So, I recently picked up a Pixel 5a on sale and gave the Motion Cam app a go on it. I've been having some fun and finding some fairly consistent results with the full sensor (4032X3024) @ 12FPS. I think the sensor size comes close to super 8mm sizing and the results definitely have an 8mm vibe.
The screen grab below is from a cinemaDNG sequence dropped into Resolve on a 1080p/ rec709/ linear timeline -> color space transform (which I didn't even know you could use in the free version) ARRI LogC output gamma -> ARRI Alexa LogC to rec709 LUT -> bumped up the saturation a bit and brought the shadows down with the log wheels
Be gentle; what I know of a RAW workflow has been learned in about 2 hours this week.
There's no noise reduction applied, but it seems like the downscale helped clean things up and give a more film like quality.
The app is a bit clunky, but is obviously in beta and can't be fully criticized yet. Manual focus would be amazing and there were some exposure shifts that may or may not have been my fault. If someone sold this technology with a MFT lens mount on it as a modern 8mm camera I would for sure buy one. It's been fun and I'm enjoying learning about RAW correction/ grading.
There seems to be a few people catching on to the app on YouTube. People with more powerful phones seem to be having better luck with things. Hopefully development continues with success and RED doesn't interfere!

Some DR tests on rare sunny winter days - raw images vs. native camera app video recording. No detail enhancements for raw (no NR, sharpening, dehazing and such), just shadows/highlights and gamma curve adjustments in ACR to get the better idea of what's going on. All shots are in native resolution, 1:1, no scaling.
I'm still not confident about exposure settings because of live feed high contrast. I tend to check the overall image with AE on and then dial manual settings to nearly same looking picture. Native video is shot in auto mode. It actually represents well in terms of contrast the image you see in live view shooting raw.
So, as you can see there is no big difference in DR (like you may expect comparing raw and "baked-in r709" footage from cinema camera). "Bridge" scene got a bit overexposed in video compared to raw, I have a feeling that it was possible to bring back overexposed building in the back without killing shadows with minor exposure shift. What makes the difference for me is highlight rolloff - it is natural and color consistent, just look at snow in front in "hotel" shot and sun spots on the top of "bridge" shot. Shadows are more manageable for me, too. Yes, there is a lot of chroma noise but it's easily controlled by native ACR/Resolve tools, luma noise is very thin and even, so you can balance between shadow details and noise suppression up to your taste.
But the most prominent difference is due to zero sharpening. Just check small details like branches, especially on contrast background. It's not DR related, but I can't avoid mentioning it.
Is raw a necessity for such result? Dunno. Maybe no postprocessing, log profile and 10bit 400Mbps h26x instead 8bit 40Mbps will give comparable results. If you have a phone that is capable of such recording modes I would love to see the compare.

@projectwoofer i really enjoyed the images and the color palette. Especially liked the shots at 1.04 and the ones right after, great muted tones and lensing. What aperture did you film these with? The Mitakon seems like a winner. I didnt mind some blown highlights, as I really digged the overall palette and mute you achieved. Keep em coming.

Could be due to your tripod plate. I never had any problems with mounting plates. Still it is a lack in design to only provide one crew hole on hybrid video/photo cams. I really don´t like the mounting experience with my much heavier Lumix S1. Anyway, a cage would provide great mounting strength, but takes away from the graceful appearance and light footrpint of the camera. Maybe check for different plates I would imagine.:)

I watched it yesterday and my comment didnt save. So my even greater pleasure now to express my joy and appreciation for your short film. I loved everything about it, the energy the rhythm, the visuality and shot design. Classic genre style in classy quality. I dont mind the rather "realistic" as opposed to stylised grades. I know the material could have been graded into many thinkable directions. Great stuff, thanks and keep em coming! cheers:)
Btw, had some troubles with saving my comment again. Has been like that for me a few times lately.

i'm really quite jealous of all this anamorphic goodness now that i have an ipone 13 turn up. im looking at getting the sandmark or moment anamorphic. Which ever one gives me the golden flare. something a little different perhaps, but blue is a little over done i feel. Gold may give me an edge especially since i do like a good sunset.  Sunrises tend to be elusive beasts, not sure why 😎

Thank you very much for the feedback dear friends.
It is very stressful to make these types of videos when out of 15 people, only 2 really know what they are doing, and the rest are waiting and chatting. So I must dedicate to adjusting the lights, the camera, the set, explaining to an administrative staff how to turn on and start recording the mixpre. Unpack the sweets, distribute the sugar, help to dress the companions ...
Two different locations in 6 hours in total.
The total production budget was 0.
In the end you can't be at all ...
Luckily more and more people want to participate selflessly in our projects, so I think we can only improve for the next time.
I leave some photos of the filming.
P.S. At the end of the day, the administrative person told me that he did not know why the battery level went up to the red zone and to the green zone so fast. It was the audio level (vu meter) and he thought throughout the recording that it was the state of the battery. At that moment I wanted to die 🤣

A good one of us lost his best friend (his father) and I'd appreciate we might drop a bell... how strangers, or not so much, may we all embrace his pain in solidarity with a good and talented artist.
Altogether can be easier to overcome it.
Insignificant but life is made of a very few contributions.

I met him @Danilo Del Tufo from dvxuser a decade and half ago and we became good friends and collaborators also in real life for a decade now already -- I am producing right now a feature film from a story written by him... the time really flies!

So I found lots of older footage shot with the GX85 that I hadn’t used in any other project and I started experimenting a bit with color grading. My main activity is music so I create videos for my music. Normally I have a specific concept for the videos but a lot of times I just want to go out and shoot. So I have a lot of footage that I hadn’t used till now, when the idea came to my mind: I’ll create a series of, let’s say “cinematic ambient” videos, something like an online creative diary of simple moments, walks on the mountain and so on. This is an ongoing project and I’m very excited about it. I’ll use footage, actual field recordings and original minimalistic ambient music atmospheres. Let’s see how it goes! First attempt here, because of the awful YouTube compression better watch it in 4K 😉:

    Hahaha. I love it.
I didn't even use the subtitle track, and I still got it, all thanks to the good visuals and references.
IMHO, if you just work on the pacing (building it up slowly, to a crescendo), the grade (little more faded or washed out) and the soundtrack (more build up, with a heartbeat or its equivalent, as reference), this could easily be of a masterpiece.
    Great homage.

As usual in recent years I have been making a Christmas video for the police force where I work.
This year with more sense of humor, parodying Breaking Bad.
No professional, all who appear are police officers.

@John Matthews  I own the high resolving 20mm 1.7. The 14mm is even higher resolving and one of the sharpest m43 lenses. Kinda interested in it as well. I just don´t like fly by wire focus. But who really does.:)

@mercer S35 has a faster sensor readout, 15ms vs 22ms. 4K 50/60p is 10bit 420. S35 is still even using a bit more than a 1to1 readout I think. It´s a powerful image taker but takes some effort in grading. I have a S1, same sensor and all, just no swivel screen and full Hdmi. S35 gives me the opportunity to use some s16 lenses covering S35 sensor size.

FYI- I'm repurchasing the Panasonic 14mm F2.5 II. That lens with its size was too hard to resist. It wasn't a need, but I took so many good photos with it and I will probably never let it go again. Definitely unique in M43.

In fact, I always used AWB until a shot that I've taken on a trip - with a GX85, by the way. It was climbing the stairs in the center atrium of the British Museum in London with a gimbal.

Even more strange, the atrium is completely flooded with sun light from the ceiling, which in theory should have caused no troubles with AWB. Don't know if the camera picked the warmer tones of the surrounding walls, but from the bottom to the top of the stairs the white balance shifted back and forth around 5 times, ruining the shot.

Still forget almost all the times to lock the white balance while filming (I'm an amateur, after all), but this case changed my mind about AWB - now I almost only film my daughter inside home, and with my X-S10 sometime I noticed some AWB shifting too.

By the way, I don't have any with it from the GX85 but I do have these from the OG Pocket.
The extra reach and, particularly, the IS won't do you any harm with it on your BM cameras as a single lens solution for travelling. Although the extra crop of the BM cameras means that the wide end can make it a bit more challenging at times.

Latest random internet purchase arrived today...
    Everyone, meet Miranda:

Miranda is an M42 28mm F2.8 lens made in Japan, pictured on the M42 speed booster, with the GX85.  No clue about anything else about her.
Here are some test images, all taken wide open, with 4K CineD profile and SOOC on a 1080p timeline.

It looks like the corners are crazily soft.  They are soft, but the focal plane is actually very curved, so an object to the side of the frame has to be quite a lot further back to be in focus than something in the middle of the frame in focus.  Maybe I can take nice footage of curved buildings, or beachballs.
Flares are nicely controlled but aren't too modern...   shaded vs unshaded from direct sun:

I'm really happy that she's sharp wide open in the centre, which my only other m42 28mm F2.8 lens, a Yashica Yashinon, was most definitely not.  This matters as I often use the 2X digital zoom in-camera to punch in for close-ups.
I am, however, a little nervous about how 'vintage' she is.  I do have a number of other more modern options for similar focal lengths though, so I'm not locked into the look and so it'll be a fun process.  I'm also not that familiar with shooting on the 44mm equivalent focal length.
