and it's nice to have smooth Clear Image Zoom and Record controls handy. I too have thought of attaching a SmallHD Focus (and my LED light panel) to the handle. Thanks for the idea for that clamp arm.

I finally got the new firmware installed (make sure you plug your USB cable into the handle, not the pitch motor housing up top), and now the gimbal is indeed smooth and stable (including pitch which was previously bouncy) in ALL modes with my 70D + Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 Art! (755g + 811g = 1566g!) Yippee!

4k 60p and better battery life are a must.
Better ergonomics and 10-bit codec would be nice.
Built-in ND filter would be a dream.

I wouldn't be surprised if they put the A9 sensor in an A7S body for a video oriented release. Given the advances in sensor technology, it is possible that it would be just as good in low light as the A7Sii as both have full pixel readout. The advantages of a 24 MP sensor are clear for photography and video, and give you digital zoom/full 4K at super 35. Maybe even 4K/60p at super 35 if the readout is fast enough, and hopefully better quality for 120 fps. The new longer life battery would be a bonus, but dual cards are not essential as video users are used to dual recording. Improved AF and a more affordable price would make for a very attractive option.

I wish they had released all 3 models at the same time. A little sick of playing the guessing game.

I was just at the Sony press release and spoke to a Sony Rep. there was literally nothing interesting at the press release. I told the rep I was hoping for a Sony a9s and he asked me why? I told him it's because I want Slog and better video features. He then asked me "why why don't you just get an a7S II?" I said I want phase detect autofocus and the better battery. He then said "well you're going to have to wait a long time."
conclusion:
nothing new here. Looks like we will wait at least another 6 months before we see anything.
At least I got a free cookie.

lwestfall got a reaction from Beritar in Sony A6500 movie and photo samples are coming in
I don't think it takes much pixel peeping to see the obvious resolution advantage of 6k oversampling in the a6500/a6300 over the crop 1:1 pixel 4k options out there:
https://***URL removed***/reviews/image-comparison/fullscreen?attr29_0=sony_a7sii&attr29_1=canon_eos1dxii&attr29_2=panasonic_dmcg85&attr29_3=sony_a6300&attr72_0=4k&attr72_1=c4k&attr72_2=4k&attr72_3=4k&normalization=full&widget=378&x=0.4307963787018565&y=-0.174296745725317
And once you put a Metabones Speed Booster on with some sharp fast Canon/Sigma primes, the stabilized full-frame look and detail/resolution is hard to beat, especially for the price.
Yes I think it's easier to get good skin tone color out of Canons, but with a little practice one can get similar results with Sony.
I think a lot of people are just fed up with Canon holding back so much in every camera they put out anywhere close to this price range.

lwestfall got a reaction from Parker in My Review of the Zhiyun Crane 3-Axis Gimbal
I've been interested in attaching things to the handle but haven't come up with the best way yet. Perhaps something like the Daisho gimbal clamp system mentioned in the other thread by Cinegain or a long plate system or the upcoming two-handle attachment for the Crane.
In any case I don't see much reason to get the smaller Crane-M if there's any possible chance in the future you'd ever want to use a larger camera/lens combo on it.
FYI with the new "5D" firmware for stabilizing the pitch for heavier lenses, the Crane is now smooth and stable (including pitch which was previously bouncy) in ALL modes with my 70D + Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 Art! (755g + 811g = 1566g!) You can see before & after in another person's setup.

Speaking of improvements (didn't feel like opening a whole other thread) and carrying bigger loads, ha, now here's a nifty idea!

Reducing two major problems of handheld (pistol grip/dual handle) stabilizers... all the heavy load on your arms, creating muscle exhaustion and up/down bouncing movement. Not too shabby.

lwestfall got a reaction from webrunner5 in For those in love with the FULL FRAME look which system gets closest in 4K?
How about the 1.5x-crop a6300 with the 0.71x EF-to-E Metabones Ultra Speedbooster, giving 1.065x, basically full frame 4k with full-frame depth-of-field results on Canon glass? Plus the Speedbooster gives an extra stop of light and even increases effective lens resolution. But although the June firmware helped AF, but there are still AF issues with some lenses.
Looks like the a6300 (with its 6k-to-4k oversampling/full-sensor readout) delivers currently unbeatable resolution:

lwestfall reacted to Cubanito in Sony a6500 limited record time
"In an interesting update, there's a new menu option which changes when the over-heating warning icon appears: there's Standard or High options, the latter simply allowing the camera to keep operating even when it's getting hot, although protection will still kick-in to prevent any damage. When shooting with the earlier A6300, I found the body could get quite hot to touch, and revealingly Sony's engineers recommended using the A6500 on a tripod when the temperature warning had been adjusted - not to do with stabilisation, but because the body may become uncomfortably hot."

lwestfall reacted to BasiliskFilm in Sony Will Announce the A6500
I was assuming that I would need a gimbal for use with an A6300, now the sensor stabilised A6500 has come out I might hold off a bit. The good thing is a small camera can work with a cheaper, more compact gimbal. I fully acknowledge that RS and overheating are serious problems for some shooting styles, but the quality of the 4K image out of these cameras, and the potential for a speed boosted full frame image, makes it worth considering work arounds for the limitations surely?

lwestfall reacted to BasiliskFilm in Sony Will Announce the A6500
So apart from the overheating, the lack of 42 mp still files, and possibly a more user-friendly (though bulkier) form factor, the gap between the A6xxx series and A7Rii has narrowed considerably. For manual shooters, a focal reducer can get you the full frame look, and the 6K -> 4K S35 video mode on both bodies is probably very similar.
For those who can't afford an A7Rii, or the expensive full frame G lenses that add several thousand onto your investment, this could be an option to get comparable results.

lwestfall got a reaction from andrgl in 1DX Mk II video
Obviously the 1DX II blows the a6300 away in numerous other ways. I just didn't realize till recently the technical difference they have in resolution was so huge. Even with significant sharpening of the natively unsharpened 1DX II image, you can tell the 6k-to-4k oversampling of the a6300 still delivers so much more detail. It's a shame to see the notorious soft Canon demosaicing present even in the 1DX II where I thought Canon pulled out all the stops. And I wonder when anyone other than Sony (and Samsung with the NX1 which doesn't quite match the a6300) will offer that apparent revolution-for-4k-resolution feature of 6k-to-4k oversampling of full sensor readout... (and without overheating. )

lwestfall got a reaction from Michael Ma in My Review of the Zhiyun Crane 3-Axis Gimbal
I just got the Zhiyun Crane and am definitely impressed. It worked perfectly with my 70D + 10-18 IS. But I tried pushing the 1200g limits and was disappointed. My 70D + Sigma 18-35/1.8 Art = 755g + 811g = 1566g. If I'm extremely careful, it hangs in there and can pan, but walking with it just about always introduces the slight fast up & down bounce that someone else mentioned they got with the Sigma 50/1.4 Art. This was the same with and without the lens support. I will be trying other lenses on it. But I might not find the right one-handed low-light narrow-depth-of-field Dual pixel AF smooth gimbal setup until I get the Sigma 35/1.4 Art (150g lighter and 1.2" shorter) and/or the EOS M5 (only 455g, but you need the 110g EF to EF-M adapter). Unfortunately even when I can get a GH5 someday it won't lighten things up, considering the weights of GH4 + Metabones Speedbooster Ultra (569g + 172g = 741g). Sure would be nice to have a little beefier version of the Crane available since I'm not planning to step up to the bulky and imposing Shining, but for some people I can see the Shining (4kg limit) would be the answer. I'm still curious if the Crane would be any better with the 26650 batteries (and where to get them?).
