benymypony reacted to Andrew Reid in LUT Loader crashing my FCPX
It is the most RIDICULOUS thing that Apple's flagship NLE doesn't have LUT support built in.
If you're going to use the same LUT on every clip I recommend EditReady to apply the LUT during transcoding to ProRes. It will make your edit a lot smoother too than editing the camera files direct.

Nobody is happy. As per usual. If people can't make a film with the A6500, they couldn't make it with anything.

That frame was from a small size Internet version of the video.
This is from the original frame:

benymypony reacted to Matjoez in Canon 1D X Mark II review part 1 - why superior colour means it's game over for my Sony A7S II
The 1DXII paired with the Canon 40mm STM lens is the most fun setup I've ever shot with. Spent three weeks travelling in Europe and everything was shot with that setup (combined with the eoshd chrome profile which I am in love with!). The fact that the lens is so lightweight and small makes it an even bigger powerhouse imo (getting difficult to reach shots etc)

benymypony reacted to Andrew Reid in Canon 1D X Mark II review part 1 - why superior colour means it's game over for my Sony A7S II
Canon have made the biggest step forwards with their DSLR technology this year that we've seen since 2008 and the 5D Mark II.
However it isn't the 5D Mark IV that has me excited so much the 1D X Mark II. This is a camera that will see out the next 6 years as the benchmark for others to follow.

benymypony reacted to Mattias Burling in My Review of the New Zhiyun Crane-M 3-Axis Gimbal
This little badboy has been available on the Chinese part of the Zheyun website for some time. And my guess is that it will most likely show up on the english site very soon. Ive had it for a while but was asked to wait until yesterday (at the earliest).
Just like the predecessor it is very nicely built and super easy to setup.
Unlike last time I actually balanced it before testing. But that was very painless and no need for tools.
This is my first setup and test around the house (yes, with the dog ).
What separates the ”Crane-M” from the larger ”Crane” is first and foremost the maximum payload. 650g on the M and 1200 on the bigger brother.
Other than that Zheyun has been very consistent imo.
For me that almost never use such devices it makes more sense to have a smaller version and use it with a speciality camera like the rx100iv.
I will do some additional testing and report back after trying the remote, app, etc.
My thoughts so far:
+
Just as good quality as the Crane
Works nicely, I mean at 02:50 I floor it down a bumpy hill.
Very easy to use
Nice and small
Can carry a bmpcc
-
Can obstruct itself
Not as powerful
Controls could be more featured out of the box
Wished the batteries sat side by side

benymypony reacted to Cinegain in Never Satisfied
Started watching the new season of Narcos the other day. I started noticing how quite a few shots had some shakiness to 'em. There's no smooth hovering with a locked feeling. It moves. It adds something raw. It's organic. It's real. That's the thing if you don't take care of overdoing it... everything is just articially floating, like a virtual camera through 3D space. Now that has its use, surely, but like everything, it's a tool. You shoot stable footage when a situation is under control... when a character's thoughts are running around or there's an intense dialog, you shake things up a bit. Like just about everything in life... enjoy in moderation. Put it to good use, but don't overdo it. To have the possibility and choice though, I think is great!

Fujifilm X-T2 Here some SOOC footage with different settings.
Please ignore the framing! It was a quick & dirty test (and I actually don't know how I changed my position in the last moment).
I think reducing the color in the camera settings gives more freedom in grading. But to exploit the film simulations it might be good to leave it on 0 (I even consider pushing color). I just don't want to loose information. Here I give you links to footage with different settings.
Pro Neg Std. with Color = 0: https://www.dropbox.com/s/5ka8nosswluaotb/ProNegStdColor0.MOV?dl=0
Classic Chrome with Color = -4: https://www.dropbox.com/s/u32vyr998ui84il/ClassicChromeColor-4.MOV?dl=0
Classic Chrome with Color = 0: https://www.dropbox.com/s/uzmr3yn4p6vgr2p/ClassicChromeColor0.MOV?dl=0
(all other settings are Highlight & Shadow Tone = -2, Sharpness = -4)
Looking at the black grill cover I hardly see information loss in the blacks. And the look of the film simulation outweighs the loss I recognized.
Of course, if you are picky about colour, the film simulations wont shorten your time for grading (you knew that, didn't you), but the final result looks amazing. I hope, that Fujifilm develops an additional motion picture film simulation as part of the firmware upgrade (like they did with Classic Chrome).
Please, give me some feedback in terms of information loss and regarding the benefit of increasing the colour of the film simulation.

If you're going to buy a Canon DSLR and **not** use Magic Lantern then you're really throwing your money away.
One of the few rare good reasons to consider a Canon DSLR for filmmaking is because of Magic Lantern.

benymypony reacted to Gregormannschaft in A7s SLOG2 Easier to Grade with Lumetri Color
So I've always, always struggled to get SLOG2 right on the A7s. I'm self taught and not a particuarly good colorist. I still haven't learned how to read scopes properly and found myself relying on the presets within FilmConvert to help me get colour and exposure right when using it. I had a couple of tests that were 'OK' but always found there to be far too much noise and ended up switching over to Cine4, and recently, Cine2 when using the camera.
For some reason I decided to give it another shot this weekend after playing around with the new Lumetri Colour panel in Adobe Premiere CC, and lo and behold, it is far far easier to grade and I have finally gotten footage that isn't a noise infested mess. Being able to play around with the highlights, whites, shadows and blacks with sliders instead of curves (as I was previously using) gave me way more control over the image. Below is an example of some quick shots I took walking around Berlin this weekend, graded with a Visioncolor Impulz Ultimate LUT. Also have to add, that while the original footage did have a yellow tinge to it, this was easily taken out with the saturation wheel. Single out the offending yellow hue, drop the saturation of that hue, and its gone.
Now onto the next mystery of why my Vimeo uploads always end up pixelated when there's any sort of movement...better to download if you're curious.
Either way, if you found SLOG 2 was a nightmare beforehand it might be worth checking out again if you have access to Premiere CC. -

benymypony reacted to IronFilm in BMPCC 2.5k or RED MX
Get yourself a Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera. The more compact form factor, 60fps slow motions, are all big gains over the BMCC. (2.5K is only in raw from the BMCC, at all other times it is 1080 same as BMPCC/BMMCC(
Get native mount lenses (such as the T0.95 lenses from SLR Magic) or use a focal reducer (for near FoV of S35).
(reference: I own a BMPCC, shot part of a feature film with a RED One MX, and use a BMCC as well)

benymypony reacted to Andrew Reid in DPReview hype 5D Mark IV sensor dynamic range
"Dramatic dynamic range improvement"
"Back when we were briefed by Canon about its update to one of the most popular line of digital SLRs in existence, Canon told us that dynamic range was one of the top concerns of current 5D-series owners."
"A major leap forward"
https://***URL removed***/news/3229755227/canon-5d-mark-iv-brings-dramatic-dynamic-range-improvements-to-the-5d-line
...
So let's take a look at the reality behind the hype...
Oh hey it's their own test scene...
+6EV shadow recovery on a shot exposed for the highlights
Samsung NX1 has it for breakfast
The A7R II turns up and has it with milk and tea
And the D750... 2 years old... Mentioned NOWHERE in the DPReview article, is an order of magnitude less noisy at +6EV recovery
All in all meaning the 5D Mark IV has less dynamic range than the Samsung NX1.
I double checked...
Yeah it does.
And that my friends is why in a nutshell I stopped being a writer for DPReview.

benymypony got a reaction from Phil A in BLMCC 4K?
I recently bought a BMPC 4K in Canon EF and I don't regret.
I used the BMPC 4K during a trip in Japan this month and I shot with natural light, in street, forest, etc.
The cons of this camera are, in my opinion, its a bit heavy weight, bad ability in low light, no slow motion, unreliable battery indicator and ND filter recommended.
But the pros are the image quality, the ProRes 422 HQ in UHD, the CinemaDNG RAW in 4000x2160, the SSD, the touch screen and the operating system are simple and pretty fast, the general build quality and the price !
The BMPC 4K is perfect for controlled shooting and if you don't need slow motion.

benymypony reacted to Flynn in Ursa mini...is this the end of blackmagic?
I wish they'd just focus on developing a killer new model of the BMPCC. To me, it looks like they've wasted a ton of time and money developing all these niche cameras when the one camera they have that sold reasonably well and has broad appeal is in dire need of a hardware update. One or two cameras for BM is more than enough. Keep it simple. They have spent a fortune developing all these other cameras. Just focus on improving the 4.6 and the BMPCC.

benymypony got a reaction from andrgl in Ursa mini...is this the end of blackmagic?
It's very interesting. In my opinion I think that Blackmagic is the camera manufacturer with the biggest potiental today.
I'm tired of all these cameras with low video abilities for pro.
I mean we need RAW, we need at least 4:2:2 10bit, we need ProPres internal, we need a serious LOG profile, we need 4K 60fps minimum, we need < 5000€ price, etc. We are in 2016...
For sure Sony, Canon and Panasonic are able to do that in a DSLR but they don't want, to prevent cross market products (otherwise, overheating seems the only problem imo).
Recently I bought a used Blackmagic Production 4K in pack with SSD and lenses and even if this camera has some bad points, there is no competitor at this price.
Hope Blackmagic will not become as RED and create a camera that cost a house.
