    Its as much possible as the existence of Magic Lantern, yes I mean CineDNG files.

    Apparently the Tizen Dev Tools exists but for Ubuntu Linux only.
    Explains how to build a package for NX1 or NX500

    Edit:
    I found Tizen SDK Tool for Windows, wonder if it will work with the Tizen OS in the NX series.

    They do, Its in the video quality setting. The question is are they sandbagging with the HQ video setting and by how much.

    Honestly for me the 4K/UHD quality of the NX1 if good enough for my purposes. I would really just like to see things like the 29 min limit removed or 4k 60p or 1080 240p

    It's all about the codec parameters. They chose file size over detail. They could have made it so that the user could choose.

    I'm quite sure that if nx1 could output in 4:4:4 10/12bit, it would sell so many units that samsung could even think about starting again the production :-P

    Another really promising snipet from NX1_packages\standard-arm7\usr\include\wideo\drime5\hdmi\d5_hdmi_video_type.h

    /**
     * @enum ColorSpace
     * @brief Color space of video stream.
     */
    enum ColorSpace {
        HDMI_CS_RGB,/**< RGB color space */
        HDMI_CS_YCBCR444,/**< YCbCr 4:4:4 color space */
        HDMI_CS_YCBCR422/**< YCbCr 4:2:2 color space */
    };
    /**
     * @enum ColorDepth
     * @brief Color depth per pixel of video stream
     */
    enum ColorDepth {
        HDMI_CD_36,/**< 36 bit color depth per pixel */
        HDMI_CD_30,/**< 30 bit color depth per pixel */
        HDMI_CD_24/**< 24 bit color depth per pixel */
    };

    I don't have an external recorder but doesn't the NX1 currently only offer 4:2:2 8 bit out?

    Let's put a "1" in front of those numbers and give it a shot!  180 Mbps should do the trick.

    I contacted Samsung regarding the release of a developer tool for the NX1, however Samsung US said no such tool was available for them to release. I have no Korean knowledge so if someone would be kind enough to try contact Samsung Korea because they definitely sit on the tools for the camera, they already pulled it out of Europe, America and Australia.
    As for the Source code, its at least something to begin with, we have more than what Magic Lantern started with so I am not sure we are in a position to complain but developer tools would be welcomed if someone had them, as far as I can understand its quite possible to unlock features through the Tizen OS however implementation to hardware level has to be done differently as its a seprated code apparently so if we wanted lets say CinemaDNG we would have to go into hardware level code in order to implement it but it should be possible to remove the 29 minute record limit through Tizen OS.
    I might be wrong though but its how I understood it from reading countless of forums regarding the hacking of NX1, none has ever come to fruit this one has to be the most active one I ever seen.

    Its come to my attention that no one has posted the Open Source code to the NX1, its a 1.3GB sized .zip file its simply just called NX1.zip, maybe there is something in there to help you guys?

    Undecided, a SDK exists to create apps for pc to tether the nx1. You could still request it, I guess. But from there you won't likely be able to change inner parameters, like bitrate, fps, resolution and so on.

    But some ppl found some 'backdoors' for uploading scripts and programs to nx. And a guy, who totally disappeared, was able to get rid of recording time limit on nx300, by directly modifying the fw somehow.

    Guys, I am developer but being a developer is different than being a hacker. A developer works with tools that give them the functionality they need. A hacker may have to invent tools for platforms where such tools are not readily available. If we had a publically available SDK and a method to sign and upload the firmware onto the NX1 I am sure I could make changes to it.

    nx1 is different from all the cameras that have been hacked till now.

    it is based on linux tizen, a real os, with the possibility of running apps and programs.

    I feel like beeing moderator right now :D.

    Seems that now we have accomplished two following baby steps:
    a) we are in agreement that contacting hackers who are doing it as we speak on other cameras is in order
    b) as soon as we get reasonable information from them what to expect, we should start fundraiser so everybody can easily pitch in and we have funds for hackers

    Is original poster still here (OP for next time)? Also is who is actively watching this topic, like multiple times a day - please come forward guys.
    - It would be useful if OP would create first post dedicated to changes for easier overview of things happening
    - You mentioned some names of hacker. Can somebody resourceful make a list of hackers from ML, GH2 and basicaly active or potential hackers to contact?

    Shit, that IS doable. Let's start contacting everyone we can and get the lay of the land, so if someone IS interested, we can get fundraising going ASAP.

    I think this sums up the situation pretty well.

    I agree that contacting the Magic Lantern people might be the best bet.
    Really there were only ever TWO hacked Camera OS's - Canon by Magic Lantern and GH2 by Vitaliy.
    Casey's suggestion of enticing other hackers into it with a bounty might be the other viable option.

    I've never contacted the Magic Lantern people - but I know they ARE contactable. But it ain't gonna come cheap because those are pro's that have already done their time in hacking and have moved on in their lives.
    Maybe we could pitch in our money and offer them a private concert by CHARO. That should hook anybody, right?

    I was wondering that, perhaps, the best way to 'hack' nx1 would be writing code for it. I mean, instead modifying the existing fw, why not just leave it as is and write new routines to be summoned from sd at startup? That should be possible as shown by those who have done something for this camera, till now. And these routines should 'intercept' some parameters and change them on the run. Eg. When I select video pro quality, set a higher bitrate. Or: when I set 120fps, run at 240fps and so forth...

    +1 - by the way, Samsung's support of hacking was that they released an SDK for camera control - nothing deeper than that. So someone could potentially develop more remote control apps or keep them coming when Samsung abandons theirs.
    I wonder - rumor mill was that Samsung NX engineers have been transferred to various divisions. Would be cool if someone had an in with Samsung (journalist or filmmaker, I dunno) and a funded project could actually fine a software engineer who worked on the NX firmware, and hire them as an engineer or advisor. Seems like that would be a more direct path to a useful product. It's a giant company though, but hey, place an ad in a Korean trade publication??
    Other than that, see if anyone at ML has dug into the camera - someone experienced may have some insights into the structure of the code and how difficult it could be.

    I am definitely in support of this. Including a donation, the man that hacked the NX300, he is doing some interesting things and may be our guy if we want to throw money at him:

    If we can get 240 fps at a bitrate of 200... holy shit....
    HDMI can output 480, 576, 720 and 1080 (no 2160) but there appears to be support for up to 240fps (at least as a value in a table).
    Also, file names nx_cs.adj is definitely searched for on SD card (also alt.adj, nx_dev.adj, paf_adj_restore.adj, etc). Also, iperf is used for testing Wifi
    Regarding sensor modes (for video): FHD, Cinema, Video60, Video120, Video240, VideoHFull, VideoFull, ModeQHD, UD, UD_Crop1, UD_Crop2, 720P60
    If UD is UHD there are at least three different crops, tecno will love this
    There seem to be 7 movie modes 0 - 6 (0:UHD/1:UHD_D/2:FHD/3:CINEMA/4:HD/5:VGA/6:QVGA) - can someone check if they are all present in menus? (**two** UHD + CINEMA - it that 4k?)
    Frame rates go from 4fps to 240fps in many increments. Pixels can be read in 10, 12 and 14 bits.
    There are a bunch of functions that (it looks like that to me) call directly HW functions of DRIMe5,
    all prefixed with d5_ like d5_ep_3dlut_op_init (oh, yeah, there is code for loading custom LUTs), d5_ep_top_change_jpeg_moa_for_conti_cap, d5_ipc_set_dram_addr, etc.

    The compact body could be the cause of this crop factor. Processing power needed for full sensor readout may need a larger space for cooling, and that's probably why NX1 is much larger but is able to do full sensor readout, while the NX500 is not.
    If 25p is also full sensor it will be fine for EU users, but 30p with crop is not forgivable. It seems they are planning for a A7100 or something with full sensor readout.

    Have you used a camera with a touchscreen. Until I used one, I didn't realise the ease and necessity of having one, either. Almost like a Laptop with touchscreen. It's a completely different experience. And on cameras the focus point is So Much more precise. And much faster.

    So to recap on the all important crops...
    24p = no crop Super 35mm 4K (1.5x crop vs full frame)
    30p = 2.3x crop 4K
    120p = 2.3x crop 1080p
    Looks like the Samsung NX1 has an ace card here.
    But I am sure the A6300 will have the dynamic range advantage... and proper LOG profile.

    My faith is restored in Slog on the A7SII, so it's great the A6300 has this function too and isn't crippled.
    This sounds like a very cool camera to compliment the higher end models.
    I've attached a location shot I did in Whitby, UK at the Abbey.
    Shot on A7SII, Slog2 (modified profile), Sigma 18-35mm (at 35mm).
