Pretty honest appraisal of the camera at its current state. They say full hdmi for production is a big deal but that image still suffers from magenta and cyan macroblocking in V-log at 10bit. Hopefully, the summer firmware takes full advantage of the 10bit and sorts this out or else besides the 4k 60p is this camera worth twice the cost of the g85?

Wow the audio on the bigger guy in the stripped shirt, well what can I say. Total fail. What the hell.

I shot this with the Nikon D5200 three years ago. Mostly, I simply can't achieve the same pleasant and warm image with my GX80. If only Nikon had similar specifications to Lumix GH5 (stabilization, bitrate, 10bit, etc.), it would be a very good camera for non cinematic cases.

You new video on Vimeo is just, well about as well done as it can be done! I really enjoyed it. I guess because I am 70 I related to it LoL.  :grimace:

Isn't it a hybrid system with phase detect AF points on the sensor and contrast detect too?

I don't see how that can compete with Dual Pixel AF.

Even if it is faster for single shot AF in stills mode (with Sony's lenses only) - you have far less information from that kind of autofocus system.

It won't be as good at object tracking in video mode. The sensor has to run at 24fps which means the read out is too slow to get the AF information off the chip for fast and reliable results.

With DPAF every pixel gives AF information to the lens and processor... Millions of them.

    Sony should move to DPAF.

I would surely think Canon has a Patent on the DPAF thingy?

I used to take my 500CM to weddings too, and once took a Mamiya super 23, but there is no market for that where i live, and its not practical for most types of weddings.

Well I guess for 150 years film seemed to work for weddings LoL. I know I shot a lot of them with a Hassy and 3 lenses. I am sure the new digital ones can look better. But you end up with 1,000 shots, not the say 100 to 120 I used to shoot a wedding with. I don't have a clue what you could even shoot 1,000 shots of??

Well since there is no physical shutter it could be decades.     It is just turning it on and off electronically.       Some will probably break after the warranty runs out and other will last until the first pro uses it in the rain and others will outlive most of us.

Sony has a video about this (can not remember where) and how with no mirror and no shutter there is much less to break.

Yeah I just figured that out. Learn something new everyday. But it sort of leads to more Rolling Shutter doesn't a Electronic shutter?

  5. 8 minutes ago, noone said:

Seems to me that it doesn't shoot faster than 5fps with the mechanical shutter but it doesn't need to use that very often at all.

I wonder what is the life of the Electronic shutter??  20fps would eat up a shutter pretty quick if you were a Birder, Sports Photog. I guess it would be the curtain that would fail first?

Hmm looking it up, I guess a Electronic shutter Has no moving parts. DuH!

'Current EOS 5D Mark IV camera owners can have the Canon Log feature upgrade installed for $99 at any of the Canon service centers across the U.S. starting in July.'

    WTF??

Looks like Canon have noted Panasonic's "we'll send you it in the mail" approach to log upgrades and gone "Nah, fuck that....lets go utterly retro and make them actually physically bring the camera to us to have it done".

Strikes me as a bit suspicious that you have to take it to them. Is this their sneaky way of getting a firmware and hardware mod on that locks Magic Lantern out of it permanently thereby ensuring no one gets a free ride from buying future Canon cameras whilst simultaneously making them $99 a time for the upgrade and saving them that darn $2.99 on postage into the bargain? Fiendish if so.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Knocks ML out of the game on it, at least for awhile.

Unfortunately, resting on the gear is becoming more and more prevalent as its getting increasingly difficult to afford to replace it.

We can take images today that we couldn't have taken 10 years ago without the technology but I'm not sure its the case to say thats the case from, say, 3 or 4 years ago.

The last eyebrow raising lens that came out for sport was Canon's 200-400f4 with the switchable 1.4TC. Its an absolutely fantastic lens and for quite a number of Nikon shooters that I worked alongside who were at an upgrade point, that lens and the 1Dx which meant Canon had caught up low light wise tipped them into switching over. But that was 4 years ago now and nothing has really come along since that anyone has really gone "yep, game changer. That'll make my images better".

So, as we are on this plateau and money is tight, people are going to sit tight as they've got bigger challenges than being able to get the right images with what they have. The images are the least of the problems!

The opportunity is with people like me who are approaching a crossroads as there isn't enough gaffa tape left to hold their gear together and the prospect of spending £12-15K on a body and lens isn't hard to stomach both financially and emotionally!

Thats why I think they've made a bit of misstep here because its not cheap enough and the rest of the system just isn't there yet.

Far from forcing Nikon and Canon's hand into an instant panic response as they presumably thought would happen, they've probably bought them more time by coming in at this price and without the rest of the eco-system to go with it. Having to use adapters even to use their own brand of lens and relying on other manufacturers to produce adapters that will let you possibly use Canon lenses more slowly and maybe without being able to use TCs ? Its not even bringing a gun to a knife fight to be honest. It just reminds me of Neville Chamberlain on the steps of that plane waving that piece of paper that guaranteed peace in our time. Only this time, its a spec sheet.

And this lukewarm reaction to it is coming from me, someone who is mad enough to be actually actively pursuing using compromised mirrorless systems for shooting sport professionally! Imagine what the cynical ones amongst my brethren think about it.

But as I keep saying, though, I bet it will be a fine camera.

Oh I am not saying everyone that shoots Canon and Nikon is going to switch, far from it. But if you are just getting into doing sports I think you have to give this camera a damn hard look. A DSLR can not do what Sony has just done here no matter how hard Canon, Nikon tries. This camera is the future, and Canon has to come out with a mirrorless camera to compete with it.

And Sony now has a huge lead over them, and they will push harder and harder on Canon. I think Nikon is finished sad to say. They are not financially set to build one R&D wise, or manufacturing wise. Plus you know and I know this A9 will be able to shoot with Canon EOS lenses nearly as well as on a Canon body just like the A7r mkII can, maybe even better who knows yet.

If you own the top Canon, Nikon bodies you can no longer say you have the best as of yesterday. You have just lost that edge you had 2 days ago.

I beg to differ, i shoot weddings, and the guys i 'worship' and really like to look at their work still use the D700, working hard gets you a long way, having the lastest and best gear isn't that important, most people tend to use what they are more confortable with and that allows them to focus on other matters besides the technical ones.

Weddings are a bit different than covering the Summer Olympics. I doubt their D700, which is a fine camera, works out that well for sports. But very few people shoot weddings And sports.  :grimace:

I have a friend that still shoots weddings on film with his Hassy.  Mostly in B&W. He makes more money than the digital guys around him. But he is a rare bird.

A couple of years ago I described what Sony could do to make a real PRO FF mirrorless. An A9 24MP FF E-mount, high frame rate burst with a bigger form factor, no overheating and bigger battery but I thought Sony would put an articulated screen and touch screen as well. That what made sense to go after Canikon and it seems that that's what they did.

"One that could have around 24MP with fast readout that could do both 4K in Full Frame and 1:1 pixel 4K in APS-C/Super 35 mode. Not to mention great slow motion and burst frame rate."

"The A9 will pack everything Sony can, the A7 family was just a study case and preparation because the plan was to make the A9 go against the big boys, Canon 1DX and Nikon D5 but doing so in a Sony fashion, full of big technological advancements."

"I wonder how much will this A9 cost, maybe with the grip it will be at least $5000. Another interesting point is if Sony will pack advanced video feats in this camera."

"There are two ways to look at the A9, one is that the A9 is a natural evolution of the A7 series but for me, I think that the A7 cameras existed so the A9 could exist. It’s like they used the A7 to fund the R&D of the A9, but they needed time and enough technological advancement to pull that off after the A-mount experience failed and also to make it worth announcing against Canikon’s big boys.

I also think that this is why they haven’t made a bigger form factor for the A7 and I’ve said before, when I say bigger, I’m not saying DSLR-like, simply a bit bigger would do. Enough so overheating is no longer an issue and the camera doesn’t have any form factor compromise, for me, overheating has become a way to separate and justify bigger and more expensive cameras."

That is a damn good summation of what they probably did have in mind in the long run. Food for thought.

If your livelihood depends on the absolute best gear, than maybe you are doing something wrong. Don't get me wrong, having adequate gear is important, but it doesn't solve everything. If you haven't got a good eye its not the latest camera that's gonna save your ass.

I made a living doing Video, Photography for a Long time. I did it in a time when technology didn't change very fast, especially on the Photo side. So to be successful I worked harder, smarter than the next guy. And you have to do that today, but you also have the latest and greatest gear or a person like I was will take your job. That is all I am saying, push hard, and buy the best gear you can, that is the Only way you are going to last 40 years doing it in this day and age. There are plenty of replies on this thread that show how few of these jobs are even left! I don't think you can rest of your Laurels, or gear anymore like you could 10 years ago.

Whats the big deal? Canon 1DX MK II does 16 fps with live view, and it works great.        Are sports photographers going to switch over four frames a second?

For how many frames, and how fast can it upload to a computer? And that 4fps might be the shot you miss and it gets. Why do we need any camera better than the Old Nikon F5 was? Because they make better and better cameras, and I guess this Sony IS a better camera LoL. If your livelihood depends on a camera I would be buying the Sony.

Hmm, I thought nobody here liked the 'video look'. That clip was very nice, but it surely had the video look. ;)

Well I don't think Any camera that shots 4k video and above, can have anything but sort of a Video Look. There is too much detail in it, which is a good thing. But I do like the clarity, the cleanliness of it to be honest. Sort of like seeing a series of Medium Format camera photos. Like the 6k Photo Mode in the GH5. You are really seeing a bunch of Photos, sure is not going to look like film does. I guess you could dumb it down with a LuT, kind of what Arri does I guess to get a Film look in camera, but you have to admit is was impressive. As far as I know Film is only around 6mp where 4k is 8.3mp, so it Can't look worse.

That video looks like when I had my Cataracts taken off when I was 60. Jesus it was the cartoonish colors and sharpness I remember having when I was a little kid. First I had seen that in 50 years. It was like a miracle. And that camera looks like a miracle also LoL.

Are ad hominem attacks all you can do?

Well there are people that work their ass off and go for the best and latest stuff, or just keep using the same old stuff. It is your job that is in Peril, not mine, I worked my ass off and made it happen, as I am sure many have on here. Maybe you have too. But you seem to be stuck in the past, and I can't see that being a great thing moving forward. The Gators are Always chomping at your ass in a business like I was in , and I guess you are in. There is not many jobs to be had in it. And now less and less every day.

This camera is the future like it or not. And Canon, Nikon will Not be able to respond to it quick enough. If I was still working this camera would have been on Pre Order Yesterday, along with the slow ass, to you, 100-400mm lens!

This camera and this lens Will make you money. It will be better than the guy down the street. So it will be you or them. and you will Win. That is what it is and was about, you win, piss on the other guy. That is what puts bread on the table! Nobody remembers the guy that came in second.

And yeah I am a old crusty bastard, but I was a young crusty bastard that took a lot of peoples jobs. You have to be aggressive in this business or some young crusty bastard will be taking your job. Even if you work for yourself you have to be better than the last guy they used or, well, you know the outcome. There are a lot of people that want to break into the business, and you have to be better than they are, or you lose.

Well as a lot of you know I have my late night rant, and this is it for today LoL. Be good, and get better, or at least try.

Most definitely. That glow in the middle is rather distracting though. Cute bowtie, is that EL wire?

Nice slinging of insults. I'm just echoing what my sports shooting (the target demo) compatriots use and their experiences. If you think Sony's sensor is so superior that it'll offer a 5-stop advantage over what is that in the D5 and 1DX, you're mistaken.

Well I guess you are one of the people I am talking about.  If you think I would buy a Canon or a Nikon over this camera to make a living with in your "business", well. You will be just like them, all doing the same shit, and loosing their jobs like many before them have.

This camera is just a halo product.  Not many will be sold.  Sony probably knows this and just wanted to make the best photo journalist camera that they can.

For now, my piggy bank is safe.....

I would agree with this. It is not for everyone. Just people that have super tight deadlines in the Sports and Political shooter jobs partially. I can see White House interviews demanding this camera to be used. Those 50 cameras clicking like hell has to be a Big Ass Distraction. Video cameras, No Problem, quite as heck.

Even in a UEFA Category 1 stadium ISO 3200 or 6400 is needed with a f/2.8 lens sometimes. The target group of this camera will disagree on your dismissal of super fast lenses.

Man I am old and I see the future. Some of you young guys come off as dumb as shit! Jesus! I am serious! Do any of you make a freaking living doing this stuff like I did?? I mean to put food on the table, pay the house payment, and all that goes with it, put gas in the cars, make you wife happy, etc., etc.?

You take what is out there and make a living with it. You don't piss and moan. Use this camera to make money. How hard is that to do?

Yeah we are all going to go out and buy a F ing 600mm f2.8 lens that is 2 foot long and weighs 15 pounds. Those days are done. I owned crazy shit like that. We HAD to buy it. You don't now with cameras that shoot 200,000 ISO! You young guys are Blessed what is out there to buy now.

That "target group" is who helped developed this camera and the 100-400mm lens! The Live Feed video showed Pro shooters that worked with Sony on it.

(Photo)journalists don't care about the unrealistic phantasy or parallel universe of "enthusiasts". Dreaming around doesn't make profit. Only sharp photos/1080p footage with decent compositon and unique selling points - ready to send and immediately published - are profitable. It's all about capture the moment - and publish it, as fast as you can. Neither place nor time for dreaming or tweaking around... ;)

Just try to find some reliable (not lunatic) infos about bitrates and quality requirements for US- or European broadcasting, relevant for photo- and video journalists. You'll be very surprized: there is no 4K 60fps. Just try to quit a phantasy world and dive for some moments in reality...

This camera is NOT meant for Us to buy. It is a Wedding, Photojournalist camera meant to upload data from the field to some office, hell half way around the world. That is the reason for the Ethernet port.

You can only move so much data, in most places sad to say quickly, and that is why this camera will kill Canon and Nikon top offerings. Sony just hit a total Home run on this camera. Hell even the Paparazzi will buy this in droves!

No way will that ISO be suitable for pro work. At the end of the day even with the best Nikon/Canon a f/2.8 lens is still needed when shooting sport in a stadium at night. Sony doesn't have any superteles unlike Nikon and Canon.

This camera is basically a A7s MkII on steroids! In this day and age you can shoot higher ISO's than you ever imagined. Why is everyone hung up on not shooting above ISO 800?? What the hell! This camera can do just that, shoot high ISO's. You really don't need super fast lenses anymore? Canon and Nikon, as of today, just sucked ASS big time. Game on!!

I hate changing systems, but you have to decide for a camera you will actually shoot something with and not what "might get released in 6 months time".

Well the A9 is shipping in May, not that long away.
