  1. One more link to talk you into the C500 LoL. http://www.thehurlblog.com/cinematography-online-canon-c500-vs-film-camera-test/
  2. JVC LS300 is 8bit output also. Wouldn't a used Sony FS5 with the latest firmware tick all the boxes also? You can strip it down and use it on a Gimbal, use it shoulder mounted, a lot more versatility. And with FilmConvert you can make it look like any camera you want. Also the Red MX or Sony F3. Red is far from a run and gun camera for sure. Not that the F3 is a lot better. It is just the Sony F3 is so damn cheap for what you get. Unless you buy a Whole Red MX kit form someone I think I would pass. Bits and pieces for them are crazy expensive to add on. But the 4k on the Red is sort of future proofing itself more so than the F3. If had 6k I guess I would have to go with the Red MX or Sony FS5. I am not too big fan of the Sony FS700, Now if you need Slo Mo it IS the camera to buy. But it does tick all the boxes you want. Probably the best one trick pony available for the price. Not much it can't shoot. I have seen the 4k model for 4k lately. That is a bargain for what they can do. And to add a Canon EOS C500 4K Cinema Camera. They pop up at 5k once in awhile. B&H has them for 7k new. Older science but wow what a great look. http://www.thehurlblog.com/cinematography-online-red-epic-vs-canon-c500/ Wow no easy choices.
  3. I have heard a lot of negatives about Manfrotto gear as of late. I just bought a Manfrotto PIXI EVO Mini Tripod and within days the "c Clip" broke on it. Common problem I found out. Went down to Ace Hardware and bought like 4 new Clips for 65 cents. They are Way better quality than the stupid one that came with it. I mean how much money are they saving with a cheap clip. It cost them this customer for life I can tell you that. Probably the last one I am going to buy from them, ever. My older photo Manfrotto tripods you could kill a charging Bull Elephant with them, built that well. I have no clue why company's make cheap crap now and risk their reputation. Manfrotto was a top end product 20 years ago.
  4. Pretty bad performance on the Panny. Bad copy, who knows?
  5. Well I must admit that it got somewhat better the further it went but WAY to much camera movement. Try a Monopod at the least. Just Slow down a Lot on camera movements. But I like how you have come on here and hung it out as they say LoL! You picked one of the hardest types of content to shoot, sports. It Ain't easy as you can tell. But some of it you did was not that bad. It is very hard not to get excited at those type of events, especially if they are friends of yours! I think you could edit this down to about a 90 second video and it might come off pretty good if you really think it out.
  6. You really don't need long zooms when doing Video unless you are going to shoot Lions in Africa! Panasonic, Olympus cameras have a 2x crop factor on the lens you use. You Have to go really wide to use one well for video. And manual focus usually works better than auto most of the time. Low light is MFT weakness, so you need fast lenses to make them work. That is why most use a Speed Booster to help with that. There is Nothing really wrong with a GH4. Tons of great stuff have been made on them, and will continue to be made on them. But right now a ton of new stuff is coming out fast from every manufacture now that video has "caught on" LoL. Just having the latest and greatest really doesn't make anyone a great filmmaker, skill does that, and skill can be used on just about any camera made in this day and age to produce an acclaimed film. It is a fun hobby, an expensive one, but well worth it. You might even make a living doing it! Best advise is to is to shoot, shoot, shoot, and edit, edit, edit.
  7. Or even a Panasonic G7 is a great option until we see what the GH5 brings. The GH4 would have to be $750.00 or less before I would buy one now. They are a great camera no doubt. You really need an even wider lens than a 24-70mm when you figure in a 2x crop with MFT and it is even higher than that with the GH4 using 4K. Like a 2.3x crop factor. That ends up at 55mm on the wide side! Not terrible but..
  8. Cool Beans. Grats. Good thing it was not too windy that day!
  9. Well you could try to win the Lotto! With a DSLR you are Very limited to what you can adapt. And none of it is cheap. My Video DSLR days are done because of that very fact. I know there are a few Nikon to EF adapters around, so might luck out that way on the 1DXMk2. But no AF that I know of. Sort of defeats the purpose of the 1DX!
  10. Wow my thoughts exactly. the old KISS rule. Keep it simple stupid. The less you can screw up the less you screw up! #1 is the way you Should do it but a lot depends if you are shooting with fast primes or cheaper still camera zooms. Cheap camera, Cheap zooms, Cheap lights, OMG! WE all know there is no stead fast rule or we all would be famous. But going full manual does have a Lot of risks, meaning you can have Everything that can go wrong go wrong. The results are fantastic when it goes right, horrific if a couple of parameters are set wrong. That is why I always hated shooting with different cameras that you rent, drove me sort of crazy. They all have quirks and they do bite you in the ass at the worse time. Get used to a camera that has great low light ability, New C series Canons and switch to a Blackmagic camera Holly Crap. It does keep you on your toes. Interesting business.
  11. Wow really nice stuff. What does those end up at MP wise, 8mp?? Second one is Very sharp.
  12. Wow, that is food for thought! And you are right, no real good cheap way out on large cameras.
  13. Looks pretty nice, and the price is right!
  14. Yeah I have the moondoglabs one in the 37mm and it does NOT work with my Came TV 32 bit gimbal. Way to heavy to balance it. Bummer. I use it on my iPhone 6s Plus just using the camera stabilization or tripod mount it on my ALM mCAMLITE. It is well worth the money. Cheap thrills.
  15. I Really liked the intro on the first one. You did a great job on the mood with the lighting on the first one also. Maybe a bit too sharp for a horror movie LoL. But the coloring is spot on to me. Well done.
  16. I just came back from the Grand Canyon using a G7 and the stills I shot on full auto with it are pretty impressive. And the 4k Video is even more impressive! I even shot some of it using my 19x Fujinon ENG B4 lens. The reach on it is pretty unbelievable with the 2x extender on the lens and the 2x crop on the G7!! Helped a lot there. I think it worked out to be like a 34-620mm f3.6. Lens is a constant f1.8 so doubler hurts the f stop which you Have to use on m4/3 to cover the sensor. Lens is for 2/3 sensor. The lens also adds a bit of "grunge" which is good for a film look. It is no way as clear as even the cheap kit lens quality wise on the bigger sensor. But it works out great on videos. But no way you can handhold it, and it takes one heck of a good tripod and fluid head to keep it steady fullly extended. I even have to have a tripod lens support to help it. But it is really not that heavy of a lens as you would think for as crazy good they are. Parafocal and a constant f stop to boot. And I only paid 150 bucks for that one from Adorama. Cheap thrills. I took a lot of photos with my iPhone 6s plus and they were darn good, and 4k videos on it are no slouch either. The colors on it were spot on I think. Pansonic G7 were a little weaker color wise overall. But I do have it set a little flatter in the settings. All in all a pretty light setup to carry artound all day. I used the G7 with a 14-45mm kit lens a lot of the time. I think my copy is pretty sharp, and it is one of the sharpest kit lenses made for m4/3. Not good in low light but...
  17. I have the moondoglabs Anamorphic Lens. Not a telephoto lens but crazy good performance with it. But it cost 175 bucks so not too cheap. http://www.moondoglabs.com/. But it is probably the cheapest way to get a Anamorphic look. The iPhone 6s plus I use with it has a very impressive output with it in 4k. But with the lens on it I can not use my Came TV 32 bit 3 axis Gimbal because it is to heavy on the lens end to balance. Sucks because of that. So I have to use it tripod only or hand held which works pretty well amazingly. Not going to buy a larger Gimbal, too poor LoL. Zeiss has a set of iPhone lenses out also. But the are like 199 bucks each. great lens though. I agree the Moment ones for the money are probably the way to go if you use their case with them.
  18. I think anyone that is older has had some experience with the 79a' threw 79e' series Ikagami's and portable recorders. They were the thing to have until the I started using a Sony BVP-5 3CCD BetaCam Head with BVV-1A BetaCam VTR. All 550 lines of resolution! I think that thing with the big battery on it weighed like 22 pounds!! But they were pretty good at holding them steady at that weight. You had to warm up the camera for an hour or more before you could even use them to be calibrated. Man it produced a beautiful picture at the time though. The tape decks we had at the time weighed nearly 50 pounds each in the studio. We had one reporter that used to stutter at times when he got too excited, so we had to do a lot more re-takes with him. God I hated that holding that camera for what seemed like half an hour straight LoL. And he was good at running after people to get more dialog from them. That was a LOT of fun!! Wow good thing I was young, 30ish at the time. I think I have one arm longer and one leg shorter than the other because of all of that for years LoL. Wow those were the days. Man the money the stations spent was mind boggling at the the time to upgrade to that stuff. I have no clue how they could really afford it. It had to be like a 3 Million or more dollars easy. Heck each camera was over a 100k each. Studio cameras with the box Lenses were like 250k or more with the remote controls and the pedestals. And I have NO clue what the switchers cost then! Probably 250k each also. And the mobile trucks, Jesus if you had to ask, you could not afford it. Easy Million dollars each one. But the money like NBC spent in those days to cover the Olympics had to be mind boggling. It had to be a Billion dollars or more easy! NFL football was just as bad. Heck a Red camera seems cheap this day and age! Not!
  19. Yeah but I am 69 years old, and grew up in a way, with ENG cameras. So for me the size of a Ursa Mini is small! And I weigh 235 pounds, and a GH4 is sort of too small. So I guess the Ursa Mini is sort of like Goldilocks, just right for my size. If I had the money I would have all of them, but I need to make my gear pay it's way, so I want to go for a all a rounder. Having Raw is not the worse thing with owning a BM product if you are willing to up the ante on hard drives. They have become pretty cheap as of late. Now if you shoot 10 hour content a day well you are going with a GH4 Codec. I tend to shot 1 to 2 hour segments at a time, so I can back up, even delete some stuff if I need a second take. I would run a Red if I could afford it. You can choose what raw compression you need per assignment. A really big plus for using them at the moment. But they just kill you on Propitiatory stuff they sell you. The Camera I can afford, the other stuff no LoL.
  20. Yeah but with the Ursa Mini you don't have to spend a fortune on rigging it up. Plus you can go up to the 4.6 chip if you want. If the GH5 is 2,300ish I am going BM route.
  21. And from what I read both the EM1 MK II and the GH5 have the same sensor. So if Panasonic has the same readout speed, or better, I am sure the RS will be a lot less also on the GH5 than the GH4. Panasonic helped Olympus with the 4k side, and Olympus helped Panasonic with the IBIS side, and photo side. Says the Rumors! This sensor helps Oly with their 60fps photo thingy, and help Panny with the 6k Photo thingy. Both taking advantage on their strengths on photo and video respectably.
  22. I would not bet a lot that Nikon will even be in business 6 to 7 years from now if they don't do Something soon. Fuji and Sony are eating their lunch right now. They have nothing I am interested in any more. FF DSLR's are a dying breed. And why even buy a cropped camera anymore other than the D500, which few can afford with the lenses needed for it. 1" sensors are not much better than Smartphones anymore. Why bother. And 4k frame grabs from Panasonic are not helping the D5 or Canon 1DX ii sales much either. I would not want to be in Nikon's shoes in the near future.
  23. Nice post Cinegain! Yeah I too was hoping for a better form factor on the GH5. Surely they know not many still photo people buy GH cameras?? So why keep it the same way! I would pay more for a better body, I think lot of us would. Maybe not 3 grand, but 2 thousand ish sure. For 1900 bucks surely you can make a better form factor. This video stuff is taking off like a rocket right now. And Panny has been a leader for the lower end. Seems to me other than the JVC LS300 you stated, nothing really exciting is there. Panny listen up and fill that void LoL! But I guess this stuff is changing so fast they have no clue which way to go. The GH series has been a cash cow for them. Hard to give it up I guess.
  24. I maybe wrong but you have to have at least a 18.8 or so MP sensor to get 6000 x3000. So I don't know, only Panny knows I guess, and I am not sure they really know or they would have said what it was! I think they, Panny, had to say something now or people would have bought into others systems. This is about the dumbest roll out of sorts I have ever heard from a company. I get the feeling they are grabbing for straws themselves or hoping for a miracle. I am pretty sure I am not going to wait for it. I am not looking for a camera in 8 months, hoping it ships in 10 months, and maybe it is not even what I want. What if it still sort of sucks in low light, really has no more DR etc.. We would have to wait for tests to prove all of that. That could be a year from now. I am not waiting long I can tell you that without a LOT more info... This could be a dream camera on the cheap, but right now it is vaporware.
  25. I am lucky to add 37 + 44.6 let alone figure that out LoL. But yes, I see your point.
