I noticed something strange with this charger during a recent trip to shoot. The batteries charged a lot faster (about two to three times) when plugged into my laptop than when it was plugged straight into a wall plug.

    Good news, bad news.

Good news is that I have learned a lot about the srp( samsung reconfigureable processor) architecture. Bad news. It is very very very very complicated. Machine compiled c into binary. Unknown yet when it is loaded into the firmware and if the .cpp files that are listed are infact that, or just other hard ware controls

So the srp is like an fpga in the way you can change what it does on the fly. It differs in the way that it uses VLIW instead of bits to do its magic.
Reverse engineering the binary into something workable.. is possible, but time will tell if and how much can be changed. The plus side of a simple isp changing values in softwear can do something like what the gh2 hack did. The downside being you are stuck with the hardware.
The plus side of the srp implementation.. Building a custom algorithm to..exchange the hevc codec with something else.. Could be possible. Unknown yet if the nr is a part of this or just a software implementation.

Also if the rumors were true about the ml guys approaching samsung, this would be why it didnt happen. They dont release the srp compiler. One instance of them giving access to it at the SAIT school in Korea is all I could find. very very proprietary.

But the dream for me of having a cheap 14bit 6.5k red competitor is what keeps me going. The confirmation of the UHS-II bus sweetens the deal. Going to investigate the possibility of a SD-SATA converter.. I wouldnt mind having a 1tb ssd attached to the back of the camera.

TL:DR This camera is complex and things are not getting easier but still progression is being made.

Yes you can use Luts in Photoshop.
When you open a raw in Photoshop you will get the ACR window. At the bottom it will say "Adobe RGB (1998), 8bit, etc..." click on this. Now select 16bit, and also click "Open in Photoshop as Smart Objects".
This simple step will give you the best quality and let you do RAW adjustments after opening the file in PS (just double click on the thumbnail on the layer window).
Now you can make an Adjustment layer called "Color Lookup" which will let you select a lut. (you can do this without the first step)

NX1 feels like the better bang for your buck unless you shoot a lot of nightclub stuff or wedding receptions.  Or you could simply invest in faster glass.

Get the 80D, Andrew did a lovely preview about it
Seriously, I wouldn't invest in the NX1. Not because of the lack of native lens but the other way around. Looks like Samsung is dropping the camera business and I don't see the point of investing in a lens mount that won't fit in any body later on.

A7S II is contrast based AF, the A7R II is phase and contrast hybrid.
Phase detect active with Canon lenses with the Metabones adapter on the latter, it can be very fast.
Lack of native NX lenses, hmm... not really!
    S 16-50mm F2.0-2.8 OIS?
    S 50-150mm F2.8 OIS?
85mm F1.4? (It beats my Zeiss wide open)
    30mm F2.0? Lovely cheap pancake
45mm F2.0? Again very cheap, light, fast and sharp!
Those are the best ones... not a bad line up and covers 16-150 all at fast apertures.
AF is best on the S premium zooms
What else would you need? Plus you can adapt Nikon, Sony Alpha and a ton of other lenses to it with adapters.

If you really have the money - yeah, the A7S II. ESPECIALLY if it is going to be put into heavy production use.

As much as I perhaps might prefer some aspects of the NX1 image - the utter lack of native lenses and Samsung's leaving the market put it at a disadvantage as a daily production tool.

Yeah, I've been pursuing this issue with my lenses quite a bit recently.

I don't yet fully understand all of the optical science being discussed but the common factor of fewer elements seems to hold true, and is useful as a general guideline considering that we're looking at a lens that is well designed optically in all the other important areas.

Basically I look for the following: Lenses that are widely reviewed to be very good, but also happen to have as few elements as possible within them. So far the author's claim that this will be a lens with better 3D characteristics has held true in my experience.
To what extent the camera is playing a role I don't know - but I suspect it's at least a bit.
To my eye ALL Nikon Digitals seem to suffer enormously from the "flat" effect compared to Canons. To the point that despite owning a lot of Nikon glass (all of it falling into the fewer elements older design category) I feel I would never buy a Nikon camera.

Canon have a knack for this. When all around them is a circus of silly menus, bad ergonomics and underperforming images given the raw power under the hood, Canon with their underperforming specs have over-performing images with very good automatic white balance, well thought out menus and no frivolous stuff to get in the way on a shoot. I like the simplicity.
Clearly you get a lot more colour information in a 300Mbit or 500Mbit 4:2:2 file like on the XC10 and 1DC, plus it helps the colour science is bang on in Canon LOG unlike in S-LOG.
Clearly Sony know something is wrong otherwise they wouldn't have added 3 separate S Gamuts to the FS5 for different WB temperatures.
Sony seem hell bent on squeezing every last drop of dynamic range and colour gamut out of the image, then packing it into as small a file as possible... the end result is a bit of a car crash.
The A7S II was almost the 'dream camera' wasn't it... but I've barely felt compelled to use mine... I keep picking up my NX1 instead.
That's because the body design of the A7S II is soulless, feels awful in the hand - it has the ergonomic charm of a brick. They went backwards from the A7S and that wasn't exactly perfect to begin with.
Please Sony hire some designers from Fuji or whoever were responsible for the NX1 body at Samsung.
Then sort the menus out - it isn't rocket science.
I think they underestimate the importance of this... the shooting experience.
I feel a little bit guilty when I see someone struggling through a shoot with a Shogun bolted onto the top of a small Sony mirrorless camera... great specs and we should support the push, in the face of Canon's paralysis... but it's a horrible shooting experience isn't it...

Thanks to some ideas I had regarding hardware and if the nx1 was a true uhs2 camera or just backwards compatibility with uhs2 and thus only being a uhs1 camera I have found proof.

page 3 main pcb shows the full sd slot.

    The sd slot http://www.alps.com/prod/info/E/HTML/Connector/SDMemoryCard/SCDA/SCDACA0200.html
Made for uhs2. So the reality of the full speed uhs2 sd bus is possible.

I shoot a lot of Nikon Nikkor Ai-S manual primes and a couple of zooms too. These are generally pretty darn sharp lenses and they look fantastic on my NX1.
I also have that good old Sigma 18-35mm. Which is always great, it just really is.
Also a couple Samyangs - they match the Nikkors very closely.
And I have a Voightlander 20mm, but I've never tried it on the NX1. I suppose I should. I bet it will look just fiiiiine....

    Absolutely agree with this one,
    1. Most important - Higher bit rates is the thing we all need the most. Lets get rid of macroblocking and all sorts of problem.
    2. Turn off the NoiseReduction - in my mind, the NR must slow eat a big chunk of processing power. If turned off, this power can be used elswhere.
    3. 10 bit or 12RAW - I mean, honestly. You cant argue with this one..
    4. Higher frame rates - is what makes the camera more appealing to us, but honestly, not more usable. Just makes it a better deal
    5. Trying to disable crop 4K on NX500 and applieing 1 to 4 to NX500. That could make the camera more appealing to everybody. (not sure if we established already this is not possible?)

PS: Chant, as other stated, if you are dedicated to this task.. As other stated, dont be shy to ask for compensation or think of crowdfunding from us, if you plan to break in the camera and make it whole new better piece of tech.

Thanks for the info. I've been carrying 6-8 batteries per shoot. It wouldn't be that big of a deal, but the Wasabi Power ones get stuck in the battery compartment, which doesn't look too professional. Here's me over in the corner using tools to extract a stupid battery. This should help a bit. I was tempted to just go with a V-mount solution since I have a bunch, but this is way better weight and size-wise.
