webrunner5 reacted to maxotics in Sony A7R III announced with 4K HDR
I really, seriously, for the life of me, don't get it. Canon maybe...Sony crippling their cameras? I can't see any real world difference between 10bit and 8bit in an 8bit space. I've tried. Please don't get angry with me, but for me 10bit is a sham. I don't look at the camera makers as giving me a better image, I look at them as marketing hokum. Whatever banding 10bit may eliminate in a clear blue sky is smoothed over by the time the image reaches the viewer, in the real world.
The achilles heal of these cameras, vs cinema cameras, is highlight roll-off.
So the question to me, is what would you rather have, HDR or a 10bit CODEC? Banding in a sky, shadows gone noisey -- I can deal with that. A face with a white blotch on it, no. It's horrible! For me, it's F-this camera time
10bit doesn't fix it because 10bit has nothing to do with dynamic range. Sure, you can shoot in S-LOG, but now you're sacrificing color detail. HDR, seems to me, might solve that problem. So why should Sony put out 10bit over HDR? It seems to me HDR is the real INNOVATION here (probably a type of dual ISO). If it works well, it can make a big real-world difference.
Yet, I believe it will also be marketing hokum! It's probably what they call 10bit now Still, we need to see what the camera will do.

webrunner5 reacted to Don Kotlos in Sony A7R III announced with 4K HDR
For me the A7rIII is everything that I wished from an A7rII upgrade. These are just the improvements on the video side:
Amazing AF from A9
Sgammut3.cine
better low light performance
lower rolling shutter
EVF from A9
Better ergonomics
At least double the battery life
S35/FF switch with a button!
Bright LCD during 4K recording
USB3.1 tranfers
Dual SD card
Improved FF quality
Improved IBIS
Proxy recording!
Personally I don't think there is any competition for Sony right now.

The biggest difference between these cameras and cinema cameras is battery life and storage. So now the A7R will last twice as long? It will have a USB port that can transfer 4K video as fast as a card reader? It has dual recording slots, FTP over wireless, proxy recording? 10fps silent mode shooting. If this camera camera out a few years ago the title of the post would be "Sony just killed the Canon C100"

This thing shits all over the D850 and will probably beat it at video. Where is all the hate coming from? GH5 is competing with the a7S line, but it cannot hold a photo candle to the a7R line. Leica is a niche product with a price to match. I guess you are all about the color science and even that is said to be improved on the a7RIII, so wait and see, this thing is impressive:

Hi Boygetslost
So what do you think after having it for a few months? Would love to hear your thoughts

webrunner5 reacted to Linus N in Improving GH5 colour - comparison with 5D3 RAW
Just tried this on some random GH5 footage I had laying around, color charts, drunk people in my couch, a client interview. All I can say from this extensive 3 minute test is that I really like this, thank you so much! Cleaned up skintones, made the rendition of clothing, furnitures, walls, wall art more realistic. I haven't shot on Canon for a long time as we use Sonys (FS7, a7SII) at work and I own a GH5 privately and this is yummy. Hat off for you, my good sir! Will make this a must have addition in my GH5 post workflow and test it more than these intense 3 minutes so far.

webrunner5 reacted to Dave Maze in Canon 1DC vs Canon 5D Mark IV
I have had mine for over a year now, and rented it back when it first came out for a documentary in haiti. I had to get insurance because it was so expensive at the time. Crazy how things change.
I think there is a lot to talk about with it. The Super35 mode is great for when you just need quick and easy, and the 4k on it is better than any of the other 4k dslrs from canon.

webrunner5 reacted to Andrew Reid in Canon 1DC vs Canon 5D Mark IV
I would go for the 1D C.
It's a better stills camera not just a better video camera.
The low-light is better as well, compared to the 5D Mark IV.
Battery life, hugely better.
Weather sealing, and build quality is better.
Burst rates... up to 14fps! Massive buffer.
Better AF.
Manual focus in video mode is the only drawback... Except it's not really. Manual focus is just fine.

webrunner5 reacted to mercer in Canon C200 or 1DX mkII for 4K 60fps
If I were Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji and Olympus, I would join up to destroy Panasonic for disrupting the entire prosumer market with 10bit video.
Now every other videographer, no matter their discipline or experience, believes they're getting ripped off if they don't get 10bit, even if they don't really need it.

Thank you so much for those kind words. Really means a lot! I'm happy to have helped you! Isn't the internet amazing? Haha
I believe you have read me well. A 1DX II really would suit me well since that form factor is what I prefer. I'm wanting to rent them both soon! May be doing some tests with the C200 in a few weeks

Freeman Dyson is a giant in the world of math and physics.
As for myself, I'm not Freeman Dyson, but I know a little about it from my science degree in mathematics (with almost a 2nd major in physics, plus I taught mathematical modeling to undergraduates at university for many years).
Thus I know more than enough to be highly skeptical about mathematical models being pushed for a political purpose!
I suppose many of heard of the famous saying: "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics!""
Well mathematical models can be misused and abused even worse than statistics can be!
However, I loved mathematical modeling, and it is an extremely important area of study, that has many very useful applications.
Just don't be ever taking them immediately at face value! Especially not in highly politically charged situations.

the wild places i grew up exploring have burnt. Some of the loveliest places in american wine country are burning and people are dying. Puerto Rico has been destroyed. New Orleans is half the size it was. Climate change is entirely real. People in my country are living it and dying it. There is no debate about it. I don't need a lecture from some ancient austrian economist in a dumb suit to know that the glacier i can see from my house is shrinking. i don't need a fucking documentary liberal or conservative to tell me what i can feel when i step outside, what 99% of scientists agree upon. this doc can go twist for all i care. and so can all these "debaters" enjoy your doom, you made it.

webrunner5 reacted to Bioskop.Inc in Iscorama 54 Van Diemen Mod
Yeah it does look nice - makes it smaller & the close focus sounds good, but for the price you could buy some high quality Diopters of differing strengths & still have some change from £2.5k (lots of change).
The only thing i'd worry about is needing to see samples of the image it produces with the close focus - deal breaker if you're flying blind on that.

webrunner5 reacted to Justin Bacle in AF 100 and Recorder PLUS ultimate low price 1080p/720p 3chip camcorders ?
I have an AF100 and like it a lot. It's my go to camera for events where I just need the most reliable camera with low recording media and battery needs.
You basically plug a Mic, an SD card and two batteries and you're good for an entire day of shooting.
That said, the image can be great, but you have to be very careful with you exposure and white balance. The DR of this camera is around 10-11 stops, and the codec is weak. You can plug an Atomos samurai and get better recording codec though. But you won't get the possibility to do so much in post (you just get 4:2:2 All-I instead of 4:2:0 AVCHD). The image you get is a bit soft, but you can still add a good amount of sharpness in post without destroying the image.
I got mine 2 years ago for 1300€ including a 7-14mm and 14-140mm. I think it is still a great all in one solution for the price, even to this day.
Here is one of the videos I shot, in poor lighting conditions, for a night event with the AF100. I was using Minolta MD glass.

webrunner5 reacted to EthanAlexander in Can we finally agree that 5D mk3 is the ultimate after so many years ? ..
Even with magic lanern:
No XLR, no EVF, poor live-view when recording raw (it's practically unusable in 3.5K), huge data rates, limited dynamic range...
Not to mention using raw on a paid shoot would be a risk most wouldn't (shouldn't) take. I've done it.. but I'm not into those risks anymore.
It's a great camera - Amazing image, built like a tank, pleasing skin tones. I may never sell mine.
But, ultimate? No way.
Also, please top approving your own posts. Every forum post in the history of the internet has been approved by the author of said post, or they wouldn't hit submit.

webrunner5 reacted to jax_rox in How to correctly expose Sony a7s II when using Pro Log and Pro Log S?
Use a waveform monitor. Or false colour can be used in a pinch if you have it set right. I know you'll need an external monitor for those. If you don't have them, you'll need to test.
Without knowing what you mean by your exposure being 'spot on', it's very difficult to advise.

webrunner5 reacted to mercer in One Camera - For Life?
I am sooo tempted to buy an a7s for its amazing lowlight 1080p and then some external 4K ProRes. But it’s still a few hundred away from a must buy for me. When I can get a like new one for $1000 or less, I’m on it.
With that being said, I would stick with my 5D3, unless I could afford a C200 or an Alexa Mini.
I’ve also been really impressed with a lot of the LS300 footage I’ve been seeing lately. I’m just waiting for an indie film to use that camera. I can’t believe nobody has yet. A friend of mine sent me this link and it looks amazing...

webrunner5 reacted to IronFilm in Nikon D850 vs everything
You don't always have the luxury of a high resolution screen. And focus peaking can help give you a bit more information than what a high res screwn would give you.
I was yesterday 1st AC on a short film with the GH5 and the DoP only had one monitor for his camera (& no HDMI pass through! So wouldn't even have mattered if we had a second). So I had to use the GH5 screen itself for pulling focus when it was on his shoulder.
Having focus peaking really helped save my butt when pulling focus on the Nikon 50mm f1.2! :-o
