  1. The Shogun just added compatibility with the FSRAW. Now it can read that 12bit 4K RAW signal.

You can't record it all, as in record 12bit 4K raw.

It can only take that raw signal, debayer it and give you a compressed ProRes/DNxHD 10bit 4K/2K DCI files, only up to 30p. Yes much better than the previous 8bit 1080p. MUCH.

So if that's all you need, go ahead.

Hey guys, thanks a lot for all being so helpful!

So, Ebrahim, with Firmware 6.4 Shogun would record 10bit 4K without having to pay Sony for a FS700 4K Firmware update?

Not shooting high class cams (yet:) Still wrenching my G6- film grain really helps to dither out some nastiest macroblocking.

That FS700 is from my filmschool and needs some new energy put into it.

    cheers, Marty

  2. Hey, you are true camera lovers!:) Here are the ungraded shots.

I graded by eye, so the canon guess is taken as a compliment.

It´s a G6, graded in Davinci, lit with one 300w tungsten and a golden reflector. Shot on 3000Kelvin, Natural, all -2, but color at 0.

As for the aps c reference, it was shot with a china speedbooster!:) Great guessing, guys!

Lens was a Canon FD 28mm lens, F2.8, the dancing shot is a Tokina 11-20 2.8 on another china speedbooster.

Hope you liked the grade and thanks for that little fun guessing game.

The grain was put on top twice, once for the darks and another one for the highlights. Helped big, big time to make the ugly macroblocking

disappear. So G6 to the limits with ISO 1600 and a speedboosted Fstop of around 2.0.

    Thanks for enjoying and cheers,

    Marty

Smallish sensor look (of wide-angle lens stopped down a lot) and a lot of greens (if not colorgraded too much like this on purpose)

    Verdict: GH2 / G6

Exactly, G6! ApsC (through speedboosted lens) is right too, LX100, GH4, Panasonic, Sony, all great guesses. Thanks for the fun, guys!

  3. Hey Jimmy,

Thanks for your reply. Did I get this right- Shogun records real 10bit 4K from the FS700 with the new Atomos Firmware?

Before, all it took from the FS700 was 4:2:2 8bit 1080p.

Odyssey Q7 with Raw update is pretty pricey. Update itself is over 900 USD.

So a real 10bit solution with the Shogun would be awesome. Anybody shot with that combination getting beautiful 10bit 4K?

  4. Hallo,

Is it possible to get real 10bit 4K and 10bit 1080p out of the FS700 using the Atomos Shogun since its newest update?

In June there was a Firmware update for the Shogun. It says 4k is with the Fs 700 would be possible.

Would that be real 10bit Prores? Would downscale from the 4K feed to real 10bit 1080p be possible with the Shogun? Is there any fee to pay to Sony or Atomos

to be able to get that feature? Are SDI and HDMI both possible for that?

Would be great to hear from you guys.

    Thanks a lot, Marty

  5. cliptoolz is no longer available unfortunately.

Hey, cliptoolz is still available. Check the link at the very bottom, i mean very, very bottom of the linked page. There is a dropbox download link still working!

You should convert footage (4K). Free software - ClipToolzConvertV2. Link: http://hdcinematics.com/convert-V2.html

    Hey Bami,

I used a setting for wrapping into mov container. So, do you or anybody else know,  if that would be a losless process for wrapping my creepy mts files (davinci doesnt like em:) into mov?

It didnt take longer than 2 seconds for a 2 minutes clip. So I guess, there was no converting (thatfore that being a lossless process) involved, unless my computer turned into a supercomputer over night:)

  6. -internal super clean 10bit ALL I 1080p, with a perfect downscale from 4K like the Sony A7s, all that in 24 to 60p

    -internal 10 bit 4K

    -VLOG

    -super clean 1080 120fps 8bit slowmo

    - 2000 USD

-small battery grip like HDMI recorder with XLRs and HDMI connectivity for external monitors for around 800 USD

no supernatural feats, just great possible features:)

  7. Hey Aaron, great colors and shooting on your vid! Definately "cinematice":)

Your captures above show posterization in the shadows. As Zak has shown, 10bit seems the way to go.

In the 8bit 10bit VLOG thread, EOSHD user bunk recognized impact of white balance on the quality of the VLOG footage.

Hopefully Zak can do some more 10bit testing.

  8. Judging by Nick Driftwoods examples, VLOG in 10bit is a real treat. Threw an Arri to REC LUT on it and looked great.

Maybe it´s because they put some nice lighting up for the footage, would say most definately so. It´s just not visible in LOG, but after

the LUT or grade on top of it:) Seems VLOG 10bit is a different beast than A7s/RX10ii Slog!

Can´t wait to see the first cat videos and walking heads in VLOG 8 and 10 bit :)

  9. Hey Fuzzy,

Sentimental topic done with a light hand and great craftsmanship. 1hour- great job! Skintones looking good. Video looking great and very well done.

I also agree on your statement about the median of video tech. Great write up. But VLOG on GH4 is really looking nice, at least the 10bit side of it.

Nick Driftwoods samples were very easy to handle to get great colors out of. But who knows what nice setup of lights the have been using.

Wouldnt see that on the LOG file, just after the Grade or LUT:)

Well, here's a very simple shoot as an example.  I did this for a friend over the weekend on a moments notice. It was basically a 1 hour shoot. I grabbed shots as fast as possible.

Sure, I could have placed a tripod in a lot of spots and had the subject wait for me to compose... Or I could have let her do her thing and I would just follow, and still get cool shots along the way.

With the EM5II, I just did the latter

Slider shots without a rig, static shots without a tripod...it's a very nice capability to have.

Granted, this isn't groundbreaking stuff, but this particular camera does give me some worthwhile footage.

I don't know what else to say.  It's fun for me.  That's all

  10. Sorry, I'm no engineer.  I spent a few years programming USB interfaces to cameras and Arduino controlled robots for panoramas.  Athough I think Andrew often expects too much from the camera companies this is one area where I completely agree that Panasonic should have shown up on his doorstep and hired him as a consultant on that device. Or they might have at least asked his opinion on this forum ;)   Why they even bothered, or set that price, is beyond me.  However, all these companies are obviously struggling to meet market needs.

I bought a SmallHD 7 and hoped I could use it to take, and show, stills taken on my A7.  Problem #1:  The HDMI cable sometimes loses its connection and the SmallHD needs to be reset.  HUGE pain.  Problem #2: Although the external monitor will flip into portrait mode while shooting, it won't while in play mode.  So I can't show what I just shot in portrait mode.  They have to look at it cropped.

My advice, which is probably a waste of time, is for you and Andrew to come up with the specs you want.  Then if Andrew can say 5,000 users will buy it at $x price I think Panasonic might go for it.  Having outside engineers do it, just too much work for a limited market.  If Andrew can resist humiliating people when they screw up, the bees will come to the honey!!!!

    Hallo Max!

thank you very much for your reply. So cool to hear from you on this!

Your estimate of 5000 people willing to put up x$ price sounds very promising to me. Right now it´s us five so far. But 5000 people should really do it, I think too!

If Andrew is exited by this idea, I will be able to feel this device in my hands even before I got a GH4:) Seriously, I´d love that 10bit in a handy sturdy package, DSLR form

factor. So maybe Andrew can get some people at Panasonic or the supporting infrastructure interested and exited. "ANDREW REID Battery Grip Recorder"!

"Companies .. struggling to meet market needs", you put that into words very nicely:) It´s also interesting that they so obviously ignore some very

obvious basic needs, such as for sturdy cable connections and Playback in Portrait on the HD7!

best regards and a Good night, Sir (getting 1am around here:)

  11. Putting a 4K 10bit recorder in there would be possible as well. Enough room to cool it with a heat sink.

    Panasonic missed a big opportunity...

They came out with a shit brick with wires in it for $2000.

It should have been a battery, a recorder, as well as an interface unit, or at the very least an ergonomic interface unit for XLR like what Sony have with their hotshoe thingy.

There is a wide open gap in the market for a battery grip recorder which extends battery life, uses single battery for camera and recorder, no extra bulky screen, just use the one on the camera. Shogun battery life, separate battery to worry about, big bulky screen, no thanks.

Andrew, exactly- huge gap in the market. And you gave that child a name "battery grip recorder", I´d add- with XLR connctions. But thats too long for a name:)

Now you could promote that, if there would be some money earning opportunity in it for you, since pushing that idea to production level would be a lot of work.

I´m no tech guy, but some on your forum are. Like you said, "wide open gap in the market"!:) Maxotics is an engineer. He could provide some first steps maybe.

  12. Definitely doable on Kickstarter.

Massive 13,000mha battery is quite small these days, only slightly larger than a 2.5" HDD and smaller than a 3.5" one

An HDMI interface chip inside, from GH4 HDMI port... out to XLR, HD-SDI, probably an off the shelf component.

I've seen more complex stuff done on Kickstarter.

The YAGH was a sales DISASTER though due to dreadful ergonomics and need for external power, however they listened to with regards feedback on that should have had his mouth taped up.

That´s what I´d love to see! What company would you propose or promote this idea to, if you were keen about it?:)

Wouldn´t Zacuto be able to pull this off? People would buy it I think.

  13.  The YAGH has a regular size HDMI port, and there are some interesting converters on eBay that conform to the body of the GH4.

Yeah. Just the combination of full HDMI, XLR, internal recording and battery would be awesome. All in a battery grip size package.

But good point though. Found this two minutes ago. But still, "Wouldn´t it be nice", to put it with the Beach Boys:)

    1619_1.jpg

  14. Just wondering why it hasn´t been much of a topic. Atomos could bring it on to combine it with their Shoguns and Ninjas.

The device would be without the recorder then, cuz of cannibalizing their monitors/recorders.

Zacuto could bring it on. But I guess a camera cage with Mini HDMI lock will have to do it plus some Beachtek or Juicedlink:(

I think, people would buy this thing with internal 4K and HD recording, battery and XLR, even without the internal recorder.

  15. Hallo,

wouldn´t it be possible to bring out a YAGH like device with internal battery and GH4 like battery life?

As I´ve seen on this forum there are quiet a few technically well educated people on here, also practioners in the technical fields.

Thinking about JCS, Maxotics, Sunyata, Axel and others.

Is there anything out there with XLR and sturdy full HDMI or SDI connection AND internal battery? Havent come across anything like that yet.

Why not going for a Kickstarter campaign. Guys, would you like to do it? Fame and financial success would be yours!:)

Andrew, would you like to promote a project like that to your contacts in the field like Zacuto and so?

  16. Yeah I have actually been using it with Natural and Portrait. I think the 1DC LUT is optimized by using Cine V.

    Hallo Aaron,

Was looking for some G6 profile for Resolve and found this. The author states, Portrait has the most amount of Reds. It´s supporting your find,

which I will check out definately! I will be watching out the greyish spots in skintones and not going too flat, keeping color and contrast around

0/-2, like Zak Forsman is doing too- rather flatening the footage in post.

So here are the findings about Portrait and other Panny G6 profiles:
