The problem is that the premium end of the filmmaking market is going full frame.
Sony will want their XDCAM and CineAlta in pole position to capitalise on the trend.
Let's put it another way... They did not cripple the recent releases (A7R IV, A6400) to protect the A7S line.
They are doing a Canon... But the ironic thing is, Canon have changed strategy... FF 60p 5.5 RAW and DCI 4K 10bit on a DSLR.
    Oops.
Is it too late to get the "other" A7S III out of the cooker or are testers already being served the lukewarm version??
It's a mistake to think Blackmagic is any different. The Pocket cameras are just loss-leaders for URSA and there to increase adoption of Resolve and brand awareness.
Blackmagic would put more effort into the Pocket 4K and 6K if they were serious about enthusiasts... They'd be made a proper factory without sawdust on the sensor.

If these A7S-III specs are right. Sony seems to be targeting the Lumix S1 but maybe NOT the S1H. I suspect that the S1H is WAY over spec'd for Sony to match in any "consumer" Alpha. XDCAM managers will demand that the future A7S-III will need to be crippled in very distinct ways. Alpha will want it to have everything and XDCAM would rather it not even exist at all. At some point they will agree and compromise with each other. The S1H is overloaded with an extremely high feature set that rivals an FX9 or even possibly Venice. Lumix is using Sony's own EXMOR image sensors against them!
10bit color is a must but what about Alpha's 29 minute time limit? Will Sony allow it to properly overheat to keep the high dollar pro's away from it? Rumors also say an FX6 is on the way...the cheaper, SD card long-GOP version of the FX9.
I suspect that the A7S-III is THE most hotly debated camera in Sony headquater meeting rooms in the companies history.
The A7S-III's biggest enemy wont be Lumix, Cannon, Nikon or BlackMagic. Its biggest enemy will be Sony's own internal politics!

We had half of this info before here in November:
A good guess of the possible new Sony A7IV specs…

No it mentions FF 1.2x crop in new A7 column as well, exact same as last time. If it did the faster frame rate in 6K full pixel readout, it wouldn't need to mention a 1.2x crop at all. Who wants a 1.2x crop mode as a 'feature', creatively speaking?

    No chance.
There's no way Sony would let this be better than the cheaper version of the FX9.
I predicted a while ago it would be something like:
    - 4k 10 bit up to 30p.
    - 4k 8 bit 60p (10 bit external)
    - Updated with PDAF.
    - Bigger battery.
    - Maybe S-Cinetone profile to match with FX9.
    - One little surprise, like 4k 120fps cropped with buffer.
    - Announcement NAB 2020.

It's 5 years in the making, so I hope to see something groundbreaking from Sony - but I wouldn't bet on it being "revolutionary".
The camera to watch out for this year looks to be the XT4. Do we have a blockbuster on our hands?

If the chart is true (Androidlad is usually right) it is a very disappointing one especially when it comes to new A7S
Maybe it will shoot ProRes & RAW internally and redeam itself?!

After the disruption A7 III caused, Sony really slowed down with being innovative and offering breakthrough specs, so I wouldn't be too surprised if the info provided by androidlad proved to be true.
Just take a look at a6x00 series.
The only thing superior to Fuji X-T30 / X-T3 is that Sony offers IBIS and has better AF.

    This is quite exciting....

I like the fact that Sony has finally decided to compromise the size for better thermals. Also they seem to have prioritized bit rate (hopefully) and frame rate over 6k or 8k....

This video, at the very beginning, shows aliasing color artifacts. It is claimed to be ProRes RAW. But the aliasing color artifacts could be from debayering color moiré due a lack of AA filter, of from pixel skipping in the RAW codec. It is hard to tell if not also the same footage was captured in N-Log.
BTW ... and to avoid any misunderstanding ...
I do NOT say "aliasing is an issue". I say Nikon aplies pixel skipping in their RAW data pipeline. As with debayering color moiré, I expect plenty of footage where its effects can't be noticed. I even remember the early days of the D800E (stills photography) where people claimed debayering color moiré would never be seen. It took a while. But today, it is pretty well understood when to expect, and not to expect, color moiré. Mostly in very fine farbrics of fashion at a single critical distance actually.

Hi, as I wrote in my blog article, field tests are missing and I am interested to learn about the practical impact myself.
OTOH, external 10 bit N-Log may be just as good and may have less risk of flickering (between frames) at lines, edges or fine regular structures like roof tiles or fashion texture. That would be the real-world test I am most interested in.
    @gingercat
That's absolutely not the case here. The topic has been dealt with in replies above.

@Eno, you are right absolutely. My article says skipping, not binning.
Andrew posted in this thread and I replied already that it is pixel skipping, not binning. And that bit depth has nothing to do with it, as video readouts are all 12 bit. His post and my reply to him got removed, unfortunately.

    BOOM! I predicted it.

No AF during 4K 60p or raw, and hefty heavy bulky files.
To easy to foresee, is typical Canon behaviour!

Everyone should promise to end this abusive relationship with Canon and promise never to ever return to her, never to give her a penny more. (& definitely not US$6,500 more!!)

It feels like YEARS people have been saying "another six months until the a7S mk3, I'll just wait...."

Kinda agree with @wolf33d , Sony is turning into the new Canon.

Let's support Panasonic / BMD / Z Cam / Sigma / Kinefinity / Fuji etc instead! (we're spoiled for choice, no shortage of options to choose instead of Sony!)

I understand that they dont want to give AF on the 5.4k raw. But i think not giving it on the 4k 60 mode is a bummer.
They know perfectly well how to hit you with the cripple hammer.
If we can get about 12.5 stops of usable DR with log, This would be a winner camera.
Now the only thing remaining is the price.

I will never understand the complaints about Sony menus and UI.
Sure they are big but then there is LOT in it on a camera like an A7s.
I have cameras (some P&S and some ILCs) from Sony (2), Canon (3), Fuji (1), and Panasonic (2) and have had lots from Pentax, Nikon and Olympus and more and I do not find Sony all that different to any of the others.
