Dave Maze got a reaction from mercer in Any love for the Canon EOS M5?
I'm sure you would love the M5 or M6. The image is quite noisy. I'm not sure why but it is. I just picked up an 80D personally and so far am really happy with it as I already own a Canon1DC that I use for higher end projects.
Don't worry. No scripture in this one.

Dave Maze reacted to mercer in The Canon C200 is here and its a bomb!
Give me the chance, I could.
Damn at $9000 this was a great camera, at $7500... shit. Maybe Canon can no longer fit any more of their heads up their asses. It almost seems to good to be true.

Dave Maze got a reaction from Dan Wake in Which handheld gimbal should I get for a6500?
I think the DJI Ronin M is your best all around gimbal for the price. You could easily have a 7D on there and put a monitor on the handles so you can check your focus manually.

Ya you totally can. I've been shooting full manual for years now on MoVIs. Having good AF is great but not needed.

It's hard to beat the Crane and the a6500 for a relatively affordable and compact stabilized autofocus high-detail rig. (Which has never overheated for me with the high-temp setting on - I just ignore the warning icon.) And yes, your setup will work. My similarly hefty and jerry-rigged Zhiyun Crane V1 setup actually balances and articulates quite well, even with a Breakthrough X4 ND 6-stop ND filter and the lens hood on that hefty 18-35/1.8 lens and with my Church Audio Ugly 2 Preamp and CA-14 Cardioid Mics mounted on top of my a6500 with 3M Extreme Mounting Tape. With the Arca Swiss plate under my a6500 it's easy to switch between my RRS QR tripod mount QR and the gimbal's SunwayFoto DDC-60LR QR Clamp, and I like keeping a Cullmann 50081 Magnesit Copter Multi-Tripod at the base for setting the gimbal down or using it as a little boom. I just hooked my recently obtained USB cable up too, and it's nice to have smooth Clear Image Zoom and Record controls handy. I too have thought of attaching a SmallHD Focus (and my LED light panel) to the handle. Thanks for the idea for that clamp arm.

Why wouldn't you just mount the monitor on the handles and use a thin hdmi cable... also the mic...

Just curious, why do you want the a6500? I had it back in January and although it's a great camera, I got the dreaded overheating warning in 45 degree weather. It never shut off, but it was too much of a red flag for me. Did you know the Zhyiun Crane can carry the weight of the 5D3... so I assume it would work with the 5D4 as well... just saying.

Dave Maze got a reaction from mercer in Gh5 or 5d mk iv?
I think the new Tamron 10-24 would be a great "16-35mm" equivalent as well with the 5D IV. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1317273-REG/tamron_afb023c_700_10_24mm_f_3_5_4_5_di_ii.html
Pair that with a sigma 18-35mm and you have a really solid kit shooting a high bit rate 4k.
I have found a very significant different in my MJPG 4k because of that 4:2:2 codec. Its great...once you transcode it...
Bro, I LOVE your stuff here. Amazing.
It's unfortunate to me that the 1DC isnt as widely used. If people just changed their thinking of it to a proper CINEMA camera, like an URSA mini, Alexa, or RED...they wouldnt be complaining about the higher bit rate recording or lack of AF.
Knock, knock was 100% shot on the 1DC. You can see it on Hulu I think right now.

Dave Maze got a reaction from Dunjoye in Gh5 or 5d mk iv?
I literally have the ability to sell my 1DC and accessories and buy a 5D IV today. I would not do it. The 1DC has a mojo to it that is sorta indescribable. A 24-105 on it looks amazing even at F4 because of the full frameish 4k.
One thing people fail to mention is the lack of cut off you get with the 1DC AND the really sharp and really high quality Super35 mode. I've shot super35 mode for times when 4k isn't needed and it holds up better than our C100 because of the better sensor.
You can buy them at a steal today on the used market.
I always use a monitor or evf tho and that kinda sucks but it's worth the trade off.
I basically pretend that the 1DC is like an Arri Alexa Mini or RED camera and it suits my needs well. No AF for video but amazing 4k.

Dave Maze got a reaction from omar in Gh5 or 5d mk iv?
Sorry to de rail your question. Really depends on what your needs are. Sounds like you're a Canon fanboy so I'd say stick with Canon. The 5D IV has really nice 1080p at full frame with the AF. The MJPG isn't as much of a pain as people make it out to be. It's ONLY one small step of converting your footage. I own a 1DC and strategically plan when to convert to ProRes and go watch a show on Netflix or YouTube while it goes
As soon as it's done I'm so happy with the color and the image quality.
By the way I convert to 4k ProRes LT with a low bitrate. It cuts my original file sizes by 1/3 and it plays on my Mac like butter. Super smooth and easy to edit natively off an external hard drive on my MacBook Pro and iMac

Yea true. No matter how many times I try to leave canon I end up staying because of that wonderful image. Canon colors are just so juicy! Lol
So hoping the c200 will be a game changer!

C200 will more than likely have dual pixel autofocus, built in ND, flip out screen, compressed 4k, canon colors for the same or less price of a 1DX II. Seems like the perfect compromise to me.

Dave Maze got a reaction from Orangenz in Sony A7S Mark 3 - What to expect
I was just at the Sony press release and spoke to a Sony Rep. there was literally nothing interesting at the press release. I told the rep I was hoping for a Sony a9s and he asked me why? I told him it's because I want Slog and better video features. He then asked me "why why don't you just get an a7S II?" I said I want phase detect autofocus and the better battery. He then said "well you're going to have to wait a long time."
conclusion:
nothing new here. Looks like we will wait at least another 6 months before we see anything.
At least I got a free cookie.

Says Kodak or Nokia...
But not releasing new camera often means the camera doesn't depreciate fast, so good for us camera buyer in a way

don't you love it when you can say "told ya so"?! Cheers Dave, hope this is going to be my next camera.
I hate to be an early adaptor, but I am waiting for a C100markII replacement for more than a year now. I just can't wait anymore!

If true, probably is, this is great news for us. Pushes the industry to move on, not sit on their laurels like they say. Also will be lots of cheap used C100 mkII's for us to buy, Cool!

I was until I heard the rolling shutter was really bad. Kind of a bummer.
I predict the "C200" will compete with the FS5, so 1080p/10 bit, 4k/8 bit. Of course the Canon will look miles ahead of the FS5 because of the color...

Yep, and still it could be too expensive if it is indeed aimed at the C100 MKII/ FS5 crowd. Unless we see some extra features like high framerates and so on, I doubt the Varicam badge is incentive enough. For that price you are getting close to the FS7 or FS5 with Raw recording... not to mention the gap with the C100 or a rumoured C200.

Dave Maze reacted to deezid in Improving GH5 colour - comparison with 5D3 RAW
Thanks @hyalinejim
I finally think about considering the GH5 again. These don't look terrible and oversharpened and some further colorgrading and filtering leads to really nice results (with good skintones actually).

Dave Maze reacted to DBounce in 5D mark IV. Is it just a baby 1DX II?
I think the logical upgrade to a 1DC is the 1DMKii. The two handle the same. All lenses are native. If you are comfortable with the 1DC you will be at home with the 1DXMKii. I also suspect it will not be made obsolete every six months like Sony cameras. So it should retain reasonable value. If you can't get the job done with a 1DXMKii, then it's time to consider refining your skills.
