With current camera sensitivity across all brands you wouldn't have to.  If the ambient light "floor" is decent for what you require, then you can concentrate on using small simple elements for moderate fill.  I do this often with my documentary production.  Every situation is different though.  And other shooters have different tastes in lighting.  Ironically,  I'm more of a minimalist/naturalist.  But knowing what's needed or might be needed is the main thing.

I used to be in a shitty bar band and I used to do video production for it as well.  Often I'd work with the venue to adjust lights on hand.  Without fail they were always positioned wrong and set to ridiculous angles.  With only a little tweaking I could usually improve it.  Assuming they tolerated my input and modifications.  The main thing was typically keeping the illumination variance under control and creating useful pools of light for the singer and band members.  The other big thing was to avoid direct key.  Anything straight on ruined the vibe.  The lighting had to still have some drama to it.

Very good response. I agree with your points. Nothing should ever be written in stone on lighting. You know and I know music videos are probably lit like a Christmas tree.  But we probably don't see it in the finial output, they are very good at their craft, or they can afford to hire someone who is..

That is true but it does get really annoying in a dark pub or club at a gig to even see someone using even a small light with the tiniest video camera.      It also annoys me when someone uses flash endlessly for stills too (and it often annoys the bands no end).       A few times I have shot alongside other photographers using flash almost every shot and sometimes the band would tell them to stop.     One has since upgraded his kit and now shoots without flash a lot more.     He also does video now too and (thankfully) without lights.

If I remember, next time I see someone with a video light at a gig, I will take a photo.

Well the big problem about using flash and lights, is that it changes the look of what you are trying to shoot. There is hardly any bar or concert in the world that has the band all lit up when you go see them. Bars are the worse hands down. But if you light it, it looks unnatural as heck.

Hey I am not against lights, and lighting. It does add drama, a scary effect, and compliment people, especially women's faces. But we now live in a new era, where we have cameras that Are good at shooting on low light. We don't always have to do the same stuff people did 50 years ago. They would not have done it always either if they had a Sony A7s then. Think outside of the box.

Plus we can't afford tons of lighting equipment, or the people skilled at using them. Now if you are doing a sit down interview, well yeah, you Need lighting.

  3. I think a lot of you are not really thinking this through. Sure they use lighting in movies. But hell guess what, the movies we go see have lighting rigs that that a f ing semi truck to get them there. 6,000 watt lights that take a generator to run them.

You are not going to light up half a city block with little piss ass LCD lights from Amazon we can afford! Get real.

  4. Well I am sort of a big fan of the A7s because I don't see a lot of situations where you can use f .9 and get anything in focus. I know on a m4/3 camera that is really f 1.8, but that is still some narrow ass DoF to play with.

So I think using a A7s in dark portions of a shoot IS a damn good option to have. Would I have it as my main camera all the time. Well, if I had enough money to have it as a "B", camera well no. But as your Only camera, I can think of a hell of a lot worse ones to have.

Now trying to cut it into a movie with a Gh4, GH5, well that would not be easy as hell I would admit. With a A6300, A6500 now that works.

As with all cameras the operator has to overcome the obstacles pertaining to their particular shoot....if you get paid to shoot, you're not asked to whine about it....you're asked to do something....it's your job as the expert to go away and figure out how....if you choose the GH5 for that job....figure out what you need....period...the trailer below was for a movie shot on a GH2 on 2 lenses....shot mostly handheld....with a measuring tape and a PIECE OF STRING tied between the operator and the actor!..most people I've been on sets with through the years never went to film school....they are there because they caught a break...are intelligent and resourceful....and people can stand to be around them... I know it depends on what you use the camera for...but if I was going to go down to shoot a shipwreck at 60 ft underwater....I would plan for that....I would not complain that the splashproof feature on the camera  is inadequate....if all you're capable of working with is an instimatic camera,...then start with that....this camera is very advanced and will take an investment in time....maybe months!....this is no more a toy than an Alexa or an F35 is....with one difference....for the everyday man, it is affordable and much more forgiving...this is a tool capable of professional work!...be a professional if you get paid to use it...

Spoken like a Old Man with experience. Well done sir, well done!  :glasses:

1:40 mark is what he is talking about the string on video below.

  6. Ah we All have a bad day at times. Makes us stronger I think. It was an unfortunate event, but I sure as heck am not going to loose any sleep over it.

This is too good of a Forum to have that effect us, even in the short term. I don't see any reason for you to feel responsible. It was what it was. I guess it was a learning experience, and  I welcome different opinions and thoughts.

But I guess as the old saying goes, Discussing Politics and Religion neatly Always leads to hut feelings. It is Taboo for a reason I guess. I hope we all move on one this because I consider a lot of people on here as friends, and that is something I have never had a lot of in my life.

So here's the video I promised. I tried to duplicate Max's AF scenario as best I could. None of these clips have been edited and none that I shot were left out. Everything you see is everything I shot. Very different results. What can I say? As I've said before, these results are extremely typical for everything I've shot thus far. I've never shot a single clip that even remotely resembles what Max got.

This is a 4K video, but it hasn't yet rendered at this point to a full 4K.

Holly crap, that is just awesome. No one could even begin to focus that fast in manual mode. Camera envy on my part. What lens, 12-35mm, 12-60mm?? The 14-140mm, no way? If so what version?

Just watched Max's video and to say I'm perplexed is as gross an understatement as I can imagine. I'm going to try that outdoor test he did with focusing on the car and then something in the distance. If you read the comments below the video, you'll see there are other GH5 owners, like myself, who also say theirs are very fast and very reliable and are also confused by his results. I'm almost inclined to go along with a couple of posters who think he has a problem with his body...camera body that is. ;)

In the interim, here's a 4K video I had shot on day one with the GH5 during a stormy day in N.Y. I turned off all the lights in the house and it was actually fairly dark, despite what a few angles show. This was using the relatively slow 14-140 lens (F3.5), so no assist from the lens. As I turn from a closeup of the flowers, to the living room, you'll get a better idea as to what the lighting actually looked like. At the time of this posting, the video was still only in HD on YouTube, so it needs more time to process to 4K.

I thought I saw one little spec of dust around the Bananas, but I was wrong LoL. The heck with the camera, I want your House! Nice video. Shows it's strengths for sure. Looks like yours works.

What i like about these guys is they are out there doing.... The art/production side will come while they are out there, they'll likely instinctively learn and improve composition, lighting etc

Well Jimmy said it  in a more mild manner than I was going to say is, That yes they are out doing it, and I am sitting here on my ass talking about getting out and Doing it LoL!

If I spent 1/50th of my time shooting as I do sitting on my ass looking at articles, and reviews, forums, hell I would have already won a Oscar for Cinema Photography!!

Yes you can learn at lot on the web, but the only real way to learn your camera is to get out and use it, screw it up, well change something, try again, and again, and again!

I stumbled on them while doing research on the beloved Leica R lenses on the REDUSER forums. A reviewer brought them up and said that they are just as good or better than the Leica R's. I did more research and discovered that some of the original Zeiss ZE and ZF lenses were using the exact same glass as some of the old Contax Zeiss glass. I found a set of Contax lenses on eBay for $300 each lens and I jumped on the opportunity and love them!

I have the 28mm 2.8, 35mm 2.8, 50mm 1.4, 85mm f2.8 and I really love them on the full frame sensor on my 1dc. I was DP for a shoot at my work and we exclusively used them for a project that was shot all C500

But I did great to see some damn nice Eye Candy shots of some Canon's.

Did I mention that holding half shutter while recording helps if the preview is slipping into grayscale? Squig, that's another advantage of keeping it at 2.7k - preview is smoother. If your delivery is 2048 x 858 then shooting resolution doesn't matter above, ooh let's say, 2.3k just to knock off that debayer softness... other than crop factor if course.

FWIW I saw an amazing short recently with a very unusual aspect ratio:

Pretty sure this ultra ultra scope ratio is achievable in 3.8k on the 5D3 now.

Wow, that is some just beautiful footage. Jesus that was good.

As an official grumpy old man, I support this grumpy man rant.

LMAO. Well I like to build my Own computers, I have for at least the last 25 years or more, and there is just very little gaming software for a Apple. But they make some damn good machines. But I just can't, well won't pay, nearly double the price for so damn many limitations.

Now their monitors, well those are nice. And like I said they make beautiful looking stuff. I can't argue about that point.

  13. Well I have been a pretty hard core gamer most of my life, and Apple computers just suck donkey, you know what, for doing gaming.

I have owned several desktop and laptop Apple computers. They are, were beautiful looking machines. But they always lacked the HP that "I" needed. But for a foolproof, even your mom can operate it, I will give that to Apple. But do I want to buy one now? No way in hell.

And Apple is just a damn whore for the iTunes, apps part of it. They try to get every damn penny they can out of you. And their stupid ass sign in shit every time you do anything is, well is A Pain in the ASS. And my iPhone has a damn update every week. Get your shit together to start with, not  use us as a Ginny Pig.

  14. Well my first wife that died of cancer was a total wiz at history, had almost total recall, and traveled all over the world to experience places first hand. She had lots of degrees in it, and her conclusion, my experience in real life, was that there are really only 2 reasons wars are ever started, is because of Money or Religion. And a hell of a lot of them were because of both causes. And the 3 "encounters" I was involved in were because of those 2 reasons like I stated above. You can go back nearly to the beginning of time, and examine history and those two reasons stand out like a sore thumb.

So what i am saying is Religion is more of a damn problem than a cure. Like it or not it is the evil that it is trying to rid the other evil of. Don't drink the Kool Aide I guess is what I am saying. I will not say anymore good or bad about this subject. It comes to no good in the end. The old, do not discuss Religion or Politics applies for a reason...

For some reasons I regularly treat others better than I treat myself. I'm pretty sure that's a fail.

Oh if we all could live a life where others feeling were paramount to our own, what a wonderful world it would be. I look back at my life then and now, and well, can't think of too many things I have done that has advanced society, unburdened others suffering, basically amounted to crap in the scheme of things.

But that is what 98% of most people have to write home to mother about in the end. Not much to be proud of other than maybe our very close family. Not too many Mother Theresa's in this world sad to say, but we all suffer the same fate. We are programed to look out for ourselves and those close to us we hopefully love. And it is what it is. Not going to change anytime soon sad to say, I doubt ever.

  15. Hmm, really?? If we are going to turn this in to some Bible Packing, finger waving, my religion is better than yours crap, I hope this does not continue.

I have been involved in a couple of stupid ass religious bullshit wars, and one all about the money, that I don't need to see anymore horseshit, ergo people dying, happening in my lifetime. People tend to die in those for, no we are right, no you are wrong stuff, oh and it is all in the name of "our" God, How f-ing convenient!.

Nobody really knows who is right or wrong. We may find that out when we die, but then I doubt even then. I tend to think the vast majority of religion is just a way to control humanity. No God would let shit happen that I have seen and done in the name of God and country!! And that continues to this day, and will continue, because like I have said, there is some EVIL ass people in this world, has been, and will be..

I go by the old saying ,treat others like You would like to be treated. That is all the damn "religion" you ever need.

But religions are are part of life all around the world, nothing wrong with videos that show Church's, crosses, people participating,. It is reality. Just don't make it a way to convert people to what you believe is all I am asking. I am not too big on any of it anymore.

Autofocus can be extremely helpful when you're running on a gimbal or filming solo for Vlogging.

Yeah Casey Neistat has done pretty well using AF!  Maybe we can get Tim Sewell with his Canon C100 mkII to shoot a wedding in AF with it.

He might be able to answer how good the AF Realy is?? I don't think he has had it too long now though.
