I used to drive a nice oldtimer. A classic Jeep. A nice one. It's a very stylish and cool car. And for driving and transportation, it's way ahead ot any cheap Toyota at maximum of 2.000 $ you can get today. Driving this car regularly was a joy. The glorification of modern digital is BS. I have dozens of HQ (even on metal paper) prints proving this.
Just say: "I don't like it!" Saying it's not unique, is saying you are not able to see the look when working with film out of a classic camera. And yes, you need hours to get the same look. With film it's a matter of minutes. Just do a blind A/B test...

When i started shooting (stills) all i did was grab the camera walk around the city where i live and try to look for interesting things happening around me and i do remember the feeling i had when i actually captured something nice! And at the time i was using medium format so i only had 12 chances to get something awesome, and i really miss the ritual of going out shooting and then developing those rolls just to find what came out of it, they werent always the best picture one could take but it was my own personal ritual which i think i will go back to.

Lots of good input. Its interesting to read the different experiences and preferences we have. Only thing I will ad is, a powerful picture can capture sound better than any microphone imo. But its not easy

Figure I'd upload a few screengrabs from a recent project using the SLOG2 + SLOG3.cine combo we're talking about here. I used a DeLUT as a starting point to grade - most aren't great but I love Downton Alt. Tends to give very natural colours without doing too many weird things with grain or colour blocking. These were all shot using a Tiffen BlackPro Mist 1/4, which at times was possibly a bit much. But when it works I really love the effect it gives.

Rodolfo Fernandes reacted to Mattias Burling in D850 released. Nothing to see here, move along
Every time. It doesn't matter how many new cameras gets released.
Every time we have to go through the same debates based on clips like this where some guy is hand holding a long focal length in a store. And people base opinions of the gear from it... instead of trying it first.
Or someone sees a promotional video and say "crushed blacks"...
And every time we wait a few months and every single commenter changes their minds in silence when they see what actually can be done with the gear.
So like every time before my tips are,
Promotional videos always crush blacks on purpose. Some dude in a store shooting with the camera attached to a cable isn't a good sample. Wait. Try it first. Promotional pictures are often very mainstream and stock photo looking. Wait. For gods sake wait!
There is no rush. A new camera is released again tomorrow

there are so many reasons to criticise nikon: In no particular order:  Their marketing, product strategy, blinkeredness with video, nikon 1, DL debacle, those embarrassing action cams, their locked down firmware, their corporate culture, lack of imagination, inability to listen to their users... the list goes on. But rarely do you hear nikon shooters go *sigh, I wish I could take photos like wot that samsung smartphone does* hee hee

deciding which camera to buy based on a DXOmark score is as sensible as a mixed metaphor on a bull.
and as td^ says I agree with you on most things, but not this. I dont agree with him either. Clearly image quality is not determined by dxomarks.  Surely you know better than most: horses for courses.  D5 is about speed.
according to dxo my d5500 has better dynamic range than my d800. It just doesn't. Maybe in the testormatic-dynamic-rangifier2000 it does, but in lightroom and photoshop - in a picture of an actual thing - it does not. Similarly my canon 7d would get near the 5dmk2 in theory, bit in practice the shadows were a mushy purple and green nightmare.
Anyhoo, IMHO the d800/d810 still has the nicest image on the market: and that's not bad for a 5 year old camera.

    1. Think about the light before anything else.
    2. Change that lens, it may look way better on different glass.
    3. When the talent is in thought, or simply just waiting for a direction, roll the camera without their knowledge. You can get some really useful, very natural moments.
    4. Don't do the shot once. You may pull off the technique better on repeat.
    5. Bring 634 lens cloths to a shoot, because you will lose 633 of them.
    6. Never settle on a grade straight away. Look at it again tomorrow. Those skin tones might be green and you had no idea.
    7. If you're not sure if it's right, it's definitely not. Trust yourself. It's got to feel right, always.
    8. Adjust the light again. It will look better.
    9. Eye lights. Make the effort.
    10. Buy a RED cam. Send it back. Read EOSHD and get confused. Get a GH5.
