Well, until Panasonic moves up to a larger sensor size, specifically full frame, one can argue they’re two steps behind Sony.

I will say Bloom’s example video, “The Telescope,” is some beautiful work and definitely shows what the camera can do...

Not the 5D3? Your footage was gorgeous! Some of the nicest ML Raw samples out there.

keeping the 5D3 for sure. full frame RAW for $1600 (bought a used one) is hard to beat. selling my BMCC and BMMCC.

Back in the day lots of filmmakers would shoot on older-tech film stocks 'kuz they were cheaper than the less grainy stuff.  Or, they used older film stocks because it gave them a look they were going for.  Not much different from deciding what sensor to use now-a-days.
The thing is, technology advancement blew through the financial barrier about a decade ago.  At this point anyone that's deep into wrangling the best IQ out of something...is probably just doing it to wrangle the best IQ out of something.  There's literally about a hundred consumer cameras for under 1K that will allow a "Filmmaker" to go out and capture awesome footage.
Hell, to support a school's volunteer filmmaking club, I just bought a GH1's for $95 and a Pentax f2.8 prime lens set 18mm, 24mm, and 50mm for $50.  A laptop to edit 1080 footage can be had for, what, $250?  If that's not the doors wide open, what is?  Someone with skill in the craft could make that look not only fine, but exceptional.  It will never look AS GOOD as a better camera in a good craftsman's hands, but people don't watch narratives to pick at the technical details.  Accomplish the goals of good storytelling with decent cinematography and you're on your way.
Love new gear stuff, but there's so much else to concentrate on, just can't get excited about it anymore.
One more anecdote:  I'm on a film festival committee, one of our selected films was shot on the GH5, another on the Arri.  Hand to god, while I can certainly tell the difference, the IQ is such a non-factor it's ridiculous.  The lighting in the GH5 film was creative, the Arri film lighting was boring...

Seriously though, Pentax primes are amazing... especially for what they go for.

I have seen that film in a theater, Tetro" by Francis Ford Coppola. It was really good, but I was not so fond of his different uses of I would assume softer, sharper lens, filters I don't know.
In people shots they were soft, on everything else it was really sharp. There was sudden changes of shots, and it just was, well crazy at times. I found it distracting as hell. Seemed like a rookie mistake. Not sure what he was thinking.
I know you are suppose to use softer lenses on women in particular, but to have sudden transitions, well not so good.

Cheaper, hell it cost More than a FS5, and only a grand less than a FS7! I think it is going to be as big a dud as the AF100! A good camera, but not a notable one.
And the GH5 with it's crap AF, and I would argue a even worse OOC look is going to go down as not so hot either. Panasonic better have this new GH5s the best thing since sliced bread or I think their goose is cooked on higher end cameras. Even the Varicam 35 isn't selling like they hoped.
Right now Panasonic does not have one camera I would buy new over the competition.

I like Amos Chapple (http://www.amoschapplephoto.com/) because (1) he shoots cheap, small m4/3 equipment (smaller bodies, some of the consumer glass) and  still seems to have great results, (2) his stories are very, very interesting and unusual, (3) he goes places I'd never go, (4) his images seem fresh, much of it is content I've never seen before.

I had the same thought about cameras being too good the other day when I was watching C200 raw.  The video was  a wedding trailer, and the closeups showed almost too much detail in makeup.

Hey guys, great posts in this thread. One thing, I actually DID put the shooter in the center of my piece, just in an overly calm way of wording. My own words from my original post: "With the GH5 a whole new crowd of videofans are doing their short seqences of slowmotion and IBIS demonstration..." Oh, how I love to cite myself:)
@Sage nice lensing and framing and great color out of your GH2. I like your emotion 2 montage, links into some great GH5 color moments here, awesome montage as well. I do think that too, that GH2 with the right lens choices and profile and WB has really nice color.
One thing, GH2 shooters always lead me to the most interesting material of pure camerawork: framing, lensing, color contrast- palette- and composition,  composition of objects, subject/object choice, camera movement and speed and point of view and distance, lighting. That is so to say what the GH5 lacks the most, this kind of library.
By the way, maybe a bit unexpected, a guess the camera game. I suggest without browsing his materail for an easy solution. I expect @mercer  to fall for some temptation of purchase again:)

Oh Boy I had one of them. A house dog at that! There were goobers on the ceiling, and pretty much everywhere else when he shook his head. Yikes!!
Brings back some good memories though, he was a sweet dog. He was a Chic magnet in the College town for my son I lived in when he walked him lol. Women loved to hug him! The Dog that is.
A friend of mine had one and it's name was Billy BoB. Fits them to a tee LoL.
Nice looking B&W you have there.

@mercer oh btw i meant to mention, as you know i had an rx10ii (briefly lol), but i like your idea with it, and tbh that was my thought too: shoot something in black and white with it. id shoot in slog, and if you want easiness in post a contrast lut and a little fine tuning should be fine. i graded some of that footage to b&w and got good results ??
edit: whoops i just read your last post ?

I can't come even close to producing work as good as the best DLSR videos from 2015, I think I'd do fine if I was given a D850!

Blu-ray all the way for me. I've made DCP's and quality exports for work, and I seem to be able to spot compression a mile away. I've always wished that there was an option in Netflix to load ahead on a video. Any time the compression crops up it yanks me out of the film and I have to pause to let it buffer. Prefer the perfect presentation to Blu-ray, and yes I've started buying UHD. I'm always chasing a higher quality image.

I am also a fan of BluRays. Films and Docs shot on 16mm look so nice on BluRay. Film grain can look pretty garbage when streamed.

@mercer exactly, profound analysis. It took cinegain digging into 6months old vimeo posts to find a decent GH5 video. I found the cinematographer with the GH2 on the first page with vimeosearch by date, just searching for GH2.
@Cinegain, first example is long, and seemingley milking the concept without offering much visual interest in doing so, 2min seems bloated to me.  Tonal gradation more nuanced in the hightlights than what typical GH2 videos show. It is  not offering cinematography but photography rather so, with all that slow and unspecific movement. Second video looks colorwise like osiris lut has been used. I have seen only super few GH5 videos that have wowed me due to the generic approach in all departments of cinematography, lack coming from users side.
Here is another nice one from the same  cinematographer. 36 seconds of well chosen angles, framing, subject distance, distinct choice and parts of movements. Even in slomo:) Also Shows great understanding of the basic graphic principles and works them to the best effect.

I would argue that things look too good with the newer cameras. Now I guess if you are doing a video in a hospital for learning surgical procedures, operations, or interviews you need it to be sharp as a tack, but for a movie look you might as well save your money and buy a Sony F3 or a C300, BMPCC, GH2, etc... Taking a GH5 and adding noise or grain to it seems, well seems silly.
But I can see how it is sort of a poor man's one size does it all camera. But calling it a Cine camera is not what I have seen out of it. A GH4, GH3 was not either.
To me the Only newer camera that looks good, no great is the Arri Alexa.

Obviously, the GH2 has a little bit of a head start but yes, there seems to be a different level of filmmaking that occurred 4-5 years ago compared to today.
I think it’s a combination of beliefs and methods that forced people to be creative with what they had, the limitations created aesthetic opportunities, but these limitations also kept the membership much smaller...
Now with the advancements, a lot more people have decided to give it a try. On eBay alone I have seen about 6 GH5s up for sale in the past month where the seller said they bought it because they decided they wanted to make music videos or short films but have since moved on to other interests.
When the tech becomes more important than the content, there will be an influx of mediocrity.
With that being said, I have seen a ton of nice GH5 work, but I’ve also seen a ton of nice t2i work and with all of the tech and visual enhancements of new cameras, I cannot say that the GH5 videos are better than the t2i or the GH1 videos I’ve seen.
Hell, look at Kendy Ty... his films have gotten worse since he moved on from the t2i. Other’s films have gotten better.
    Interesting post.

Really interesting that all these B&W films were at 720p and they look great. I think it adds to it more than takes away. Now if these were all in Color I think they all would suffer at 720p.
It is nice to know you can use a lesser camera in B&W and still project the feeling you want to achieve. Cheap thrills in a sense. Well done. Food for thought.
