Absolutely.  It's so weird, of all things in the enthusiast/prosumer/motion picture world, that auto-focus is actually such a seemingly big issue to people all of a sudden.

It's an embarrassment of riches across all brands and somehow AF is a deal breaker?  Still not at all sure why folks aren't just okay with manually focusing their lenses like actual real-life camera operators that want to, you know, completely control capturing their images.

I suppose it's all part of the 21st century digital algorithm world.  Trust the machine to do the tricky work for us:  Spell check our grammar, remember that one actor that played that one part in that one movie, tell us all the cool stuff we need to buy, remember how to drive home, and focus our lenses.

F all that.  This new fangled dangled nonsense is getting my dander up, you damn whippersnappers.  The world needs more analog.  You can "pry my manual lenses from my cold dead hands!"  How about that?  I'm complaining about the complainers!

That said, I can see why AF handy, but I can't understand why anyone would trust it.  At least when focusing manually your gonna get a consistent result.

Yeah but not Everybody just uses a GH5 for Video only. Hell it does take Photographs doesn't it LoL. Would be nice to be able to shoot your cat, dogs, kids, wife, eh I guess with AF working!

I do a decent amount of Birding Photography and Video with Birds, and I can tell you I sure as hell am not going to MF with birds in flight too easy. Not at my age. They move around a lot even at a Zoo. Now if they are sitting in a tree, sure MF.

For 2000 bucks the AF had Better work, and work damn well. I can understand why people are pissed! There is no reason in 2017, with a camera this expensive, AF ought to suck. They ought to stop production until they get it fixed. This could be a disaster for Panasonic. We are not he only people in the world that by GH5 cameras.

Heck I use AF a times on my AF100A. My 14-140mm 3.5-5.6 II works pretty good at AF in high contrast situations. It is stupid not to use a tool that woks pretty well in certain circumstances.

I never owned a GH4, and don't have a GH5, but with the Sony A7's I have had, now they were easy and fast as heck to MF with, way better than any Panasonic, Olympus I have owned did or do.

I feel they oversharpened the 5d iii footage. The sharpness looks digital. But thats just personal.

But the 5d iii is a beast!

Hmm I thought the compairsion was done with a 5D mkIV to the C300? I know the way it is written is kind of goofy looking at the Top.  Magic Lantern 5d mlv, I didn't think there Was a ML for a 5D mk IV?? I am not sure now what the hell camera it is LoL.

I think you have to be right that it is a mkIII.

  3. I am sure the Alexa 65 is a lot more of a polished product. Arri does not just jump into anything! They have a Long track record, and it has always been quality before quantity. The Germans seem to just take stuff a Lot more serious than others do. They have been around the block a few times.

Shame they have such a high entry price for their products. I know you pay out the nose for quality, but it does seem a bit steep to me in this day and age. Though I don't imagine they sell as many as one would think to re coop their R&D costs.

    Interesting fact on Wiki,

    Controversy

In 2011, it was alleged that Michael Bravin, an executive of the US-based subsidiary Arri Inc., had unlawfully accessed RED's CEO Jim Jannard's email account. A suit was brought before a US court and in September 2011, Bravin entered a guilty plea.[48][49] Arri Inc. denied knowledge or gains from Bravin's actions,[50] and a separate lawsuit against the company was dropped as a result of an out-of-court settlement.[51]

The Panavision DXL is basically a re-housed Red Weapon 8k, and their new "70mm" lenses in fact cover just a bit larger than FF/Vistavision.  A few years ago they were developing a larger format camera with a 48x20.25mm sensor (52mm diagonal) along with a separate set of lenses to go with it, but issues associated with the custom sensor doomed that project.

Wow who would of ever thunk. Sort of lost some, well a lot of respect for Panavision! Why don't they call the god damn thing Red EW, for extra wide. Christ.

No wonder they don't have the balls to sell the F ing thing!

  5. Well Sony said they wanted to be number 2, and I think they may be number 1 if they come out with some killer stuff this year. I hope already at NAB!

Nikon needs to source their sensors from someone other than Sony or start producing their own.

I think it is Way too late for Nikon now. They better have the best products they have ever made this year, or they are done. You can't live on your past reputation like you use to in this day and age. Technology moves Way to fast for the old turds that are running Nikon now. It's a Shame it is looking like the end is near for them though. They just seem clueless as of late?

  6. Well I don't have a GH5, but I can tell you from all the Olympus, Panasonic cameras I have owned and it probably total close to 10 of them, AF-C sucked on all of them. Now AF-S was pretty good on all of them. That has been my experience. YMMV. My Olympus EM1 was hands down the best focusing m4/3 camera I ever owned. It was damn good. But not great at AF-C.

Premiere CC 2017. With CUDA-support enabled so the GPU does lots of work in both real time and exporting.

Yes you are right. GPU's now do most of the "heavy lifting" as they say now in this day and age. They have a CRAZY amount of cores in them, compared to a CPU. It pays to get the best GPU with the most GB on it you can afford with Video Editing. The CPU can be a lesser model and still not be as noticeable as a better GPU can.

Seems a frigo! (Portuguese word for fridge :-)

Is that a Canon Plotter? LOL

Is it the most powerful solution these days or any other suggestion?

    Gracias amigo!

No that is my Canon 16x19 photo printer. The Pro 100, they have the Pro 1000 out now to replace it. And no what I suggested was basically Last years most powerful, or close to it. A New Intel top of the line CPU, the i7 7700 cost around 350 Dollars. The top end MSI 1080 TI  8gb Video card is around, gulp 550 Dollars. There even is one that has 11gb on it. They cost 750 to 800 Dollars. Not sure that extra is really needed unless you make a living being a Colorist, Grader. The 1070, heck even the 1060 will probably be all you really need, if you don't make high end stuff all the time.

And like I said above, you really only need 16gb of memory for Video stuff. But the extra 16gb or more is really not that expensive in this day and age. But you will not see much gain with more like you would if you were gaming.

        não há de quê

  9. Well I went to Vimeo and I can see he edited all of it looks like. I thought the begining was a little too light, bright, overexposed, whatever you want to call it. But it was his grade not mine. SO he is happy and I am not.  But I did like it overall.

  10. Well I must admit I had to go to the old innerweb to remember what the Hell was a "Atomos Power Station". First product I ever seen that has no specs to offer on it's website! Interesting. I guess you are Suppose to guess how much more time you have with it for the amazing low price of??

This person contacted blackmagic about resolve not supporting gh5 10bit files and got this reply:

"You are correct, the 10 bit files recorded by the GH5 are not supported in the free release of Resolve.
As such you would require the Studio release in order to be able to import and work with these files.
It is worth noting that this is NOT a BUG IN THE APPLICATION.
I will mark this ticket as a feature request for the attention of the development team.
I cannot comment on the possibility of future features or give a timescale for the development of such features or updates.
In the mean time I would RECOMMEND TRANSCODING your files to a supported format such as ProRes or DNxHD."
    (Technical Support of Blackmagic Design).

God I love railroad tracks! They looked awesome in the last part of the video. But Was that a Log or the final grade?? I know you didn't shoot it.

And I am not surprised about the Free Resolve. They only do updates on it every year or so compared to the Real one you buy! But it is what I use, So...glad I didn't buy a GH5 then! Hell, I might to have...had...to...buy...a...Apple!! Jesus, I felt almost ill for a second or two! You know a Resolve Dongle and a Apple Dongle, sort of sounds well, obscene!  :frown:

I find it compelling because of my personal experiences.  I mean, my main gig throughout most of my career (and still if I'm being honest) was mid-budget corporate stuff.  So I did a bunch of things with decent gear, looked clean and slick, but was boring as heck.

And boring as heck Does pay the bills. So goes society, on average, pretty boring, hence the correlation!   Welcome to the work force. Hell it only last for years, and years, and years. :grimace:

And then the guy that made these commercials went on to run Apple computers.  It's, like, all the same reality distortion filed, man.

Ahh, maybe that is where the Bathrooms were at? I mean when you have to go you have to go! They were there a Long time as you know.

Yeah he sucked ass pretty bad for them to bring Back Steve Jobs, that is for sure. I just don't think I could have ever worked for Steve! There are a few people that you just want to punch in the mouth. I think he might have been one.

I have been known to fight my way in and out of a few situations, and Bars. :frown:

This is my first test of using the 6K 29,97p 3:2 ratio on the new GH5.
I'm happy with the results, please tell me what you think.
But I want to share my teething troubles working with the GH5.
1- The first question was which focal lens setting did I have to choose for the stabiliser. My prime lens is a 35mm, but did I have to include the 1,75x factor of the anamorphic, that is influencing only on the width ?
My first impression is that the internal stabiliser is not really the friend of anamorphic lens, some distortions or rolling shutter. There is some small moments in the movie that you can notice, but most of the strongest were unedited.
Because of the prime lens which is 35mm, and maybe the wildest I can use with my baby Hypergonar anamorphic lens, I had to zoom in the image sometimes, when it's in movement for example, to avoid moving vignetting in the frame. I did up to 17%.
2- the H265 codec that is used for the 6K mode
I had problems editing the 6K mode video. I have Premiere CC2017, but even when it downloads the H265 / HEVC codec, I couldn't really import the original files. Some of them were working, but most of them had strange result on the timeline with green colors. And not to mention the lag with playing the video, on Premiere or VLC.
I test it on two different iMac, mine that is a end 2012 with 24 Go of RAM, and at the university that is a 5k iMac with 8 Go.
So I transcoded the video with Handbrake, which surprisingly accept the 5184*3486 with H264 5.2 level. Then I decided to export directly in anamorphic without the black bars, in 5184*1976, then doing a same dimension sequence in Premiere.
Badfully I couldn't export the same dimension when I finished my edit on Premiere, so I did it in the maximum that my version of Premiere accept at my home : 4K (4096 maximum on the width).
When I will find the solution, I will export it in its original dimension 5184*1976.
Having troubles with a new camera and a "new codec" and new dimension "6k" is not new for me and I accept it :) I remember when a long time ago when I bought the GH1 I had to switch from Final Cut Pro 7 to Premiere to be able to edit the H264 clips directly on the timeline.
Thanks for watching the movie and do not hesitate giving me your opinion and your experience with editing 6K material from this new beast named GH5 !
    GH5 6K 5184*3486 3:2 29,97p export to 4k 29,97p anamorphic 4096*1560
prime lens : Qioptiq 35mm f1.6 wide open most of the time
anamorphic lens : baby Hypergonar 1.75x
focus module : SLR Magic Rangefinder Imperial
    ND filters : Hoya 32x, 4x and 2x
slight black and white levels / no color correction
cropping due to vigneting of the anamorphic due to the stabiliser from 0 to 17%
Thanks to Virgil for his GH5

I think it looks pretty awesome until you Pan the camera, and then I am ready to grab a Barf Bag! Yikes. I even liked the music a lot.

Buy a hell of a tripod, take off the Pan handle, and throw it away. Problem solved. At least for now.

Well, his antics were ridiculous, but I think he was perfectly sane and just having a lot of silly fun at his audience's expense.  He was so far ahead of the curve with wrastlin', for instance, it's quite amazing.  Still, to this day, the best heel ever.

For some reason I think you are a Pee-wee Herman fan also!!  :grimace:  You don't hang out in the front row of movie theaters do you, own a bicycle??
